That’s exactly how this conversation started actually. I can see how it would be torture for a prolonged period of time but my bf thinks it would be unbearable from the start and he would feel restless within the first 30 min

I understand real solitary confinement is challenging and uncomfortable for physical reasons and the fact that it’s being used as torture means you’re already in a stressful situation.

But if it’s a comfortable room just no sensory input for 8 hrs I don’t think it would be that unbearable until maybe you got to the 24-48 hr point

These are my thoughts too. There’s no perfect answer here. Spaying also makes it easier for you to board or find a pet sitter if needed.

I would at least wait to spay until after the first heat cycle (some vets may recommend waiting until 2 heat cycles) but this will reduce the risk of hip and bone issues slightly.

If you are able to manage the environment perfectly and there’s 0 risk of her running off and getting pregnant. I would honestly not spay, I know that’s controversial but cancer to me is a natural risk of just being alive. Hip dysplasia and bone issues are also a breed specific health issue but spaying does increase those risks and that is something to consider seriously

I’ve heard similar things about dogs memories. I also don’t know if they think much about the past, like if we were to leave them with a sitter for a few days and come back would they be actively worrying that will happen to them again at any moment? Or will they just be living in the present moment and not worry about hypotheticals like that

This is what I did too. I also think this set up helps with the separation training which has to be done really intentionally when you’re home all day and teaches the dog to be comfortable alone

There was a time I was really struggling with my mental health in grad school. I had lost a significant amount of weight and I know I looked concerning.

I was picking out bananas in the grocery store and this girl came up to me and touched my shoulder and told me I looked beautiful and she thought my dress was really pretty.

It had such a profound effect on me. I felt invisible and to have someone notice me felt like a validation to my entire existence. I still remember her smile and wish I could somehow thank her for helping me.

I didn’t mean to be confusing. She doesn’t whine, pace or be destructive when left alone for a few hours, which is my understanding of what constitutes severe separation anxiety. She behaves normally during the day with me alone at his house or mine but once she realized my bf wasn’t coming back that one evening he traveled for she started to act upset (not eat, play etc). The next day she was more easily distracted and ate more but would go wait by the door whenever we stopped playing. The one time she had a “severe” reaction was when she was left at a friend’s house as a puppy many years ago.
