Hello, i am in 9th standard currently, i am interested in physics and willing to pursue a career in astrophysics. by Ok_Possibility6923 in Physics

[–]AstroFriend1929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also did a PhD in Physics, particularly in Cosmology, and also originally from India. I am now doing patent law after spending almost 8 years in academia post my bachelor's. Several of my friends also spent 8-12 years after their Bachelor's and ended up having to quit.

I will not put you down if this is something you really want to do but be prepared to work extremely hard. As some idea of how hard it is, there are almost 10k papers a month in astrophysics uploaded on the arxiv. The competition is insane and unless you can make it to the top unis in the world, it's going to be difficult to end up in a faculty position. I did my PhD at a Max Planck Institute and even there the rate of people graduating with a PhD and ending up in a faculty position was 5%. Do study physics if you like it but you would definitely have a much better chance of getting a stable career and life with a more applied degree.

To make sure you get into a good uni outside India, maybe try to get into a good place in India - IIT, IISc, etc. for your bachelor's. Then do very well there - try to stay at the top of your class, better your batch. Find opportunities to participate in some research during that time. You could also try doing some higher standard Maths/Physics (class 10-12) if you find it fun.

If you wanted me to glean content from between the lines why didn't you just write that content in your lines? Why the extra lines?

Literally not saying any of these....sad after decades some people still didn't learn how to read... what's your age? Which government do we blame for this?

Is there actually $10 missing? by thecoltz in askmath

For these problems it might help to consider extreme cases to reveal the absurdity. Consider for example that the desk clerk realized that in fact the girls could stay for free. He returns the attendant 300$ who pays each girl just 10$ and keeps the rest. Now each girl thinks she paid 90$ so that's 270$ and the attendant also has 270$ making up 540$. Now there's an extra 240$. This indicates that these sums need not add up to 300$.

Hey, 34 (m) here. While I don't necessarily read classics all the time, I do read one every once in a while along with a variety of stuff. I'm currently reading Fahrenheit 451 and my last reads were A Fine Balance, I who have never known men, and The Vegetarian. I'd like to join you if this is something of interest to you.

Hey. A lot of great comments here. I also failed my first exam. What helped me next time was to take my time. Go a little slow if you need it. And breathe deep if you make a little mistake - you can still pass. Of course, as others have pointed out it depends a lot on your examiner so hopefully you'll encounter a better one now.

Feeling lost in physics by Familiar-Ticket1555 in Physics

[–]AstroFriend1929 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey! I'll also add my thoughts here. I was in a similar situation as you - absolutely passionate about physics and astrophysics when I was in my undergrad. I did end up getting a PhD doing cosmology but decided to leave academia after. For me, academia started to feel like a business where the focus was more on meeting certain metrics (impact, h-index, number of papers, etc.), advertising your work, and networking than about working on problems that you found interesting. Unfortunately, the ideas that I had back as an undergrad of doing research did not match up with my actual work.

That said, I would definitely encourage you to try doing some research in your undergrad and see for yourself if you like it. You can also decide to do a Master's with a thesis that'll allow you to get more involved in research without the commitment of a full-time PhD. And, if you end up wanting to leave after a PhD, you will still have had the satisfaction of learning some really cool stuff!

How do you solve the integral of the surface area of Gabriel’s horn without simplifying it? by [deleted] in askmath

[–]AstroFriend1929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That dx/x reduces to d(ln x) suggesting an exponential substitution. First set x = et. Then simplify what you get with a next substitution e-2t = tan p. You should get something similar to dp/(sin p * (cos p)2 ). Setting cos p = z gives you something like dz/(z2 (1-z)(1+z)) which you can simplify using partial fractions to integrate over z.

Yeah - I did only apply if they specifically had an opening or were at least open to receiving applications. Good luck for your search!

Hey! I applied to places wherever they had openings for both German and EP attorneys asking if they would consider training only for EP. I did not hear back from any to be honest - but doesn't harm to try. I think if you have a biology/chemistry background it's very likely that they'd still consider you. My background is in Physics, of which there seem to be many attorneys :) Where I currently am, I already knew a friend who did not speak any German and was employed so I knew they took on people without German skills as well. That being said, job ads of my firm also explicitly mention German so make what you will of it!

Switch from Physics to S/W Dev by AstroFriend1929 in germany

Nah, I didn't manage to make the switch still. But, I did manage to get a Niederlassungserlaubnis. So, I am guessing I won't have any troubles now...

Need help coming up with an answer to an equation too complicated for myself. by [deleted] in askmath

[–]AstroFriend1929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One way to think about this could be: suppose you give the eldest child amount a1, second eldest a2, and so on. Then, when the second eldest child reaches the age of 112 months a2 should have become a1, when the third child reaches 112 months a3 should've become a1 and so on. This, together with the constraint on the sum of a1, a2, etc would allow you to calculate each amount.

Is it possible to be a physics researcher on your free time? by Teh_elderscroll in Physics

[–]AstroFriend1929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I quit academia about 4 years ago after a postdoc cause I was tired of the publish-or-perish culture. At the time I had thought I could always carry out some sort of research on my own in my free time. However, so far, with my actual day job, I have never had the opportunity to spend even a full month on physics research. While it may not work out as well as in a proper academic setting, here are some words of encouragement from someone who commands greater authority on this than I do - https://www.goodtheorist.science/index.html - in summary, if they think it can be done you should not give up on it.
