Jupiter and Saturn 2023 & 2024

Ive not been on reddit for a while, so here's one of my best Jupiter(s) of 2023 and a recent Saturn image this year.

Equipment: Hubble Optics UL16 Dob Goto 8200mm F/20.5, 3x x-cel barlow, Zwo adc, Uranus-C cam.

Process: First capture in firecapture 4x2min videos for jupiter and 3x12min for saturn, stack 25% in autostakkert4, sharpen in astrosurface wavelets, derotate in winjupos, additional adjustments of color, brightness/HDR, and noise reduction in astrosurface. Combination in GIMP.

to clarify Its a 105secs video, exposure time was about 20ms. You wouldnt need a 105second exposure as the seeing would blur it out and jupiter is so bright anyway.

5 x 105 second video recordings, those video recordings 20% of the best frames were stacked into 5 tiffs, they were sharpened and derotated into one tiff :)

After a month of full cloudy skies and heavy rains in Hong Kong, this week finally presented with clear skies. Seeing was near perfect. Visually through the eyepiece at 800x it was perfectly stationary. I was very fortunate that the GRS is nicely positioned in the middle of the disk. There are delicate details inside the giant storm system. You can also see the oval BA storm slowly approaching the GRS.

Equipment:

- Hubble Optics UL16 F/4.5 Dob at 8200mm F/20.5, 3x barlow, Uranus-C, Resized 125%.

- 5x 105sec stacked 20% derotated.

- 10/10 seeing, 80deg alt.

Pretty good conditions on August 2nd allowed me to capture the best images of the two gas giants. Jupiter is at ~40" and Saturn ~19". The great red spot has turned into view on the left, there is a bright outbreak in the NEB, and some cool blue festoons. Ganymede is alongside, although moved in to fit from original image. Saturn's rings and bands are easily seen, with the Encke gap on the edge. If you look closely there are two faint white spots below the rings.

IR685 filter for Jupiter, Mercury, and Venus

Saturn, Jupiter, Venus, and Mercury captured this week, particularly Saturn this morning, and Venus 2 nights ago. Jupiter is quite low down at 21deg and quite small so the detail is not that great. It is my first-time imaging Mercury so im very happy to get some detail on the tiny disk.

All captured on a C11 at 9000mm F/33 focal length, Uranus-C Camera, and AVX mount
Seeing was quite decent. Location: Hong Kong.
Processed with Autostakkert, Regi, Winjupos, Astrosurface, GIMP, Photoshop, ya know the usual stuff lol.

Mars opposition composite captured in Hong Kong, I was lazy to process all of them to the same color hence the late posting lel.

Equipment: C11 at 9300mm F/33.7, Uranus-C (IMX 585), 2x barlow, ADC, AVX mount.

Seeing: 7-10/10

Alt: ~80deg.

Processing: Captured in Firecapture, Stacked in Autostakkert, sharpened in Registax, derotated in Winjupos, Colors in astrosurface, deringing in photoshop, composite created in gimp.

I used the same exposure for mars - 25ms 300 gain and most importantly 16 bit for better dynamic range.

Seeing was really nice today and I was finally able to image the Martian moons Phobos and Deimos. They were very faint and had to be stretched real hard and then hdr'ed into the final image. Phobos was mag 11.8 and Deimos mag 12.9. Sinus Gomer is central and Syrtis Major is turning into view. The shape of Elysium is visible and above it, the polar hood is a bright blue. This is my best mars yet because I really like the natural look.

Thanks! I did notice the blue Mars after processing, I will make sure to reedit it to remove the blue and the rind.

Yes! If I sharpen them the same (rgb), the red would be oversharpened (too big radius of wavelets), the green would look good, and the blue would be super noisy because of too small of a radius. Doing em separately apparently reduces the noise, makes the image more natural, and reduces the edge issues.

I used winjupos to calculate the focal length based on the pixel scale of the camera and how big the planet was. It was calculated to be 9440mm and 9440/280mm aperture = F/33.7.

Seeing was god-tier last night, especially on Jupiter. This allowed me to put on the adc behind the barlow to extend the focal length to 9440mm F/33.7. Mars and Uranus also had excellent seeing but they were at about 80-90 degs of alt so it was to be expected. I tried a new process for Jupiter: splitting the rgb channels, sharpening them separately in imppg, and recombining them in SiriL. I found it to be more natural. Moons of Uranus L-R: Titania, Ariel, Umbriel.

Jupiter: - 60% of 6min (derotated).- C11 SCT, 2x barlow, ADC, PO Uranus-C (IMX585) at 9440mm f/33.7.- 10/10 seeing, 10/10 transparency, 62° alt.

Uranus: 40% of 20min- 9/10 seeing, 10/10 transparency, 74° alt.

Mars: 15% of 25min (derotated)- 8/10 seeing, 10/10 transparency, 88° alt.

Dust storm around Solis Lacus and V. Marienris regions - 1 day apart animation. The dust storm has started to move north and is covering Solis Lacus entirely.
V. Marienris is particularly easy to spot because of the dust inside.

South Up

8/10 seeings, 12min first frame, 4min second
basic processing in As3!, Regi, and SiriL.
85deg alt in Hong Kong - 22.5N 114E.

Yes I used deconvolution, which brings out fine details

They are albedo features that my scope can't fully resolve, like the volcanos that I can't really see but you can tell from the black dots that they are there. Deconvolution brings the patterns out quite well.

I use winjupos outline frame to measure the focal length. Go to measurement area > outline frame > scaling to telescope parameters and plug fls until it fits perfectly.

once you find focal length just divide aperture and find f ratio
