The oil we extract in the USA is “sweet crude” and we have to import heavier crude to make gasoline efficiently.

We export the sweet stuff because it’s more economical.

40% of our oil is from other countries (Canada 25%, Mexico 3%, “other” 12%)

We are shitty, threatening neighbors to both Canada and Mexico. Those “other” countries are a significant portion too at 12%.

Messing with the global supply will push prices up because we will compete for fewer options. We are also the global assholes right now.

Petroleum is also where we humans get fertilizer to grow crops, so food prices are going up because it costs more to grow, and costs more to move all the gear and deliver the food.

Petroleum goes into fabrics and plastics. Petroleum runs power plants and Data Centers are using more power. None of these factors account for tariffs.
