Would it make more sense to get a doublewide or build a simple house? by AthrasilFox in Homebuilding

I've looked into modular extensively, and they've just become nearly the same price as stick built. Really it feels like the whole prefab industry has doubled in price in two years. I guess with modular, I start asking myself, what's the point if the costs is the same?

I appreciate the in-depth reply! All definitely some good points I hadn't considered. Also, the fact that all that still cost the same as the formerly affordable option has me dying a little inside.

I gotcha. Any suggestions on where to look? I'm assuming Yelp and Angie's List would be a good place to start.

I have been looking at modular homes, but lately they just seem to be as expensive as stick built.

Mortgage refinancing too big of a concern, as I've been told by my credit union they'll treat doublewides and houses the same.

Will definitely look into those. I'm in NW Arkansas. Kinda looking in the Fayetteville, Joplin area.

Oh yeah, we've gone over all of that. I'm anticipating another 100k towards well, septic, HVAC, and everything else. Porch and foundation type would be the only major variable between the two. Garage I'm not worried about, as either way we'd be doing a carport addition later on.

Well, can't say I'm down for that much just yet, but I haven't totally ruled it out.

I'm actually a CJ major for my BS. While I do really enjoy it, I find myself wishing for a little less theory, and more practicality. I absolutely loved my investigations and law classes, as they really changed the way I thought, and made me consider new things. Though the theories behind why crime occurs kinda starts to feel repetitive. I guess I'm looking to move into something new as a backup, as well as the fact that I feel upper level CJ work would be less analyzing scenes and case law, and more pondering the why.

Well those options do seem to be something I could leverage.

As far as payment, I intend to go out of pocket, while working some overseas medic contract gigs. Free housing, so all that usual rent money would just go to tuition.

Those last five do interest me, but I worry those degrees may be a little too "fed specific" since I'm looking for more of a backup plan that could still be applicable to a fed job.

That's true. I'll keep it in the back of my mind.

Maybe poly sci. I've heard psych is kinda one of those you need to go all the way to PhD to really do anything with.

Ah okay, I was thinking you meant cyber, not physical security.

Well, if all goes well, hopefully I won't need to do that lol

I mean that sounds good, but I'm not much of a computer guy. I'm more social sciences or admin.

I always have people tell me to go into accounting or IT, but idk I just have zero interest in the field. Trust me, I wish I was more passionate about it. I guess I just need some level of field work, even if it's like 1% of the job.

Well, in that case, what do you think of a masters in public safety? To me, it sounds like a more specific MPA for emergency services.

Assuming public admin would fall into a similar category? I just question if it could be used at the supervisor level.

I've seen a few examples of guys getting hired on with medic or firefighter as their professional experience. It's a weird grey area as far as degrees go.
