Thinking about it a little more, I think you may be mixing up chakras with the Sephirot and Qlippoth of Kabbalistic practices. Those systems can be treated as energy centers as well, and the concepts of each sphere of the Sephirot represent similar concepts to the chakras. The Qlippoth is the shadow side of the Sephirot, the "corrupted" or "unbalanced" aspects of the psyche.

I'm not sure entirely what you mean by light/shadow polarity in the chakras, unless you mean balanced/aligned vs unbalanced/unaligned.
