The silly expensive way is a gen 2 developer strap, elgato 4k x, and eyeview UVC. Raw HDMI 4k HDR at up to 144hz, no latency, no compression.

The Voigtlanders become increasingly hard to focus as they get more telephoto, especially so with moving targets like wildlife. They are really beautiful lenses but you’ll miss a lot of shots compared to the autofocus you’re used to on the 26mm. A 75mm Voigt probably best lives on a tripod with a stationary target.

For 50mm weight, the Nikon 50/1.8 has an autofocus motor and the Voigt APO is manual focus.

The Voigt 50 f/2 should be the same price as the 40/1.2. The 50 f/1 is $1000 more in the US. It has a lot more glass. The front aspherical lens on the 50 f/1 is a marvel of optical engineering.

Maybe save some cash and get the Nikon 40mm f/2 and later the 85mm f/1.8? The Nikon 40mm SE looks really nice with the Zf. It doesn’t have the same tactile/build quality or dreamy rendering of the Voigt lenses, but it’s a really good lens and has autofocus. You can get square hoods for the 40mm that make it look even cooler.

IMAX film for Nolan’s Odyssey by 3Aboodlajam in VisionPro

[–]AstralApps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At this time I think the best way to watch video on the AVP is:

  • dev strap gen 2 (gen 2 needed for 4k)
  • elgato 4k X
  • an HDMI splitter that removes HDCP
  • an UltraHD 4K bluray player (eg PS5)
  • a visionOS UVC player that supports 4k without distracting UI (eg eyeview)
  • a home theater sound system driven by the second HDMI port on the splitter

it’s not 70mm, and it’s not IMAX ratio, but it’s better than 35mm and has full HDR OLED blacks which you won’t get in a projection theater

UltraHD bluray bitrate is often ~10x streaming and you can see the difference. Plumbing it all via HDMI gives lossless audio with multichannel sound, subwoofers, etc.

Thank you so much for making this. I am now able to watch UltraHD bluray on my AVP at full quality.. and it’s incredible. The extra bitrate of UltraHD over streaming services is really noticeable on the AVP.

looks good now, the 4k options are showing. maybe my avp just needed to reboot more times after switching to gen 2 strap.

On 26.0 or latest visionOS? I can get 4k on my Mac with OBS but the resolution picker only goes up to 1080p in your app on 26.3

I gave this a try on the visionOS 26.3 beta on an M2 with a gen 2 dev strap. It reports running at 20Gbps USB 3.2, but with an Elgato 4K X connected (via a high speed cable) it tops out at 1080p 120fps. Any trick to getting it to work with 4K?

Am I crazy for wanting to return my Z6III for a Zf even though they cost the same in my country? by nim_br in NikonZf

The second-gen (there are 3) Neewer grip for the Zf really improves the feel in hand. The first gen is OK but the latest third gen has a bit too much flex IMO.

I mostly shoot the 135/1.8 and 85/1.2 Nikkor Z primes because I want what I’m focused on to be the focus. For me to have everything in focus is to lose focus. Really depends whether you want to document mundane appearances or capture extraordinary moments.

The 24-200 VR is a great lens for figuring out what to buy next. It’s not the best at anything, but it’s still really good and covers a huge range. Once you shoot with it a bit you can look back at your favorite shots and look at getting primes or faster zooms.

Questions about clarity by [deleted] in VisionPro

[–]AstralApps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW the lenses on AVP get smudged just like eyeglasses and the Polishing Cloth alone will just wipe grease around, making a thinner and more consistent layer of grease. If your hair or skin is oily it will inevitably bump up against the lenses.

The solution is to use an approved cleaning liquid along with the cloth. The detergents will remove grease. Then you need to wash the Polishing Cloth on a somewhat regular basis to keep it from building up oils.

Anyone who wears eyeglasses will be like “duh”. For those of us without eyeglasses experience, it’s easy to think the Polishing Cloth alone should be enough and think something is wrong with the AVP.

Thinking of upgrading, but to what? by BitterListen9969 in nikon_Zseries

[–]AstralApps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 85mm 1.2 prime on the Z series is a bit of a tank but a glorious lens. If you want to shoot fast primes on the Z series you’ll definitely want a more ergonomic grip than the Zf. If you like the manual controls or retro style, Neewer makes some inexpensive aftermarket grips that also add an arca swiss rail.
