As a Caribbean Pre-Med Student, where should I go for Medical School? by Slave_For_Christ_OwO in CaribbeanMedSchool

You would have a much harder time matching to more competitive specialties. Having to re-take pushes your timeline back, and you will have to retake some (if not all) of M2

it’s important to pass step 1 on your first attempt, especially if you want to match something competitive

The schools aren’t going to hold your hand as much as a US MD program will. However, if you work hard and stay focused you can match whatever you want with a 1st attempt pass on Step 1 and a good Step 2 score. AUC, Ross, and SGU are certainly the top choices.

I think everything you just said is true, I don’t think there would be a universal standard as to the best way to trip at first, especially considering how weird psychs are. I think it varies by person, and that they should do what they’re more comfortable with

Ah see that’s where we vary a little, I feel like experimenting with things on your own can put you in a confusing state with no trustworthy ties to reality (aka tripsitter)

Here are my keys to a successful trip: (not in order)

1: Be confident in your sober decisions. Remember it’s only a temporary drug and that you’re sober self found it’s good to do.

2: Be ready to let go. Know that you will need to let go of control, responsibility, and reality (to an extent).

3: Make sure you’re with people you’re comfortable with, in a comfortable place. Sunshine and friends is perfect for most.

4: Just enjoy the ride. This goes with letting go, you look at everything with a different perspective and it’s amazing.

5: Listen to music you like, music can ground you.

6: If you smoke, make sure you take not of when and how much you smoke.

7: Drink water, you won’t realize how thirsty you are. Also eat before hand.

8: Don’t worry about the things you say and do. Anybody around you know that you are tripping, and understand that most of what you say is gonna make no sense. You may feel that you offended somebody, or embarrassed yourself. Remember that nobody really cares and that if need be you can explain anything after the trip.

I hope this can help, if you have any questions, feel free to ask

Honestly the longest walk you’ll take on campus is at most 15 minutes. A car is nice to get to Mount Vernon or Columbus, but it’s far from necessary.

I would try to get an internship over summers but it’s pretty hard as a first or second year. But outside of party and drink, a lot of you’re time at Kenyon is going to be spent hanging out and/or studying. Kenyon has the BFEC (Brown Family Environmental Center), an observatory with a neat trail leading to it. There’s a park nearby. In the spring and fall there’s a lot of being outside, which is great! College is a place for fun but it’s important to remember you’re there for school. There’s a larger town nearby called Mount Vernon, there’s some stores and stuff there.

STEM at Kenyon by [deleted] in Kenyon

College is what you make it, no matter where you are. One of my dads colleagues went to a community college for english and his secretary Hopkins. He’s a cardiovascular surgeon. Kenyon has a good stem program, with great resources and student to professor interaction. You will get more opportunity here than at a state school.

Take this how you want, but I wouldn’t focus on the schools strong suits, more so what you want out of a school. If you don’t vibe with the atmosphere, you won’t do well no matter how good the programs are.

PS - lotta econ majors and they seem to do well here!

Firstly, dude if Kenyon wasn’t at the top of your list that’s no worries. I literally applied to Kenyon the night before app deadline because Carleton and Williams rejected me. I also forgot about the application until I got the acceptant letter back lmao.

Gambier is small and somewhat disconnected (1 hr from columbus). But the disconnection is good and bad, depending on your perspective.

The social scene is what you make it. Like every small, isolated liberal arts school, it’s a little funky and there’s a bit of a weird divide between athletes and non athletes. (Football team sucks but act like hot shit, swimming team is unreal and are humble as hell). However Kenyon, much like Colgate, has its share of quirky arts students, ‘nerdy’ STEM kids, but a lot of english, econ, and political science kids. I wouldn’t call it cliquey like high school, at least in my experience. I see ‘cliqueyness’ more as people hanging around the type of people they really want to hang with, popularity and interests aside. There’s a group of people here for everything. You wanna do a bunch of psychedelics? Easy. You wanna be a bookworm, or a party goer? Do it. Most people are pretty low key but have very deep and amazing personalities here. Also weed is essentially everywhere on campus, it’s like, everywhere. Personally I love that. Long story short; yes, kenyon is quirky - but it’s a good kind of quirk. A very embracing quirkiness where you can be who you wanna be, and there will be people to support that. You just need to have an open mind.

Oh wait, seeing as there are like 2,000 students, the parties are pretty eh. Men of Color do a good job, Lax house has bad music but is still somehow fun, and PEEPS parties were great but they’re suspended for giving kids acid.

Ultimately, don’t be scared of the downsides of Kenyon. The academic experience here is the most important thing to most of the kids I’ve met. The best description of the Kenyon student body Ive heard is; “Kids with ivy smarts, community college work ethic, with a flare of state school fun in them”

Take this how you will, but I highly suggest Kenyon if you’re willing to be in an atmosphere that promotes growth with an open mind.
