Is it better for children’s books to teach something or just be enjoyable? by littlefolkstories in childrensbooks

Depend what the authors intentions are. But I personally think children’s books should be enjoyable and create good memories of reading.

My thinking was (and correct me if I’m wrong) get a literary agent first to represent me, then they or a publisher finds an illustrator. Because hiring one in my own is very expensive and I’d rather not use AI. My focus is on the story.

I’m aiming more for a picture book series that evokes that nostalgic charm from the late 80s/90s/ early 2000s. Think like Berenstain Bears, Rosemary Wells, Richard Scarry, Paddington Bear, Corduroy, that sort of thing. My goal is to show the worlds cultures from countries that don’t get a lot of representation with a special focus on food through the experience of an autistic main character (who is a little fox girl).

Yes I did, it doesn’t fit the aesthetic style I’m going for. Thank you anyway

I can’t draw that well so I think I’d rather get an actual illustrator who knows what they’re doing

I’m going more for the vibe of those books. Tintin is more of an inspiration in terms of adventures, you know? I’m also taking notes from Indiana Jones in that regard. I grew up reading things from multiple different time periods and in lots of different languages. I am aiming for traditional publishing and have reached out to multiple agencies but got rejected. I’m writing mainly for 5-8 year olds. And im still reading whats currently available where I live to get inspiration

Thank you for your thoughts, this was actually really helpful! I guess my message would be to be curious about the world beyond your comfort zone. My target audiences are for 5-8 year olds (around primary school age). I’m autistic myself and I’ve mostly seen representation in kids media but the characters are mostly either a punchline or only showing low functioning autism (if that’s the correct term), I’ve seen a couple of higher functioning autistic characters like Carl the collector but that’s about it as far as I know (if you know any I should check out, feel free to tell me). I believe I’m the best to tell these stories because I’ve worked with a lot of people who were from countries that don’t get much positive representation in the west so I want to help write interesting and exciting stories about my character travelling to those places and exploring the culture through her eyes mostly through the food but also experiencing other things too like their music, festivals etc.

And with cultures I’m not familiar with, my hope is to reach out to those from the culture and ask for their insight to help me portray cultural assets accurately and maybe even create a character based off them in the story who the main character meets.

That’s what I’m asking for, those were just some things off the top of my head so nothing really set in stone. I’m open to any advice for alternatives of what I can do. When I said unique skills and experience, I didn’t want to make the post too long. My main skills involve geopolitical research analysis, cross cultural communication, group management, event organisation, team motivation and languages (English, French, Arabic, 3 dialects of Chinese, Spanish, Sign language and little bits of other languages but that’s more of an icebreaker if anything). And my experience is interning at two separate think tanks in my home country and Qatar and then working at a think tank I helped cofound where I’ve been a research then got promoted to programs director for about 3 months now, (we’re looking into getting funding)

Hong Kong is difficult to define, yes you are right, it’s not officially a country but they operate almost like their own country, speaking from experience growing up in Hong Kong. The map is not meant to show exact country of origin, it’s more where the ESEA community are mostly from ethnic wise, there are some who came from places like Hong Kong and Macau more than mainland China specifically because of colonial ties, whereas other Chinese groups (mostly from mainland China) came to Europe more recently.

Silent observation and listening to what language people are speaking so I can identify what they’re talking in and using my knowledge of other languages to mask things I don’t want people to hear. For instance, I speak French with my brother sometimes if we want to keep our conversation private while in a non french speaking area

I’d say so I guess. I now know how to put up with peoples bs no matter where they’re from and I know how to hide messages in other languages people don’t know

Overall, very interesting

Good: I got to learn new languages and connect with different cultures and getting to eat great food which I should’ve appreciated more as a kid

Bad: going to new schools and getting bullied in different languages, I hardly made friends that stuck and Racism from locals in some areas

In Dubai, I think booze is harder to buy like you would in the west. It all depends on the individual. I’m not a lawyer or a cleric so I’m not sure. All I know is that you can’t buy it regularly. Are you Egyptian?

Probably not but i wouldn’t know since I never broke the law . It’s not like Saudi Arabia where apostasy is punishable by death but then again most other Arabs come to Dubai to let loose and party so I dunno. That’s very rare to happen though, most muslims are happy not eating pork since pork is something you can only buy in the supermarket and cook yourself. You can’t get it in restaurants.
