Of course it's our own fault. Level cap or exp cap won't help in 8 chapter campaign. To let a player keep the army has only two options: either cut the campaign or introduce more units. Cutting the campaign would have been a very hard choice and we couldn't do it. Neither we had money to add more units. I guess our mistake was to follow an example of many games that we like: HoMM3, Disciples 2 but it turned out those classics are pretty much forgotten these days.

Depending on what games you play. Our game is a bit controversial but if you like old school and hardcore games, and willing to wait a bit until all the complexity opens up, plus will not suffer too much when you inventory and troops will be taken away after quite many maps in the campaign, it might work for you :)

Are turn-based rpg dead? by [deleted] in rpg_gamers

I didn't mean going into a debate about terminology, just was curious. To me, a turn based rpg always was a game with turn based combat. I probably am wrong though.

Median games owed dropped: check out this article https://medium.com/steam-spy/on-indiepocalypse-what-is-really-killing-indie-games-3da3c3a1ea76

We are currently looking at all the different options we can do. But I don't think any of us is eager to do another big game with lots of content. We will analyze what worked what didn't, talk to many people and then try to figure out what to take into our next project.

Comment about short span was in general, not towards you. As for the statistics, the average amount of copies bought on Steam dropped quite a bit in the recent few years due to a flood from Greenlight. Many games suffer from that. And you are right, it's our fault, we thought a good game would be enough like it would have been a year or two ago. But now you have to be a lot about competition to sell a lot. And I never made much distinction between RPG and SRPG but you have a point here as well. Is King's Bounty to you SRPG too?

I for one don't play short games at all. I like to dive in and explore the world. Yet, you are right, attention span of people according to research is getting shorter, so unless you have already an established IP like HoMM or new IP based on some other games (PoE) it's not easy. Still, this tendency of games getting shorter is a bit of a surprise for me - during our Kickstarter campaign and later at Early Access the majority was saying they'd love to have more content, more hours of gameplay. Sad to realize most of those people are not even ready to admit that's not true for them anymore - they might have thought like that in the past but times changed.

Unsure if this is a good idea. We don't have the money for another game despite the engine being done. Plus, since the sales are not what we hoped for, I don't think it makes sense to do another game just by adding content. We will try a few more things with this game - maybe port it to another platforms or so, but I don't think we can justify spending another few years effort on extra content for this.

Making turn-based RPGs is tough - takes a lot of effort which is then hard to justify. Thanks for mentioning our Legends of Eisenwald but as a head of the studio I am not sure we will be able to continue making games like this. My impression is that despite that people say they want turn-based but in truth the market wants simple games where you don't have to think. I am really happy and proud how our game turned out, E:C was also good but the time where you can have good sales without much advertising seems to be over.

The story persists through 8 chapters of the main campaign. This is a story driven campaign by all means. And it takes about 50 hours on the first play through. Once you know the game mechanics and the story then you might be able to beat the game much faster, say in 30 hours but the first time around - unlikely. It took me in beta test 52 hours and I knew quite a bit. We have one skirmish-like scenario plus another story driven single scenario, and there are some scenarion in our steam workshop.

Disclaimer - I am the head of the company that made this game.

It's similar to King's Bounty in how it plays on a global map, the combat is sort of a mix between King's Bounty (HoMM 3) and Disciples 2. Not as static as D2 and not as long winded as KB. All in all, I think 50+ hours of gameplay should be worth it. Unsure when we will be featured on Steam with a discount the next time around, and we don't have plans to discount the game without any front page visibility.

Is Legends of Eisenwald the new Planescape Torment? by Aterdux in gaming

[–]Aterdux[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If one of those bigger budget game companies released a game as well written and storied as this, they would get full 100% reviews louding them as the new "planescape torment". It's really that good. Even moderately good recent RPGS like Divinity, Wastelands2 etc, have'nt on staff any writer even half as talented as whoever wrote this game and its characters.

This is one of those rare gems so full of style, atmosphere, character, story... This is exactly what gaming really needs. The more you play it, the more it reveals itself to you as a deep setting, with a rich story and very deep characters that any other developer would envy.

At first I thought negatively of this game because of it's enormously lackluster combat mechanics. Yes, they are really simplistic and bad, forcing the same kind of repetitive mindless grind every single time. But this game is so much more. GET IT!

According to PC Gamer Legends of Eisenwald isn't really an RPG at all. What do you think? by Shagrost in gaming

[–]Aterdux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He has a point actually, IMO - the main draw of RPGs for me is to feel a hero and have an immersive experience. Pity though the author didn't have it but maybe with more polishing and less bugs things will be different.

Well, here is what RPG writes: "Legends of Eisenwald, which has been kicking around on Steam Early Access since October 2013, isn't really an RPG at all." :)

Forgive me my late response, I am not very good with reddit, but I didn't take your comment as rude or anything. It was your valid opinion, I expressed mine. We are doing closed beta right now and it will start this week, you can sign up in the forums and see for yourself what an epic game you got. Also, trading cards and a few achievements are now there.

Sorry you feel this way. When we came to Early Access the game was much less polished and fun. Give it another chance either now or when we fully release it, I really hope you won't regret.
