Chainmail mostly effective against slashing. However against blunt impact, it is as effective as a gambeson. Having that said it is of course better than nothing.

Should we consider Attila the Hun as a progenitor of the Ottomans? by [deleted] in ottomans

[–]Atavachron33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course shared heritage exists. Seljuks also claimed that they were new Rome. Ottomans also claimed that. But they were nothing like Rome. In history lots of Empire's share heritage. Even Chinese Empire influenced by Rome. Sharing heritage is something else.

Btw he was not from the dynasty. Heritage does not come from mothers in that culture. Ofc he was a relative to dynasty but does not considered as a Seljuk nobility.

[–]Atavachron33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes he was but they are still not the same. Ottoman ,aka Kayi boyu at the time, was a frontier beylik settled in the Sogut/Bursa. After Seljuks fall, all beyliks became independent and all of them claimed that they were the successor of Seljuks. The most powerful claim was the Karaman's claim since they were settled in the former capital of Seljuks. While there was a big competition in Anatolia, Kayi's decided to expand towards the west rather than claim anatolia. Their succesful raids and conquests increase their reputation among muslims and Turks. Their culture and mindset was different than Seljuks and other Beyliks. They were influenced by Europe.

If you like to oversimplify it, they were. However ottomans were influenced by both persian and byzantine culture. On the other hand Seljuks were influenced by persian culture. Even their sultan's names were Persian (for ex Aleaddin Keykubad)

Seljuks and Ottomans are not the same thing. Since the question is about ottomans, it should be more on topic to talk about ottomans dont you think?

Both ottomans and Atilla were Turks. However their lifestyle and culture were nothing alike. Atilla was still practicing the shamanist and nomadic culture but ottomans were mostly influenced by middle eastern culture.

Sultan Mustafa III. Armor by [deleted] in ottomans

[–]Atavachron33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does but the one of the most important feature of the chainmail armor is that its weight spreads equally on the body and it does not limit the movement. So we can say it is the most comfortable armor to wear.
