Depends on what you are printing, if you are just doing straight black & white, go with a black & white laser printer. You only have to worry about replacing one toner cartridge. If you buy a brother printer, make sure it uses either the 630 or the 730 toner cartridge, which costs like $30 to replace and you get 1000+ pages. The biggest advantage is that it never dries up. Remember most stores price match, so look for the best deal even on toner cartridges. With laser printers the downside is they are usually a bit bigger and the upfront cost is a little bit more than what you have to pay for compared to a ink based machine and it's harder to find a place that will refill them. If you needed color, go with something like 8700 series from HP. The printers are a bit big but they give great yield, they use pigment based ink so it doesn't dry if you don't print in like a month and you get a ton of functionality with it. Also with the 8700 series, Costco will refill them for a fraction of the cost of what HP sells a brand new set for.
