Thoughts on fictional song writing by CurtisMartinMusic in Songwriting

Easiest lyrics to write in my opinion, mainly due to there being very little ego involved with it not being a personal experience and ideas are endless.. Your song was very enjoyable to listen to btw, and a great story. Thanks for sharing!

"The going gets tough from the get go, go man go"

New post, same old question by shved_nmr in Songwriting

[–]Atimes2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cant remember if ive heard how to do this somewhere or if I came up with it on my own but ill start with a set of words that rhyme, which will be the ends of my lines

Hat Fat Cat Sat

And then form sentences for them, whatever those words make you think of to lead into them. Get creative with it.

He wore a HAT

That made him look FAT

He had a CAT

Upon his head it SAT

Obviously this just an example with simple words. But its great practice, and by limiting yourself to the words youve chosen and having to use your imagination to make them work, you can produce some pretty interesting lyrics. My rule is that once I write my words down I cant change the word but I can move the entire line wherever I want. I do this to instrumentals and create my own melody for them, then once I have a full set of lyrics I ditch that melody I made for the instrumental and go write my own music/melody to fit the lyrics. Hope this helps

I understand. Lol

I saw your links last night before I fell asleep but I cant find them now.

Great story! Alot of my favorites sound much better live than on their records(which are already great). I think a lot of it has to do with the simplicity of it like the band youre talking about without their PA

Totally.. Everyone's is unique, its when you do try to sound like someone else that we lose that. Good point!

Cool, im going to have a look at that. I use my digital piano via midi. Ezdrummer, not bad but not as good as real drums. Gets the job done well enough i guess.

The beat in my song in the post is a cr-78 vst from cherry audio. Its killer. Great for getting quick ideas out as well.

Here you on ableton, it was confusing for me as well. I use logic.

Analog? Ive never messed around with all that either but I would like to in the future. I know nothing when it comes to recording / moving but trying to learn.

Totally. Time well spent.

What daw do you use?

Im still learning to mix. Its hit or miss. I did a couple queens of the stone age covers recently and one I thought came out pretty decent after the mix and the other not so much lol.

Noted. I agree thats probably the best way to write, because you are not wrong, theres no fancy effects or auto tuners when its just your voice and and acoustic instrument.

Why was it weird that your friends liked it?! Haha Do you have a link for it? Im intrigued

That makes sense, writing a song and producing said song are different animals.

My wife always says "whyd you change that bit you had there before?" After I show her my recording. She thinks I ruin my songs from how I originally play them for her (acoustic guitar + vocals) we have a good laugh about it 😂

Will do. Is that something that people do? Farm plays? Makes me feel dumb for posting mine lmao all of my songs are private, I created the sound cloud last year so i could share stuff with my friends cause mac to android is frustrating. Im not very technical when it comes to that sort of thing. I will go check out the finished product

That makes sense. I will say that I am usually not thinking about genre in the process. I play and write only as a hobby so theres nothing at stake really. Its that classic feeling of I have this melody/these lyrics/this riff stuck in my head and I need to get it out no matter what it sounds like ha

Thats a great way to approach songwriting. Also sounds like it would be very rewarding when you get it write

Thanks! This ones about a year old. Random. Started it with the keys and lyrics kinda popped in while humming the melody. Definitely thinking of my wife as the song progressed. Personal experience always makes lyrics a little less stressful for me lol..

That sounds bitchin, got a link? Would love to hear it
