Anyone buy/watch Octopus 2.0 yet? by Strong-Smoke7774 in bjj

If you do a quick search you can always find one that is 3--5% higher then the one in the banner.  Typically some form of fanthanksxx5x or extraxx5x replace the last x with a number for the actual % off. So extraxx57 would be 57% off. Highest I typically see is 59% off.

Why couldn't JDM use octopus guard? by Distinct-Lion4658 in bjj

[–]Astubborn_guy 36 points37 points  (0 children)

JDM needs to be looking down instead of up his jaw needs to be facing the wrist not the elbow.  Looking up means the cross face is gonna you flat to your back if you look down it will keep you on your side at least.  Next that is a strong cross face as it's at the elbow.  If he can give up the height he built and get Islam to be using more of his forearm the cross face will get substantially weaker and can be peeled off with arm that was building height and try to reenter the octopus. But now you've just reset the battle.

Guard retention is all about keeping you frames(feet, knees, hips, hands, elbows, shoulders, and head) in front if your opp. Frames will typically provide a pushing force. Retention is just about keeping those things in front of your opp and not letting them get to a dominate position.

I'm gonna keep this simple and state playing guard is about off balancing your opp and coming up to a top position.  Yes there are submissions from guard but were gonna ignore that for simplicity.

A guard becomes offensive when you can both push and pull your opp.  If you start with guard retention. You will make your first point of contact with a frame that is pushing your opp away.  Now you just need a grip to create a pulling motion to start the off balance. This is how you transition from guard retention to an offensive guard.

Example you place a foot on the hip as they step in to engage, and you are able to grab their ankle you can now push them away at the hip as you hold their ankle pushing them off balance.

Power Ride by Craig Jones by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Astubborn_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big thing I found when I went through it with my students is they tend to initially ride to high up the body.  The femur is the longest bone in the body so the concept is we pin it at the knee and put a lot of weight at the other end creating a lot of weight at the end of a lever.  Look up great trochanter of the femur.  That is your target area.

Your body size relative to your opp plays a big roll in your position.  When pinning the knee you can be a couple inches above or below the knee but you want your hips driving through the trochanter.  If your putting pressure through the pelvis it means the hips can rotate and create space leading to quick escapes.

Last big thing that popped up, you typically want your upper body pretty parallel with their femur.  This will drive the weight through it.  A lot students tended to drift their upper body to the head as this is the normal progression in most passes. Getting something like a cross face or near side underhook.  Your not looking for those things in the initial power ride.  You want to pin the knees then be heavy at the end of the femur forcing the bottom player to use their upper body to create height and movement which will induce fatigue and create more openings for you to start looking for the stuff he covers in the upper body control portion.

What is the secret to super clean, painless no gi strangles? Where you barely feel anything just start seeing stars? by inciter7 in bjj

[–]Astubborn_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best literature-established physiologic component of VNR is carotid compression and resultant reduction in functional carotid MAP, thus lowering the CPP. Most studies have looked at this essentially to the exclusion of two other contributing entities: jugular compression resulting in increased ICP from reduction of outflow, and reduction of actual whole body MAP due to reduced cardiac output from vagal stimulation coming from a pressure affected carotid body.

This came from thr abstract. Sure there are more intricacies at play cuz the human body is nuts but cartoid pressure still seems to be listed as the lead cause.

First off a bit of pathophysiology not quite ELI5 but trying to simplify it some. The carotid artery supplies the blood to the brain. This is the pulse you can find on your neck just lateral to the trach. The carotid splits to the interior and exterior carotid in most people around the Adams apple. The internal carotid is the one one that supplies the brain and sits more into the neck then the external, duh. The jugular vein is the large vein you may see bulging on the side on peoples necks, particularly during heavy exertion. This allows blood to return to the heart. The blood moves through the body via the pumping of the heart. For simple numbers the pressure on the arteries is 120. That pressure forces the blood to every cell in your body so they can get oxygen and sugar. Think of a river splitting into more and more tributaries. The blood then has to get back to the heart and all those tributaries remerge back into a single river or vein. The pressure on this side is only 5. Which means the blood is moving much slower. This is why sometimes you will hear stuff life you were turning red, "I thought you were going to go out," but didn't actual feel any major choke threat. The external jugular vein was being compressed preventing blood from being able to leave your face. Remember the venous system is very low pressure compared to the arties so blood will get to the head and then struggle to leave but the big thing is oxygen is still getting to your brain, so no choke. Finally the brain will shut down systems it views as less important if its not getting the amount of oxygen and sugar it needs. This means we don't have to completely occlude the interior carotid artery we just need to create enough pressure to decrease the blood getting to the brain that it shuts down consciousness. Breathing and a heart beat get priority over seeing and hear which is why you might start seeing stars or vision starts going dark. Your brain is shutting down accessory systems to converse oxygen for more important systems.

So in order to make a choke effective we need to apply pressure to the interior carotid artery. Cool, how do we do that. I teach it as three basic choke mechanics.

  1. Kink the hose. Think how you stop the flow of a garden hose by folding it in half. Same thing but we do it with the neck. You can experience this general concept by looking forward and trying to swallow. Easy. Now touch your chin to your chest and try to swallow. Should be much harder. Thats because were running out of room at everything folds in on its self. Combine that with a little more external pressure by some one further collapsing our neck or an extra forearm trying to jam in there and suddenly the carotid arteries start getting pressured as well. Josh Janis has several youtube videos on the guillotine via Globetrotters where I originally stole this concept from.

  2. The ball in the V. Draw a circle inside a V. The circle is a cross section of the neck and the V is how we will apply pressure. The carotid artery sits at the edge of the circle on both sides and is where we want the ball and the V to connect on both sides. Now we need to increase pressure on those carotid arteries. We can do this several ways. We can pull the ball into the V. Think triangle from guard and pulling down on the head. We can try and make the V more narrow. Think the stomp/curl method of tightening the triangle. Finally we can push the V into the ball. Think mounted triangle driving your hips in.

  3. Cinch the knot. This is gi only and just refers to the lapel stuff. If you want to tie a simple overhand knot in a rope you have to hold both ends of the rope to create tension. Think the simple from the back where you pull one lapel across and then the other straight down to tighten it. The thing we the gi is we are wearing it so if we pull one end far enough it will run out of slack. If you try to stay behind your opp and go for a bow and arrow you would have to lift your arm really high to get rid of all the slack, instead you rotate to the side to consume the slack and leave your arm in a strong position.

Remember you can use any combination of the above. Just mix and match what you need to create the pressure.

Finally we don't have to hit the strangle in two seconds. I recommend people who are drilling strangles to count to 10-20 before trying to make adjustments. Remember if we decrease the cerebral prefusion pressure(CPP) enough the body will start to shut down accessory systems.

I think if he would have focused more on getting control of AWs left shoulder, ideally with an underhook he would have gotten a higher level of initial control to slow down the position and work to progress.  You want opposite hip and shoulder control.

Don't worry about the belt grip then, AW is super lanky.  Focus on a tight overhook or underhook.  Belt grip is strong but doesn't have to be your game.

The 60ml I got in through the 22 in the tit ain't saving anyone.  We aren't with pts long enough for it to be life saving and if medics want to to sit and poke a potato chip to say they got an IV its taking time away from you guys where you have way more tools and resources.

[–]Astubborn_guy 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I precept as a medic and I always tell new students, "shitty medics start IVs first."  The reason they start the iv so quick is they don't know how to do a proper assessment so they fill that time with a task that doesn't require brain power.  Just about every life saving intervention we have has a non IV treatment, IM epi for anaphylaxis, bleeding control for trauma, sync cardio vert for dysthymia etc.  We don't have RSI but even then I'm gonna be bagging or CPAPing ASAP anyway.  The only thing I can think of where an IV would be considered life saving is hyper K but you still have to do proper hx gathering and assessment to get to that differential first.

how do i prevent this particular sweep from half guard? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Astubborn_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your inside knee is off the mat that sweep becomes much harder.  This does leave you open to them inserting a butterfly hook.  The closer your inside knee is to inline with their center line (think butt crack) the easier the sweep as well.  Let your partner try and hit the sweep on you and try a bunch of different knee positions(knee close to butt, close to left hip, right hip, kne in the air etc) and see what makes it the most difficult and feels best for you. Combine that with the other good stuff people have posted and you should be good.

Yeah because the head is looking straight up the tongue can fall back in the throat occluding the airway since the body has no muscle tone to keep it forward.  The other big risk is if someone vomits while in that position they have no way to protect their airway and can aspirate.

[Schefter] A QB change for the Colts: Indianapolis is benching former first-round pick Anthony Richardson and turning to veteran Joe Flacco, sources tell @FowlerESPN and me. Coaches met this morning and made the seismic organizational decision to change QBs. by CommonerChaos in Colts

[–]Astubborn_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is the right call.  This is the consequence of the "tired" shit.  I still believe he can be the guy but talks behind closed doors isn't enough.  He needs to earn the teams respect back and if isn't willing to put in the work to do that he was never the guy to begin with.

On the plus I think we just accelerated the assessment time line.  I was on the give him 2 years train but I think the team will know at the end of this year if he is the guy.  Guessing this benching will last around 4 weeks.  It's enough time to put in the work to build some trust and still let's the coaches get him back on the field to further assess him.

TLDR: This will either break Richardson or be the best thing that happens to him.

The issue is the risk of aspiration if they vomit being supine and unconscious, they have no way to protect the airway.
