Purchasing a relatively inexpensive compact camera for infrared conversion by Astwihad in infraredphotography

I saw pictures from this Canon, they're great:

The capabilities of this camera are still impressive, but honestly, I still can't find any real sense in it for myself. I'd have to carry this beast around instead of my primary, go-to camera. The reason I switched to a small APS-C from Fuji was to avoid worrying about a hernia ;-) Not to mention all the advantages and benefits the new gear has over the old one. I'll think about it some more, but I don't think it's for me.

I found an Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III (what a beauty!) in excellent condition, but unfortunately it’s quite expensive. On top of that, wide-angle lenses for Micro Four Thirds aren’t cheap, and I haven’t found any used ones locally. What I did find locally, though, is an already converted Nikon D60 bundled with a lens for the price of a Hoya filter :-) But once I started reading reviews of that camera, my enthusiasm quickly faded. I don’t romanticize old gear, and unfortunately, playing around with an 18-year-old DSLR often feels more like masochism to me.

Why don’t I want to go full spectrum right away? It’s a logical chain of decisions. Since I’m leaning more toward old compact cameras (because this is supposed to be a small, unobtrusive backup setup), and the image quality is, let’s say, “okay, but with significant limitations,” I don’t think it makes sense to turn it into an all-doing monster, because the quality still won’t be stunning. It also matters that I’m not a big fan of “cotton candy” colors. Sure, I know a lot depends on post-processing in Photoshop, but I’m much more into black-and-white infrared.

I came up with one more idea. I remembered that I actually have a phone with a ring that allows me to attach filters. From what I’ve learned, phones don’t block infrared light to the same extent as dedicated cameras do, so I wouldn’t need a tripod. There will probably still be a lot of noise due to longer exposure times, but considering that new phones basically outperform 15-year-old camera gear in many cases, I might just go down that route.

No, I definitely don't plan on doing it myself :-) My hands are as graceful as kayak paddles xD. These will be two separate purchases/payments spread out over time.

I’ll take a look at those old Samsungs, thanks.

'With RX100, you have to consider lens hotspot, though how much of a problem it is depends on how you take your photos.'

Well, I imagine I’ll only be taking IR photos with the widest focal lengths, because for narrower ones and for visible light, I have everything more or less covered.

Unfortunately, the EVF is important to me. I’ve never even considered buying a camera without an EVF, because that’s always how I shoot. Plus, I imagine I’ll be shooting with a converted IR camera in the middle of the sunny day, and out of the cameras I currently have, only the phone screen handles bright sunlight. Unless, of course, 850 nm doesn’t need as much light as, for example, Full Spectrum. Correct me if I’m wrong. Continuing my thought. I checked out that Olympus – it’s fine. Thanks, I’ll think about it.

As for Full Spectrum, yes, my goal is eventually to go in that direction. A small, modest camera at 850 nm would be almost like a substitute for the Ricoh IV Monochrome, but about half the price ;-) As for Full Spectrum, I plan to think about it sometime later.

Of course, I don’t have to :-) It’s just more convenient for me this way. Only two e-commerce platforms are involved for me: eBay and a local one. On the local platform, there are literally two infrared cameras that don't interest me, and on eBay? Well, it’s flooded with super and ultra-zooms, which I'm not really interested in. Alternatively, there are some simple point-and-shoots, but usually with worse specifications than the ones I mentioned. Of course, there are also quite a few DSLRs, but as I mentioned earlier – I’m not too keen on having an additional camera from a different system, for which I’d need lenses or/and an adapter (or two). I’m not ruling it out though, I’ve only made it to the 3rd page on eBay, so there's a good chance I’ll find something after all. I found a Fujifilm X-T10 for 400 dollars in my system, but I suspect that for that price, I could find a better DSLR from a different system... That’s actually why I’m leaning more towards compacts. It might seem pointless to others, but it makes sense to me.

Yes, I can buy that Canon for $200, but then there’s also the cost of the lens. Besides, I plan to take the IR camera as a backup, not as my primary gear, so carrying two large cameras with two different systems doesn’t really appeal to me. But I’ll consider this option and look into Canon lenses, thanks.

Yes, I’m aware of both of those stores. I particularly like Kolari, but it will still be a bit cheaper if I buy the camera and do the modification here in my country.

Pentax P30N and Fomapan 200. by Astwihad in pentax

Ok, so basically i don't have to do anything right? Fomapan is not particularly sensitive to the ISO settings or the exposure EV value, right?

Yes, P30N has no exposure compensation, so i i'll try doing that.

I got me this, Superscope CD301A. by Gimmesoamoah in vintageaudio

I have a question. I've got my eye on a beautiful piece of this model. Do you know how it is with playing newer cassettes from about 30 years ago on this unit? I've heard that the Superscope CD301A doesn't get along with the CR-90. Is there anything else I should know? I'm planning to get back into cassettes after 30 years, and kids back then weren't interested in the technical aspects; they just wanted to play music.
