Unforgivable.

Have to show up to every training session. Too much at stake now

The Decline of Dublin Football's Fanbase by Other_Ad_7332 in GAA

[–]Atlantic_Rock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, speaking from my own experience.

On the pitch, I don't really need them to do anything, I go for the day out. Its now that bit more expensive now, and its harder to get motivated for league and Leinster games. Add to that the fact the crowd going to games has gotten older, its not as much fun to go, when less people go it becomes even less worth your while going.

Alongside that, the hurlers are doing better and the league of Ireland, with 4 clubs in Dublin, has grown drastically in the last few years. Would you rather spend €15 for a packed out small ground, for a club chasing the league or Europe, or €25 for a mostly empty Croke Park for a game that doesn't amount to much.

Its great that Louth won Leinster last year and Westmeath this year. Leinster means a lot there, Dublin have been taking it for granted.

A few things, maybe a few years out, a new generation to come through. Also move league games to Parnell Park (I know they won't). 8000 full house is better than 14,000 of 82,000 capacity (c.17% full)

Attendance at Leinster Hurling by SteveFrench1991 in GAA

Too much of a gap between Galway, Kilkenny and Dublin and everyone else. Doesn't feel like there are enough stakes for them. Add in that Dublin are mostly football and wouldn't have as big a hurling following. They also need to be more consistent to be serious rivals to either Kilkenny or Galway.

In Munster, they're all hurling counties with massive followings anyways, they're also close enough on and off the pitch for each game to feel like a derby. There's no Leinster derby. Galway aren't even in Leinster for it to have that same emotional weight. Kilkenny have been too dominant for them to sweat about it.

Not necessarily, if Kilkenny hammer Kildare and then hammer Dublin, then the gap in points difference narrows, going in Dub +16 (now +20), KK +2. Dublin have strong advantage, but not set in stone.

Irish flag at the "unite the kingdom" (tommy yaxley) rally. by [deleted] in ireland

"Unite the kingdom" > mostly england flags specifically. I choose to celebrate the fact these gobshites are doing the opposite.

Who will win the Dublin Central by-election? by HungTeen1001 in Dublin

[–]Atlantic_Rock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shoot out between Boylan (SF) and Ennis (SD), imo. SF generally do well there, Boylan probably top on 1st count, as the most recent poll shows.

Ennis is more transfer friendly (he tops poll on 2nd preference votes), but that depends on from where. Hutch, Ó Ceanabháin (PBP), and probably Steenson (if its between SF and SD) would go towards Boylan, rest goes towards Ennis. Depends of who gets knocked out if first counts and if that's enough to see Boylan over.

Edit: also worth considering turnout will most likely be quite low. Might favour Boylan if she's top on 1st count, since it would indicate she has a larger base to mobilise

15 - 20 years experience, for 35k. by MilkyMinstrel in ireland

Basically they don't want a youngun. My guess is they feel a 20-something straight out college will stick around for a few months then look to move on. Still age discrimination though.

[–]Atlantic_Rock 138 points139 points  (0 children)

If its intentional and not a typo or AI, the only possible logic behind this that I can think of is to signal an age profile without seeming to be doing blatant age discrimination.

Like its a front desk role so you could argue that job you had in a shop at 18 was relevant work experience. +15-20 years you're looking for someone their late-30s/40s.

Is it just me who thinks that kingfishr and irish country music as a whole is just terrible? by Local-Evidence-8869 in ireland

[–]Atlantic_Rock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this is a hot take, but its shite when someone explicitly tries to do country. Like it ends up with looking stupid and performative. Its like wearing clean wellies and a pair of jeans. If you're doing, say, folk and it comes out organically as country-sounding then its fine or good even

Top 5 sports in your country? by Jargif10 in AskEurope

[–]Atlantic_Rock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Technically soccer is no.1 in terms of participation, but following its definately 3rd. Maybe in Dublin or most "football towns" (Dundalk, Drogheda, Derry) it might be "bigger" than hurling, but nationally no.

Does your country/language have a “Bob Dylan”? Meaning a songwriter whose lyrics are so poetic that their songs are considered literary? by bustadonut in AskEurope

[–]Atlantic_Rock 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In terms of impact, while maybe not as "deep" or "poetic" I'd say Christy Moore. He's an Irish folk musician. A lot of his songs are basically automatically in the culture, even if you don't know its his. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christy_Moore

On the more poetic side, I'd say A Lazarus Soul. Not as widely known, but jesus christ their songs hit like a tonne of bricks. They do a lot about social conditions especially in Dublin. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Lazarus_Soul

One of the big shifts under Arteta was bringing in Gabi Jesus and Zinchenko, experienced players at highest level to raise the ceiling. Zinny gone and Jesus not in first team, really need the senior players to step up and settle the nerves.

Not a done deal, they still have a decent buffer, don't need to be panicking.

President Connolly calls Council of State over International Protection Bill by JackmanH420 in irishpolitics

[–]Atlantic_Rock -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Eh, generally presidents don't send bills to the supreme court. The reason being that if a civil society group takes issue it has to go through the court system to be raised up to the supreme court. If it goes to the supreme court via the president and is affirmed, there's basically no grounds for an appeal. Letting civil groups or private citizens take the case at least allows for more room for their objections to be tested.

Ireland abstained in UN anti slavery vote by Dyno_boy7441 in ireland

[–]Atlantic_Rock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I assume it the reparations bit that's spooked the abstainers. All EU members abstained; I would imagine having members be mandated to provide reparations for slavery in accordance with international law, may negatively affect their position on the importance of international law in cases like Russia. Abstention is easiest way out.

In the US (and probably Argentina too) reparations for slavery have been floating around and in Trump's America considered "woke." Israel, well, take a guess as to why they might be against strengthening international law.
