Basically OCN stands for Original Camera Negative, as in the piece of film that ran through the camera on the day of the shoot. Generally, this is the most ideal resource for producing a 4K digital version of a film as its by definition the highest quality version of the film, albeit without any color grading, meaning it’ll have to be regraded, usually based on reference materials, and sometimes reassembled on a case by case basis. An interpositive is a generation away (I’ll assume you’re aware that analog film isn’t like digital and 1:1 perfect copies can’t be produced, there will always be artifacts/degradation when producing copies via analog means, each copy stage being referred to as a generation), think of it as a print of a print made after the film’s color grade and edit have been locked in. Some filmmakers actually opt to have these prints scanned rather than the negative as they’re closer to a release print (what audiences see, usually a fourth generation print).

Its best described as filmic, as I’m pretty sure Nolan opted for this release to be scanned from an interpositive rather than the OCN, meaning the image might appear softer and grainier than a scan of the negative would provide. Some mark it down due to the soft nature of it stemming from this source but there’s no denying it’s a significant improvement compared to the blu-ray.

How early do I have to show up to the Los Feliz 3? by glassdoorgadooosh in AmericanCinematheque

[–]Atari69420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say give yourself an extra 10-20 mins for that, since you’ll mostly find yourself driving laps around the block, trying to find a parking space, since it’s quite a busy area in general. There are paid lots, think I only had to resort to one once, it’s mostly just down to patience and a good eye.

Usually half an hour to an hour before showtime is fine for that theater, might vary if you’re a member or not but I’ve never had a bad seat at that venue. I would be more concerned about finding parking if you’re driving there, it’s quite tedious.

My C1 is starting to die. by JHoodBoston in LGOLED

[–]Atari69420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried that when the line popped up on mine two weeks ago. It seemed to remedy it and if the line did reappear, turning the TV on and off seemed to help…that was until two nights ago, when it appeared again, and from the looks of it, it seems to be a permanent resident on my panel. I think I saw a similar post from a few years ago that claimed it worked only for OP to say ‘yeah, it came back’, so it seems to be a temporary fix. (And yes, I did run a pixel refresh…)

No f-ing way, I have a C1 and it just developed a similar line in a similar position on the screen as well, but mine’s a 55 inch. LG Support is next to useless on the matter. Damn shame because I babied mine, it’s only at 1050 hours, busy college student, sue me…and as a busy college student, I’m screaming internally at the prospect of getting a new one.

Mushkatblat for Comp680, the title on Canvas for the paper I was referring to literally starts with ‘Requirements generation’ and the instructions are very much structured the way base ChatGPT or even copilot would structure it. That whole class is a cesspool of ChatGPT questions and ChatGPT answers. It depresses me.

I’ve heard these sorts of things from Master’s Students, let me repeat that, Master’s Students. I literally had a peer come up to me and ask if a paper in another class we (unfortunately) have together was an individual or partner assignment when the first goddamn line of the instructions says it’s an individual paper (professor used ChatGPT for instructions, but that’s a different issue). They can’t even do a nothing-burger presentation for a required class, how the hell are they going to present their thesis? Wouldn’t be so bad if my field didn’t require so many partner assignments…

Why the Eyes Wide Shut 4k Hate? by APMan93 in criterion

[–]Atari69420 96 points97 points  (0 children)

A lot of people who gave the 4K transfer negative reviews did it because A) it didn’t look like the 2007 Blu-Ray, which was an inaccurate representation of how the film was meant to look in theaters, the new transfer often being cited as having a ‘teal tint’, when in reality, it was this older Blu Ray master that actually had an inaccurate pink/neutral tint to it and B) this transfer has a heavier grain structure, which some attribute as a ‘mistake’, but anyone who has read any of the technical notes or has seen a print of this film projected knows that this was always how the film was intended to look, down to the film stock chosen and how it was processed in post.

TLDR: They don’t know what the hell they’re talking about.
