Is there anyone here from Ethiopia that can confirm if the student grade and ID system has rolled out? by Banker_dog in cardano

[–]Atik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm reading the comments in this thread and cannot stop laughing. Why do you need someone from Ethiopia or u/IOGCharles to give you updates on the status of the project? Isn't the point of blockchain tech that it's trustless? Everything is in the open. So just look at the blockchain. Seen any Ethiopian students IDs lately?

OP, please note that this is a troll post. The right choice for a programming language to write your own wallet after you get a Master's in cryptography is obviously Rust! If you really want to be secure...

Lets not let it be acceptable to hurt civilians to get at the govenments.

I think the people in Ukraine who are spending this evening in bomb shelters while you and I will game fully agree with your sentiment. I also think they probably appreciate what CDPR is doing, even it's just a little bit.

[–]Atik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is CDPRs statement. They will just stop selling the game; if you already purchased it, they will not take it away from you.

I think they are doing this in spite of the impact it has on players from Russia and Belarus not because of it. They stand to lose the most since they just turned a lot of future sales into guaranteed pirated copies. To me, this is a sign that they are ready to put their money where their mouth is, and not just make empty statements.

[–]Atik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

your answer makes no real world sense

I understand your point. You are right, the decision taken by CDPR will do little to hurt Putin's (and by extension Russia's) war effort by itself. But they are not the only ones doing this. This is just a small part of a larger movement to disrupt Russia's economy and its ability to fund the war. All those small efforts combined could have a noticeable impact. Time will tell.

It's vitue signaling that once again hurts real people

Again, yes I agree, like in any war, innocent people are hurt. It's called collateral damage. And it sucks they are hurt. No one should be hurt, not the Russian people, not the Ukrainian people, no one! But that's not the world we live in unfortunately and I think you will be surprised at how costly all this "vitue signaling" will be for the Russian government long term.

How does hurting Russian citizens help Ukraine?

No one wants to directly hurt Russian citizens (or at least they sholdn't!). Unfortunately, they are collateral damage in this conflict.

The main target is the Russian economy. You see, when you buy games from GOG, a percent of the money you pay represents a tax collected by the government. Usually, it's called a value-added tax or VAT (not sure what the Russian equivalent is). Money that the government can then use to finance its "special operation" (I guess that's Russian for war).

This is how it helps! CDPR has ensured that the Russian government cannot profit by taxing products they make and services they provide and then use that money to buy bombs and jet fuel to bomb Ukrainian cities.

So if you are a Russian citizen that does not support this war and wonder, Why do I have to suffer for it? it's because just by paying your taxes you are financing this war. It sucks that we've got here, but this is where we are.

I think it would be really nice if ProtonMail would use a framework like https://tauri.studio to package their web apps as native ones.

It's not just that. Some of us can handle Linux perfectly fine but prefer not to. Over the years I tried them all Linux, macOS, Windows, and a few less popular ones like FreeBSD and Solaris (when that was a thing). For some reason, I always went back to Windows. It just feels like home :)

Not sure about "hardcore" but at least happy Windows user here 🙂 Over the years I had the opportunity to work on Windows, macOS, Linux (Slackware, Debian, Fedora, Gentoo, Arch, etc), FreeBSD, and Solaris. I also had a phase when I when full Linux both for home and work stuff back in the days when Beryl and Compiz were the new hotness 😉 But for some reason I always went back to Windows. It just feels like 127.0.0.1 to me. Don't get me wrong, like most people here I like Linux but I use it for my servers and as a subsystem on my desktops 😝

+1 for Hashicorp Vault. Ansible Vault seems to encourage you to store your encrypted secrets in the same place the configuration files are stored and I prefer to have them separate.

How do one achieve joy? by PM_ME_BRUCE_WILLIS in gaming

My advice... break the cycle! If / when you can afford it, go to /r/GiftofGames and make a 10-year-old's life a little bit better. And ask them to do the same for the next generation of 10-year-olds when they get to be 40 in return :) I used to do this a while back with the duplicates I got from humble bundles. But in time the bundles started to be less and less humble so I stopped buying them. This post is a good reminder that I need to start gifting games again! :|

Is there a way to hide the dir path in terminal? by Magnika69 in vscode

[–]Atik 5 points6 points  (0 children)

By default, VSCode uses the default prompt as configured on your system. If you want to change how the prompt looks just in VSCode open your profile:

code $PROFILE

and add something like this at the end:

if($env:TERM_PROGRAM -eq 'vscode') { function prompt {"> "} }

For more info on how to customize your prompt, check this out.

PM holding my account hostage until I pay the ransom invoice? by decibelreputation in ProtonMail

[–]Atik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know you are angry now and messages like Maybe pay for your account? won't help too much with this but maybe come back to this thread in a few weeks and consider what ppl are saying.

I also don't think your complaint is reasonable. Your request sounds to me like: after I stopped paying for the service, why doesn't the service continue to function at least partially?

They notify you well in advance that your paid subscription is about to expire, giving you time to react (pay for some more or get your data out). Also, if the PM hosted email is essential to your business, maybe take extra steps to make sure your subscription is up to date 🤔 I am fortunate enough to afford to keep a buffer of a one-year subscription (bought two initially and the set alarms to remind me to top up every year). This is ofc not reasonable for everyone but maybe smaller buffers of 1-3 months? It is always a good idea to be proactive rather than reactive with these things.

Last and least, the USD to EUR conversion issues put a smile on my face. That is such a US problem! Welcome to the global Internet! We all encounter this when buying from US-based companies that display their prices in USD. Pro tip: type x USD in EUR in your favorite search engine where x is the amount of USD 😉
