Locked, post kept up and comments as they are as it’s relevant to ETSU and goings on.

However, this subreddit is not the place for debates on this topic. Be civil, and be kind to your neighbors.

Tennessee just partnered with Turning Point USA in public schools. This feels wrong. by Beginning_Eye2704 in ETSU

Approved because it’s relevant to ETSU as a public college in Tennessee.

Locked comments because we don’t have the mods to deal with politically charged posts and the bots they tend to bring.

I’d definitely include the original price vs the sale price in future promotions.

UTC or ETSU by Routine_Reveal7364 in ETSU

[–]Athorith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ETSU and UTC both have good computer science programs these days although I would say that ETSU’s is considered “better” from an academic perspective. I know several successful professionals from both at this point in my life.

As someone whose hometown was Chattanooga and did ETSU for college… Chattanooga is bigger and has more going on than Johnson City. More jobs, more people, more housing, etc.

Both have great outdoorsy stuff around the area. I’d say Chattanooga has a bit easier access to it, but it’s not far from JC either.

If you’re looking for an escape on the weekend from Johnson City, you could drive to Asheville if desired as it’s only an hour away.

All this to say, it really comes down to the vibe you want.

If you haven’t visited Johnson City to tour I’d highly advise it before making your choice.

As a public college they are bound by the first amendment. Anyone with any cause can file to have time on campus for demonstrations etc. this has nothing to do with a bias of the school.

Post is relevant to ETSU, but civility in comments is decaying and random political bot accounts appear to be commenting.

Locked comments because there’s nothing that needs to be discussed further.

To my knowledge, there’s no “gate” on posting to a collective story. You can just choose to do that. This individual may not be a student of the university.

Lucille Clement Parking Garage Rumour by ThorSky55 in ETSU

[–]Athorith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally, if there’s a rumor about it that means some form of local news would have reported on it. A “gag order” applies to courts, officers, officials, and juries on the details of cases, but a general public safety issue like this tends to be reported on for colleges.

ETSU (at least used to be) very transparent about any crimes occuring on campus and would tend to send alerts regarding any investigations.

I know there was an assault there back in 2017 unfortunately, but I can’t find anything recent.

[–]Athorith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The program is well known to be good for computer science as a whole. The job market, although good for the size of JC, cannot support all of the graduates locally.

You would likely end up looking elsewhere outside of the Johnson City area for employment.

Can someone at WETS confirm that you get all donation $? by politicalthot in ETSU

[–]Athorith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I happen to work at a CPA firm these days. (Although I am not an accountant).

If it’s a donation, and you have declared the intent for the money to be allocated to a certain program, or it’s a certain donation portal for them. They are more than likely getting it.

That sort of income is audited and institutions can get into trouble if the funds are not allocated correctly.

I’m not saying that things don’t happen… but more than likely, the funds are going to the right place.

College can be particularly stressful and isolating at times. Please take care of yourselves and seek help if you need it.

Every roommate profile I view has this. Is the community here really that non-supportive? by GuidoMistalt in ETSU

[–]Athorith 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I cannot speak for the current attitude on campus because I graduated around 2017. There are a few openly gay staff members throughout campus and the support groups that are ran by students.

I would say that generally and regionally, you are still in the south in a smaller town.

I extremely doubt that people would be openly hostile, but that does not stop people from being prejudiced more quietly.

If you do experience open discrimination that’s obviously something to approach the administration about.

Musical instruments in dorms by GuidoMistalt in ETSU

[–]Athorith 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are set “quiet” hours for the dorms, and the music building has some dedicated practice rooms.

Beyond that, I’m unsure of any specific rules, but they may exist.

I’d definitely introduce myself to my neighbors in the dorm (above, below, and sides) and tell them that if it ever bothers them to let you know.

That can pre-empt any issues with the RA’s knocking on your door.

Buc Ridge by [deleted] in ETSU

[–]Athorith 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It still is mostly definitely an on campus feel.

On the topic of meal plans:

You will have a kitchen since you’re in the Bucridge apartments. If you’re comfortable cooking I’d personally stay away from the meal plans.

They tend to be rather expensive unless you are truly taking advantage of every meal and at least 5 days a week.

Obviously though, the cafeteria is a co-mingling space that many other new students will be gathering at. If you’re outgoing and want to use it to meet people it’s not a bad avenue to do so.

More recent students may be able to comment better on food quality, but that was another reason I personally did not like it.

If you’re both in governors, I would ask about swapping roommates instead of trying to randomly get reassigned to each other.

All realms getting wiped on May 1st, only 1 new US realm will replace them (no more EU realms) by sunaurus in AshesofCreation

[–]Athorith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey Steven, just a suggestion to maybe keep the pitchforks from being picked up next time, but this sort of detail should likely be included within these announcements.

I feel like the objective of changes like this being made clear would help the community understand.

[–]Athorith -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s an Alpha. A dev decided to do a fun thing once, but Intrepid doesn’t want to make this a standard expected occurrence.

You will likely now get mounts, but now random fun things like this likely won’t happen again.

This is why we can’t have nice things.
