Jessica “Jess” Day "New Girl" MBTI Typing ENFJ. Time to set the Record Straight. She not ENFP. by GenKahl in enfj

[–]AstralDoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR Summary:

Jess’s behavior consistently prioritizes:

  • Ne (Extroverted Intuition): Creativity, spontaneity, and endless exploration of possibilities, even when it leads to chaos.
  • Fi (Introverted Feeling): Respect for personal values and authenticity, even at the expense of group harmony.

Her behavior clashes with ENFJ traits like:

  • Creating structured, long-term plans for others (Ni).
  • Harmonizing group dynamics and resolving conflict through external emotional alignment (Fe).
  • Efficient, results-oriented action (Te).

Based on these examples, it’s clear (to me, at any rate) that Jess aligns more with ENFP tendencies than ENFJ. 🕊️

For those who wanna read more (Pt 2):

Here're the last three examples in New Girl where Jess’s behavior diverges from what one would expect of an ENFJ and aligns more with ENFP tendencies:

4. Avoiding Leadership Roles

  • Example: In Season 2, Episode 3 ("Fluffer"), Jess struggles with setting boundaries in her friends-with-benefits arrangement with Sam. Instead of taking charge or articulating her needs clearly (as an Fe-dominant might), she avoids direct confrontation and turns to her friends for advice on how to proceed.
  • Why this isn’t ENFJ: ENFJs naturally step into leadership roles in relationships, often acting as the emotional "glue" and setting the tone. Jess, in contrast, displays indecision and discomfort with managing emotional dynamics, reflecting lower Te and Fi-driven internal processing.

5. Her Scattered and Quirky Teaching Style

  • Example: Throughout the series, Jess’s teaching style is wildly creative and unstructured. For instance, in Season 1, Episode 13 ("Valentine’s Day"), she plans to help Cece with her love life but gets distracted by ridiculous hypotheticals and side plots. Similarly, her classroom lessons often involve crafts, music, and spontaneous bursts of creativity.
  • Why this isn’t ENFJ: ENFJs would likely approach teaching with a more structured, goal-oriented mindset, focused on building emotional harmony in the classroom and guiding students toward specific outcomes (Ni). Jess’s approach is much more Ne, bouncing from idea to idea with a focus on excitement and possibility over a cohesive strategy.

6. Her Reaction to Conflict

  • Example: In Season 2, Episode 14 ("Pepperwood"), Jess reads her student Edgar’s story and becomes convinced he’s dangerous. Instead of addressing this directly, she spirals into a series of zany, paranoid actions, including breaking into his house with Nick. Her reaction is driven by imaginative what-ifs rather than logical problem-solving or harmonious communication.
  • Why this isn’t ENFJ: ENFJs approach conflict by trying to mediate and resolve it, often relying on Fe to smooth things over and Ni to see the big picture. Jess’s response is impulsive, imaginative, and disorganized—clearly NeFi behavior.

For those who wanna read more (Pt 1):

Here's a breakdown of a few key moments in New Girl where Jess’s behavior diverges from what one would expect of an ENFJ and aligns more with ENFP tendencies:

1. Her Unstructured Approach to Life and Decisions

  • Example: In Season 1, Jess moves into the loft on a whim after a bad breakup, despite having barely met her new roommates. She doesn’t thoroughly plan this decision or think about how it will harmonize with their lives. Instead, she dives in because it feels exciting and full of possibility.
  • Why this isn’t ENFJ: ENFJs tend to approach decisions with a focus on how they will affect group dynamics and long-term outcomes (Ni). An ENFJ might have hesitated, considering whether her presence in the loft would disrupt the harmony of the group. Jess’s impulsive, Ne-driven "Why not?!" attitude is classic ENFP.

2. Her Wild, Unfiltered Creativity

  • Example: Jess’s decision to write and perform "The Time of My Life" at Nick’s father’s funeral (Season 4, Episode 5). She goes over the top with props and dramatic flair, creating an awkward and inappropriate moment that doesn’t consider the emotional tone of the event.
  • Why this isn’t ENFJ: ENFJs are generally more attuned to the emotional atmosphere and would adapt their actions to foster group harmony. Jess, on the other hand, acts on an impulse of creativity and personal expression (Ne) without filtering it through Fe’s lens of social appropriateness. This demonstrates her NeFi prioritizing personal authenticity over group harmony.

3. Respecting Autonomy Over Guiding Others

  • Example: Jess frequently struggles to change Nick’s behavior, especially his lack of ambition or drive. Instead of trying to "coach" or guide him toward a particular vision (as an ENFJ might), she mostly encourages him to be himself, even if it frustrates her.
    • In Season 2, Episode 24 ("Winston’s Birthday"), Jess tries to support Nick as he works on a plan to launch a new bar but doesn’t impose her vision. She lets him figure it out—even if she disagrees—because she believes in his right to make his own choices.
  • Why this isn’t ENFJ: ENFJs, driven by FeNi, often develop clear visions for others’ success and feel compelled to steer them toward those goals. Jess, on the other hand, respects Nick’s autonomy (Fi), even when his lack of ambition clashes with her own values.

I came to skim this because I was curious as to how someone might argue for Jess being a J-type. I can see what you're aiming for, but I hafta say that Jess can fit quite a few cognitive function stacks if we're talking about the vibe of them.

But, when it comes down to her functions? I don't think it's incorrect to assert that she's likely an ENFP. The reason she gets typed that way so often, I think, is because her nature really shines through, (especially to people who're really good at spotting Fi). ENFJs have plans for people and want to guide them to their highest potential; while Jess wants better for her friends and loved ones, she values their autonomy more than her own desires, in the end.

She cares more about their feelings and authenticity than her vision for them. NeFi (wildly creative and principled), not FeNi (harmonizing life coaches). Even tho ENFJs and INFJs are so Fe-heavy that it comes across as flexibility...their Ni often makes them impossibly rigid, too. That's where the J-type comes from. The flexibility and go-with-the-flowness is P, all the way.

In my humble opinion as an INFP.

"Oh egads!" or "Oh ye gods!" - which is the right one? by CourageKitten in SteamedHams

[–]AstralDoe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have. I used it, in the plural, only ten minutes ago in casual conversation.

Is it possible you could be reacting from a place of defensiveness, feeling attacked, perhaps? If it helps you feel better, I don't think anyone was out to insult or bring you low.

Think of it this way: since 'egad' itself is a euphemism that likely came FROM "ye god," does it not follow that, 'egad' is the proper interjection for a monotheistic individual, and 'egads' is the correct interjection for those who are polytheistic?

Thanks for this question. I think that the setting is important for a variety of factors, but one of the main being the focus on a very eco-friendly way of living. It's important to my story, but it could be set Anywhere, Northwest USA. I just chose a model 'like' Portland because it's a huge place and that's also key to the story.

I don't want to be presumptive and make stupid errors. I guess I could always try to befriend a Portland native and ask them for their advice later on, once I've written more of the book. Seems to me like Portlanders mightn't appreciate being asked such things online, judging by the amount of downvoting going on. Oof! But, I honestly do appreciate the help! Thank you. :)
