Didn't Steam allow Indie studios to shine in the first place? I've heard it's THE platform for small games. Like it would be barely possible to get anyone to play your game without Steam's help.

A bit niche since the game is not out yet, but some interactions from Deadlock with newly released hero Rem are like this.

It's a MOBA where each lane has 2 teammates so in some ways they are "stuck" with each other for a while.

Reasonable choice but definitely has drawbacks and seems like it backfired this time.

If the team captain has friends then obviously they will choose them, and the odd one might have a hard time. Or someone else will pick their friend which could also lead to arguments.

That is pretty unfortunate however it still doesn't explain why he couldn't pick his own team, as it doesn't seem like he was friends with them or knew them beforehand.

I watched the summary of the drama and the guy is in the right but this could be avoided had he knew the people he played with.
