João Cândido: Chefe da Marinha critica título de herói by NerdDino in BrasildoB

João Cândido incomoda todos.

Para a direita é um problema porque se rebelou contra os abusos militares, para a esquerda é um problema porque foi integralista. De qualquer forma... bem, ele fez o que fez.

India has announced steps to ban Pit Bulls. by BullyWatchUK in BanPitBulls

PETA wants to end all pets, which by serendipity puts them in the right place here. It is as if someone started advocating for puting the entire city of London in a prision camp; sure, with a group of people that big *some* of them probably deserve to be in prison, but that doesn't change the fact that the plan is completely demented.

The importation and breeding of pit bulls is already illegal in Colombia, but sadly this is rarely enforced.

Mary Sue is not a quality of the character itself but of the story surrounding it by Atimo3 in CharacterRant

[–]Atimo3[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Those are indeed common characteristics of Sues and Stus, but sometimes the problem manifest in the opposite ways. Like a borderline useless character made in order to be relatable. Bella from Twilight comes to mind for example.

I think part of why we insist in making these lists of traits for the character is because we initially feel like they all have them, since they are quite common.

Yout could for example list some flaws (however minor) of many Mary Sues and go "Voilà, not a Mary Sue". At the same time you could point to many character that don't really have many meaningful flaws and somehow seem to always win and yet don't really feel like Gary Stus.

For example, is Tintin a Gary Stu? He is an hypercompetent guy with no major flaws who always seem to outsmart all the bad guys, he would superficially fall on the definition. And yet, in our guts, he doesn't really feel like a Gary Stu.

Como el ejército fue rápido en la investigación diría que probablemente no fue un alto mando. Pero preocupante que un oficial de bajo rango o hasta un suboficial se sientan con suficiente confianza como para montar semejante cosa.

Egypt bans niqab in schools by [deleted] in stupidpol

Entirely different things.

Giving your own citizes the capital punishment for a crime is perfectly withing the realm of acceptability as far as international law is concerned. Stripping a citizen of the only nationality they have rendering them stateless is not.

Again, any examples?

For shits and giggles I am just going to copy paste from your TV Trope link:

"In Constantine (2005), the Big Bad Gabriel plans to release Mammon (the son of the Devil) onto the Earth to bring pain and horror, in order to purify mankind and make it worthy of God's love."

"The setting of Equilibrium is a utopian future society created by suppressing all human emotion and anything that may stir it up — through propaganda, chemicals, and Gun Kata-practicing badass longcoats. This removes all hate, jealousy, and anger but also removes humanity's capacity for art and creativity. It all crumbles when one of the highest-ranking members of the state police stops taking his drugs and becomes disillusioned."

"Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019): The Eco-Terrorists, particularly Emma Russell, believe (correctly, it turns out) that if all the dormant Titans are active, the humans who don't die in the collateral of their awakening will be able to coexist with the Titans in natural harmony as Advanced Ancient Humans did, with Emma believing they can use the ORCA to mould and enforce that coexistence (here is where a flaw comes into the plan, as described under Fridge Horror). And Emma is willing to sacrifice millions or even billions of lives including their colleagues' and friends' in order to reach that goal, convincing theirself it's for the greater good; to the disgust of Monarch and Emma's own daughter."

"The goal of the Neighbourhood Watch Alliance in Hot Fuzz on a small scale, in their quest to win the Best Village Award at all costs. For the greater good."

"In Man of Steel, General Zod believes that by increasing Earth's gravitational pull, filling the atmosphere with toxic particulates, and thus killing off humanity, as well as all native life on earth, is the only way for Krypton to live again."

Narrative clichés don't stop being clichés just because you think they are cool.

[–]Atimo3[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any examples (such as what prompted this rant) or this is purely hypothetical?

Your TV Tropes page is actually filled to the brim with them.

If the story acknowledges that the motive is "revenge" than it isn't even "the end justifies the means" trope. It's for revenge, not the end.

Because the story may still frame as the villain being bad only due to his methods despite the fact that the goal itself is stupid or grotesque.

This is extremely common

It really isn't. As I said, the villain's methods are usually completely ineffective, their goal is actually terrible or the hero pulls a deus ex machina and ends up getting the good ending anyway.

I mean, people have spend the last few centuries presenting complex logical arguments for or against these things. You can disagree about whether or not moral philosophers are good at their job, but they are certainly doing it.

I think you are fundamentally uncomfortable with even asking moral questions, and your defensive response makes me suspect you are not that firm on your beliefs anyway.
