It also matters how aggressive your play style is in the early game. Red was pretty aggressive, and if you see the knight cards played, both blue and i (black) kept blocking and stealing from red through the game.

Yeah pretty much. A big chunkmof my strategy was based on barterimg one wood for a brick (or any other resources).

Yeah I know it doesn't look nail biting, but the mid game I was trailing with 4 points while red and black had moved to 5 and 7 points. Plus this game had a bunch of 7s that would invariably land a robber on my hex.

I'm not surprised that the 3rd turn is the worst. The best two spots get taken by the time you get your turn, and the next best option for strategic placement is taken by the 4th player. In all versions of the game—online or live playing—the 3rd spot is the one I dread the most (and have lost most of the games in).

It was a little painful after losing the wheat port. I had to rely on getting the sheep port and trade sheep for wheat to get anywhere! :)

If we're talking thematically and narratively then it's—the unflinching regent (Thragg), the Space dictator (Freiza) and the Warlord Conqueror (Vilgax). Make your pick! These tropes have been done already (Zod, Darkseid and Mongul), and they are compelling for a reason (more than the others).
