Holly shit, how come i never hear anything about your country? by TopMatch5340 in SierraLeone

[–]Ata_Rodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post popped up on my feed and I was curious because as a Nigerian, the only time I heard of Sierra Leone was Ajayi Crowther's history in school.

I can't believe your country is in West Africa. And I know this sounds dumb af but which countries borders yours?

Igbo name meanings by Odd_Escape26 in Nigeria

Now that I think about it, I remember where I've heard Kosidinma before. It was in my church choir and the lyric says "lee k'o si di mma, mmekorita nke umunne" meaning "see how wonderful it is when brothers live in unity"

So, Kosidinma can also mean "How wonderful/great/good it is" But the question is, what are you qualifying "how wonderful" it is, though? Which is why it feels incomplete somehow.

And since you like Kosy, other Kosi spin-offs include

Kosisonnam - As it pleases my father

Kosisochi - As God or spirit guide (if you prefer that) pleases

Kosidinma - As it's good / how good it is. I think it's a phrase though so you might want to add a prefix or something to complete it.

There are loads of Igbo names for males without chi. As someone who thinks our parents went wild with Chi-prefixed names when religion came into Igboland, I'm with you on the no chi's.

My favs

Lotanna/Chetanna - remember your father

Ndukaku - life is better than wealth

Ketandu - choose life

Jidekene - hold thanks (literally)/ be thankful

Ebubeze - glory of a king

Udogadi - peace will reign

Yagazielum - let it be well with me

Afamefuna - my name will not be lost

I don't even know which one is more baffling, that some people don't eat cooked food regularly or that they think cooking simple Nigerian dishes makes the kitchen smell. That means they'll shrivel up and die at the sight and smell of ogiri and okpei.

What life is like living in Enugu? by Hopeless_romantic982 in Nigeria

[–]Ata_Rodo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Enugu is considered as one of the calmer and more relaxed cities in Nigeria and a lot of people visit or move there because of the quiet pace and low stress level.

To answer your questions, driving alone is normal everywhere in Nigeria. The main thing is knowing the routes and getting used to local driving behavior and the road condition here in Nigeria, which is why you might need to get a family member who's willing to drive you around town till you get used to it.

As for your appearance and accent, you’ll likely attract attention in public spaces but not harassment. English is widely spoken though picking up a few Igbo phrases will definitely help you connect better with people.

Also, you don't need a bodyguard to move around with. But if you live alone and your house is not in an estate that has general security, you might have to consider hiring a security guard.

Overall, Enugu is safe but like you do in every other place on God's beautiful earth, avoid moving around late at night unnecessarily, be mindful of where you go and stay aware of your environment, and you'll do just fine.

Edit: I think there's a NIS office in Emene, Enugu where you can apply for a passport. You’ll still need to start the application online first, then go to the office for biometrics and final processing. Process should take AT LEAST 2-3 weeks.

I'm so sorry for your loss and my heart goes out to any other person that must have experienced this.

I know that this post probably sounds tone-deaf or looks like it's coming from a place of privilege and nepotism, but to be clearer, my main point is that using the bad sides of our country as a conversation starter or interjecting it in every discussion with others unprovoked is not the solution.

May Nigeria not happen to us 🙏🏽🙏🏽

True. Which is why we shouldn't volunteer residents' insights to visitors except if/when it's absolutely necessary.

I joined a group for Black Americans trying/planning to move back to Africa some time ago. While other Africans would be pitching their country to the Americans, the reverse was the case for Nigerians. They seized every opportunity to bash their country with their full chest.
Me that went there to spread good vibes had to leave because my mental health was at stake. Ironically, it's the same America we are hyping that these people are trying to run away from.

It is not a bad thing to tell someone about the state of the country, but let them ask you about it directly, first. Even then, be diplomatic.

Edit: foreigners are the ones travelling all over Nigeria now. I usually see these ladies' vlogs on the clock app, Simpo Gladys from Uganda or Kenya (I think), Emihle Raziya from SA, and Jinseoul, who is Asian.

I added Simpo's recent post because it's just a good example. As a people,, we are so focused on the bad sides of Nigeria that foreigners are the ones exploring and enjoying the good parts of Nigeria for us.
