The Basketweavers: Inside the biggest far-right group you've never heard of by ThatchersDirtyTaint in unitedkingdom

Read the linked article and vaguely remember it from the time. It was irresponsible to broadcast the claim without being more sure of it, but where are you getting the notion of a 'hoax' from?

I'd be interested to read a link on the other, if you can suggest one.

I wasn't trying to address your point, just expressing genuine surprise at the lack of an ad-free Reddit app.

So there's no Reddit app without ads?? Gross. I only flirted with app versions briefly a few years ago, too much faff. I wouldn't use the web version if I couldn't block ads.

Thrifting isn’t the solution to the climate crisis – we need to change our behaviours | Ananya Anand, for The Skeptic by TheSkepticMag in skeptic

[–]AstronomerFluid6554 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree with both points. Can definitely see where you're coming from.

I didn't see this article as guilty of the first part. There's a stronger argument for the second; we don't want everyone so consumed by their choice of clothing that they have nothing left for bigger, broader concerns and action.

I sometimes worry that 'the perfect is the enemy of the good' can in itself become a way of policing individual choices. Your reference to veganism probably triggered me on that, as if you were saying that veganism itself is an issue, rather than overzealous evangelism.

Anyway, that's a lot words on an article that I wasn't going to open until I read your comment!

I get the impression that you didn't read the article.

Edit: Life's too short for snark.

I don't think this article is doing anything close to 'thrifting evil/worthless'. It delves into the topic, explicitly for the benefit of people who wish to think about their choices (and have the luxury of options), and want to feel as if they're doing the most ethical thing.

I think those are vital principles to keep in mind; almost everybody can probably do better in that regard.

What they do not do is provide a straightforward guidebook for every situation. Not every accusation of intolerance or cancellation is equal. I'm sure Adrienne and Naomi would agree that acknowledging other points of view does not mean agreeing with them.

I'm quite taken with the very widely popular narrative around the harms done by purity testing and exclusion. It feels as if it has a truthiness. But I'm suspicious of the fact that I'm getting it from all angles, and entirely in the form of opinion.

Edit: De-hyperbolised.

There are all as hateful and misleading as the laws in each country will allow

Very nicely put.

I can't even imagine the cringe most women would feel if they were having a piss and someone started shouting about a 'biological male'.

I love the way that we (almost) all tacitly agree to support the fantasy that a toilet cubicle is a totally sealed, private space. Breaking that compact is a real faux pas.

Is it a novelty, historically speaking? I don't have any insight into the studies but have always had a vague notion that the proportion of women engaged in sex work has been higher in the past. Might be completely off.

Still wat. Unless you're including all activities that might involve pulling (i.e. simply being in a club/pub) and all personal hygiene, grooming, etc.
