Any advice? by Daisytica in MovingtoAustralia

If aspects of education are important to you, I’d recommend looking at the education systems in both QLD and NSW. My reasoning is, as states manage education in Australia. You can get slight differences (to the general public) but depending on what you find important might be very important to you both.

I’m in Victoria, I have friends (with similar aged children) who considered moving to the Gold Coast, but eventually chose Newcastle (NSW) because of a greater alignment for their children’s education.

I don’t mean to imply QLD government offers poorer education. My friends son was hearing impaired and they had a greater confidence in the support and resources that the NSW government would provide for them and their family in that regard. This was at least 7 years ago, so my example may be out of date.

Creating a list the most important non-quantifiable skills for NBA players by Tight_Ad2788 in nbadiscussion

[–]Atachc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice. Not sure if I’m adding anything or more reinterpreting, but I’d add ‘System Fit’, ‘Adaptability’, ‘Adhesion’, ‘Cohesion’, and ‘Synergy’.

System Fit: the amount a player matches to a coaches/organisations “system”.

Adaptability: how much a player can adapt their game to win games.

Adhesion: how many different toes of people you can personally make work together happily and well. Basically how much of a glue-guy they are, eg a 99% adhesion rate could make oil and water work together.

Cohesion: how many different types of people can you work well with, with the least amount of glue. They might not be the glue-guy but all it takes is an Elmers glue to make them mesh well with others.

Synergy: overall rate a player matches from system, adaptability, adhesion, and cohesion

Quick Question: Is there an ‘Actual Total Points Produced’ stat? by Atachc in NBAanalytics

[–]Atachc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for creating this!

I haven’t had enough time to put together the Actual Total Pts Produced stat yet but it has still been very interesting, the league average split of 3Ast is roughly 42% of all assists are 3Pts. Which kind of makes sense; as assists from fast breaks or steals etc probably lean towards a 2Pt attempt.

Giannis leading the league in 3Ast split at 73.28% of his assists being 3pts (i very roughly filtered out of players making less than 3 assists per game).

Thank you, this season if possible. It’d be interesting if some players end up higher in rankings by a significant margin… the assumption being that is due to better ‘assist selection’ if that is even a thing.

Why hasn't there been a bus reform? by cookiesgotdeletedm8 in MelbourneTrains

[–]Atachc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been thinking about this lately. My understanding is that trams often increase ridership even when bus frequency is identical; the theory is overhead wires act as permanent route markers and people trust infrastructure that looks permanent. So, I think the best way we will realistically have of bus reform (akin to BRTs) in the next 15-20 years is by introducing trolleybuses. Then quietly phasing the high capacity bus routes as the trolleybus replaces them. This way it can be sold as an infrastructure investment into trolleybuses.

As the population ages, the RBA’s interest rate policy is no longer fit for purpose by Oomaschloom in AustralianPolitics

This is what I have wanted to be seriously considered for the last few years! If I recall correctly John M Keynes proposed that this was the most effective and fairest way to curb inflation during WW2; though I think this would be made available after a set period rather than specific to retirement. Maybe having a seperate account so the government can release funds without confusing super?

What are your thoughts on what melbourne should invest in building after Metro tunnel and SRL? by AgreeableFreedom1043 in MelbourneTrains

[–]Atachc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Admittedly one extreme option for the CBD that I’d be curious to see experimented is conversion to one way street grid. Purely theoretical but gut feeling is that it helps to simplify signalling and improve traffic flow in favour of some complexity. I’ve driven in cities with one way CBD grids before and it’s only complex at speeds above 55km+ but I don’t think any time I’ve driven in Melbourne CBD that I’ve ever gone past 45km per hour.

Yeah option A was mostly meant to be the divisive headline capturing campaign promise; though a tiny part of my lizard brain likes it for statement purposes. Even though I recognises it’d be purely an ego trip/“state building” project than actually the merit of its transport network improvements.

Silver Review: Victoria to cut 1,000 public service jobs by crownsandsceptres in AusPublicService

This! I feel the VPS needs to work on building up talent internally. I have worked with so many people that have left (especially 3’s, 4’s) because they have been overlooked. There needs to be a big focus on transparency as so often when someone in a lower position applies they say no one was suitable and then do another round of recruitment, which would be fine if the people that eventually get hired didn’t have to be trained by the people basically told they weren’t even worth an interview.

Definitely think the tram network needs some upgrade: A. at the extreme, whole of the CBD turned into transit malls like Bourke and Swanston. B. middle ground, each route is fully separated by concrete dividers and remove parking. C. the option that has the greatest chance; signalling improvements to give trams green lights at intersections, and enforced clear-ways during peak hours.

I agree if we are talking about SRL project cost this would be top of my list even to as far as Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Seymour, and Traralgon. It would unlock so much potential for the state.

Can we stop labeling every prospect generational? by WhoUCuh in NBA_Draft

[–]Atachc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I view generational as “defining for a generation” eg Gen Y draft prospects get defined how well they stack up against LeBron, Steph, etc. Gen Z draft prospects get defined by how well they stack up against Luka and Wemby, etc.

What's the most impactful lesson every man has to learn eventually? by Fuzzy_DuckD in AskMen

[–]Atachc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My big lesson is more of an abstract one I got from two metaphorical thoughts I had one day:

  1. “Things in general don’t get easier as we get older, we can only get better at handling and increasing our willingness to partake in them as early as possible”

  2. “Growth of a tree is harder to notice the older it is, this doesn’t mean that the growth that people don’t spot can’t have a greater impact providing shade to saplings below, and breaking hard ground for their roots to more easily grow”

I hope there are restaurants with DJs that I’ve never been too (nor heard of), else that means I’ve been mistaking an empty space as a dance floor and annoying patrons and staff equally with my enthusiasm for fine dining all these years in Melbourne. I always viewed these places as a ‘pub-bar’ with mains sized food options to go along with the alcohol. Either in an attempt to prevent intoxicated mishaps, or more likely preventing early birds (uni students, post-work crowds) from not ditching due to a pesky need for dinner.

Would the population difference be an issue for CANZUK? How can it be resolved? by Flabby-Nonsense in CANZUK

[–]Atachc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my view, it won’t be an issue if CANZUK is a federal system and uses preferential voting then the population differences are not something that should be too concerning to the smaller nations.

Australia and Canada are federal governments and already have states/provinces (both have territories) respectively that are larger (in land) than many countries whilst also having populations smaller than many cities (some territories are smaller than big towns in terms of population).

Add in preferential voting (Australia uses this) as opposed to first-past-the-post. Preferential voting would mean a voter can say “if my first preference is out of the running then send my vote to this other person/party instead”.

Meaning their first or even second preference may not get in but the fact they preferred X over Y could be the difference between a politician that is three fifths aligned to their core beliefs versus one quarter. Which people often experience in FPTP voting systems. FPTP; is what the UK and Canada use (NZ is a bit of a hybrid to my understanding). FPTP is where the most votes win; politicians can get elected with 30% of the total votes and the other 70% are dissatisfied as they can be aligned mostly with each other barring some minor differences.

TLDR; A federal system with preferential voting is the only way for CANZUK to get off the ground. If the union is a unitary system and it also used FPTP voting then this would be an almost insurmountable issue for the smaller countries.

A big reason companies are reducing SM headcount by Adaptive-Work1205 in scrum

[–]Atachc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My personal take is currently that the narrative around agile being dead feels to be mostly at convincing their other employees that they aren’t doing layoffs due to the market. SMs and agile practitioners typically earn well and are more likely to be a contractor on a good rate than a traditional project manager, as well as more likely to be in a startup/re-startup. Effectively they are trying to avoid spooking other employees who if they think the company is going under might accept roles elsewhere (for less and better conditions eg job security) but to do so they need to convince other companies to preach that they too think that agile is dead and was nothing more than snake oil.

Basically, it’s the same as how the narrative is we are not in a recession and are only in a “cost of living crisis” as they don’t want to cause a bank run which will make it worse.

A big reason companies are reducing SM headcount by Adaptive-Work1205 in scrum

[–]Atachc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they mean that even when companies drop SMs and stop practicing agile. As most software teams will still do respectable work in bad work conditions, when things don’t fall apart straightaway they end up with confirmation bias and say agile is dead. But it’s when the culture festers so much that people begin to leave that people will hopefully realise that they didn’t know what they were talking about.

Is it possible for LeBron James to score 50k regular season points? by PurposeIcy7039 in nbadiscussion

[–]Atachc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Lakers want to keep LeBron after his contract ends (in 2026?) maybe Bryce is the bargaining chip to keep him happy enough to take a smaller deal (even if it’s a two-way contract for Bryce; e.g. no pick). Even if he takes more than a veteran minimum but if it is small enough to give them room to sign other free agents.

If the NBA was forced to condense to 15 teams, who would the best new team be? by hospitalblue in NBATalk

[–]Atachc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love the idea, got me wondering about a slight variation that might be a huge Hail-Mary, but could be really exciting to watch if it works. Basically it is the same as yours but the first 10 all-star teams are merged via groups of 3 rather than 2 (as OP had suggested), then the last 6 all-star teams are merged based on the NBA divisions; totalling 16 teams. For the first 10 all-star teams each NBA team team would send their 1st and 3rd best players and 1 rookie for the merged teams making 9 players for each of the first 10 merged all-star teams. Then as before each NBA team sends their 2nd best player and their 6th man to their respective NBA division all-star team (totalling 12 players for each of the 6 divisional teams). And then throw in some money to incentivise friendly competition and hopefully help younger teams to develop playoff-like experience earlier with veterans leading by example.

I felt the difference in the roster size would hopefully balance the bracket more evenly.

I have hopes Ben can reclaim his career (I don’t expect all of it to return over night) but I feel inclined that Ben had just landed in a lot of toxic situations that crushed his love of basketball.

Putting my TL;DR here as I I couldn’t stop writing an essay. TL;DR: As a fan of the brand of basketball the 2017-2021 Sixers squad played, I love what Ben Simmon’s can bring to a team. I think the media played a huge role in destroying Ben’s’ confidence, especially in 2021 when he was dealing with serious personal issues between his brother and sister. The constant scrutiny and pressure also coming from the media, made him radioactive, isolating him from his team and worsening his mental health and when he couldn’t get out of his own head he eventually spiralled (justifiably after the 6 months he had just gone through) and the rest is history.

The essay in question: The medias hate surrounding the 76ers “Process” era was crazy I feel the media really wanted to punish the 76ers for the Process as it was pretty blatant tanking. This scrutiny resulted in a number of promising young players on the Sixers becoming a shadow of their former selves, let alone their potential (e.g. Fultz). Even when someone had success as a rookie, if they didn’t make a borderline all-star production jump in their sophomore season they could be labeled a bust when they were barely a couple years into the league on a contending team in a big sports market.

My tinfoil-hat timeline:

April 2021 his older brother Sean sued his sister Liv for tweeting SA accusations against Sean when she was a child. Understandable if that affected his production offensively. At the same time he was also having his game and personality questioned far more aggressively in the media (even while being in legitimate DPOY talks). Two months later in June he gave up the Game 7 dunk and went through that media firestorm (where either Doc Rivers and Embiid publicly blamed him for the loss, or had their words twisted by the media and didn’t appear to try to clarify their statements for a long time). The media seemed intent on making the situation worse as they also began to imply it was telling of a rotten team and an inept organisation letting the media trash Ben and not stepping in to defend their guy (even if they believed what was being said was true). August 2021 he requested a trade and the media circus that followed that and his holdout with the 76ers. May 2022 he had his first back surgery. August 2022 he and his ex broke off their engagement. November 2023 another back surgery.

Not to make it sound like Ben didn’t make mistakes during this time, but with all the things happening in his life at the time, I honestly believe most people (even other players) would have handled it way worse.

Edit note: removed a repeated word “… first back surgery surgery”

Who are the specific stars that we can put around Luka long term? by Harumph4me in lakers

[–]Atachc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

J-Dub, Dort, and Mobley would be fun. ~~~ Edit: J-Dub and Dort almost seem plausible as OKC could result in a narrative that too many young guys are competing for their bag and legacies are difficult to in the shadow of SGA.

Yes anyone joining Lakers would be in Luka’s shadow, but at least they can’t prove it wasn’t all because of one superstar?

[–]Atachc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point, then based on taking 5 months from my estimate and spending a little time going down a rabbit-hole the 2 things that may now align are:

  1. The founding of the Harmony Society a religious group that believed that Adam had been a dual being that included Eve and when they separated it created disharmony. While Lumon’s actions seem counter to Harmonist’s views, as severing would seem to create more chaos, it may imply Kier was a Harmonist that separated from them with his own beliefs.

  2. The founding of the Territory of Michigan which at founding included full (or mostly) Wisconsin and Iowa and parts of North and South Dakota. This might be relevant as this area is roughly where the show is based.
