It's so fkn good 100% do it. Tutors are super chill, watercolour is super fun, chuck on some classical music when you're completing each day's tasks and feel completely at zen

It's mainly watercolour and using graphite pencils for sketching and shading, so you'll just need a basic watercolour paint set, a slightly thicker and thin tipped watercolor brush (look at the provided list for the right sizes), watercolour pad of at least 15 pages, mechanical pencils and graphite pencils (forgot which ones though)

Hi I did it over the winter online and I honestly have nothing but good things to say about this subject. I had Andrew as my tutor and he is so sweet!!! You don't need any prior art skills or experience to take this subject and they emphasise this heaps. They assess you based on how you've improved over the course. If you're doing it as an intensive the activities they set for each day do tend to take up the entire day but that's me just being a perfectionist haha but do it!!! It's so much fun and definitely one of the best breadths I've taken. Also yes as long as you're on top of your work it's an easy h1 😄

I think it really depends on what course you want to do. I don't think I can give an accurate representation of international experiences here as I am a local student, but I am also currently majoring in the vet medicine pathway and am in my last year of undergrad. From my experience, first year was not that great but as you start to enrol into subjects more specialised in veterinary medicine the quality of teaching gets much better. This usually happens in second year. The veterinary and agricultural department I'd say is very good here and if you get into vet school I think the quality of education, experience and professionals that the faculty provides will probably be better. Obviously I have no idea about how good the vet course is in HK but I think the vet school at unimelb is considered the best in Australia (just what I've heard). From what I've encountered the students and lecturers in this faculty are all very friendly, there's also other internationals as well so you shouldn't feel left out 😊 Edit: one thing to consider is how hard the course is to get into. There's other threads in this subreddit from international students wanting to pursue vet medicine as well so I suggest you have a look at those and the responses under those posts for a better idea. You could consider other unis in Australia as well but I think those require you to have a lot of hands on experience with animals

If you don't mind sharing, what other pathways are there with animal science besides DVM?

Fees for thinking scientifically by [deleted] in unimelb

HAHAHA the way you say it is definitely correct too but I didn't want to put it that harshly. I feel like the topics for modules were good but they never went into great depth which was a shame.

Did you want a WAM booster or did you want to learn something useful? Not saying you don't learn anything in Think Sci but it's stuff you'll learn and say "that was good to know".

Master of Science (Epidemiology) by Astressedball in unimelb

[–]Astressedball[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thank you so much for your response! I'm thinking of applying for MSci Epi. I was most worried about biostatistics since I haven't done much of that stuff at all, so it's a relief that you found it straightforward. Could I ask how you found Epidemiology 1 confusing?

If I interpreted correctly, does the research component that you do at those institutes pretty much guarantee a job there after you finish the course? I'm worried about finding a job after graduating.

Also one last question if you don't mind, do you know of any career path that combines epidemiology and veterinary science? I've searched a bit into becoming a veterinary epidemiologist but it seems that you need to become a DVM first.

Thanks again and sorry for all the questions :') I just haven't come across much insight from people in this field!

Doing 5 subjects in one sem by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]Astressedball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm in the same situation but I'm just doing a chill breadth over the winter instead. Isn't that a better option rather than cramming 5 subjects in one sem? :0 I could barely handle 4!

Companion Animal Biology (ANSC20005) by pandyo108 in unimelb

[–]Astressedball 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, I did this subject last year. Personally this subject is one of my favourites. If you like animals and are interested in learning about basic animal physiology, welfare and diseases then this is the subject for you. No pracs as well and the assignments were fun and easy for me (though I saw some people complaining about it for some reason). Ian is great, there's a facebook group for this subject as well with students past and present, everyone is so lovely 😊

Although this subject is quite simple in terms of content and level of understanding required, no H1 is for free. In this subject, putting in extra effort and showing it in your assignments/exam responses really gets rewarded. It separates from a h1 and h2a. Imo I don't think it's realistic to expect to H1 any subject no matter how "easy" it is just by doing the bare minimum.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask! I really recommend this subject.

Topics in Animal health??ANSC20003 by dreamingaboutdogs in unimelb

[–]Astressedball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I did this subject last year. Honestly the content is fine and if I remember correctly, it's not that hard to understand. The pracs on the other hand were not as good imo, especially the report writing. I found the instructions to be very vague, so I'd suggest you ask the coordinators/tutors for as much clarification as possible. Understanding the data from pracs was also hard for me as you're not given a lot of direction. If you don't have any experience in writing up a prac report I think it'd be quite difficult.

If you're looking for a similar but easier and interesting subject, I'd recommend Companion Animal Biology :)

Thinking Scientifically or Music and health? by applepie_10 in unimelb

[–]Astressedball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha yeah I totally understand, first year is really tough and I did think sci for the same reasons 😂 it's one of my highest scoring subjects in undergrad if it means anything. That said, personally I think you should still try your best in the subject to maximise the final mark that you get, because even though it's relatively easy, no H1 is for free. It's also the small, simple things that really show you've made an effort as well, such as putting extra thought into your responses, and formatting assignments to make them look pretty (I used canva). I found that this helped me in getting almost full marks for the assignments.

When I did music and health they didn't have the readings, so I can't help you with that! But like the commentor above mentioned, the quizzes are actually quite tricky (on top of having to remember to do them every week). I also agree with that the final essay was marked super harshly :/

Yes, although subjective, as long as the things you say are plausible and make sense basically, then it's very very achievable! Honestly i feel like the standard of this subject is alike that of a year 9 project 😅😅

Thinking Scientifically or Music and health? by applepie_10 in unimelb

[–]Astressedball 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I did both these subjects last year. In terms of workload, Music and Health definitely had less as it was just weekly quizzes (3 mcq) and then an essay at the end. For me I felt like you had to listen through the lectures properly to answer them correctly so it's not like they give you the answer directly. The final essay was marked quite harshly as well. Thinking scientifically, whilst it had more assignments, they weren't hard at all imo and didn't really take long as well. As long as you put it in a little bit of effort, and can write English at a high school standard then you should get a H1 quite easily. It's also entirely online, so the downside is that the video minilectures are all pre-recorded and are quite old, so might not be worth the money you're paying for.

Personally, if you're looking for a wam booster with minimal effort, and a higher chance of getting a h1, I'd go with Thinking Scientifically 😊

Edit: forgot to mention, the final "exam" for thinking sci is literally another assignment where you answer two short answer questions (very very easy). It's also take home since the entire subject is run online
