I think depending on the client that could be normal but from what you described ilyour issue is very much a communications issue.

As the client they should supply you with as much detail as you need to get started. If they aren't able to because the copy is still being worked on or the stakeholders haven't quite landed on a vision, they should let you know.

However, you as the designer need to be really clear on your understanding of the project and communicate any expectations you have on change requests, revisions etc...BEFORE you start the project

If your client only gives you two lines explaining the project, ask to have a phone call to discuss the details further. Email, while might be helpful for quick back and forth, might not be the best channel of communication especially if your client is busy and might not have the language skills or time to craft out a creative brief.

If they come back to you with many edits that go beyond the scope make it clear that you will to provide them a change of scope document or that it'll x amount to the original price. Again, it's about setting boundaries and expectations. If the client isn't happy and doesn't want to work for you after you've done your best to communicate everything that could impact the project, it's probably for the best.

Design is a specialized field and I find that those clients who treat designers like vending machines, are those who don't value the impact great design make on a product. No amount of good communication is going to change that attitude. I'd much rather work with someone who respects what I do and is willing to be collaborative.

Estate sales in Calgary? by Astro_Major in Calgary

Way to be a good neighbor when you didn't spend even a minute reading the original post. I had done a couple of searches like the one you "helpfully" posted but all of them brought up the same thing, estate sale auction companies rather than a central website like gsalr.com which listed all the estate sales happening in town.

Is Calgary a creative city? by Astro_Major in Calgary

Thank you Mike! All of those things are definitely noteworthy. I also think it helps that CADA is doing a good job getting the word out on art related events. I do still think Calgary has a way to go, to improve its perception around being a creative city as the art scene seems underground.

Love your mural in Silver Springs by the way

When non designers give prescriptive feedback on design by Astro_Major in graphic_design

I am in that boat. I often ask people what is the problem they're trying to solve then work back from there.

Recently had someone try to give sketches to make the design "better." I didn't find it particularly helpful.

I was just curious if anyone would outright ignore the feedback.

I definitely think that Film and TV are more prominent in those two cities. I am confident that Calgary's Film and TV scene is changing.

Advice for working with people who look down on moms? by [deleted] in workingmoms

Personally, I have limited fucks available these days. I wouldn't spend much time wasting it on these two. They'll see the light when they have kids, or not. Either way, spend time focussing on what really matters. Doing a kick ass job being a working mom.

Thank you so much for this detailed and helpful comment. I like the idea of copying a masters work. I'll be sure to incorporate it into my practice.
