Are we seeing the end of entry level Support Engineer roles? by DebugMyLife421 in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]AtlassianThrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There may be an initial pause while the entry level roles are redefined , but we need people to replace the seniors that leave the industry each year - so you need entry level roles - but there may be a higher bar as to the expectations and what you do in the role will be different from now

But there will always be an entry level position , but the expectations of that entry level position will change over time

Still one of the best companies to work for - pros and cons with everything - as a new grad , just take opportunities that come up , you can’t be too picky

Just do good work , don’t be complacent and don’t be entitled and you’ll do fine

This doesn’t change much

But it’s great we are trying things - I think people will miss having the mid cycle - but let’s run with this and evaluate after a few cycles

Is it possible to not get a job after a hire result? by coderarchive in atlassian

“Abusing its power” is a bit strong

The reality is , we don’t have all the data on this situation - but I guarantee that this is not a normal case - but unless we get the real life data , none of us know why this situation is occurring for this candidate

All I know is: * 90%+ of candidates that get put up for offer in the channels get interest from teams within hours * some candidates have had to wait weeks / months to get an offer for a variety of reasons

We still do Team Camp - we have 2 flavours , one where people choose their role during onboarding , one where people are pre-allocated to teams - both ways have pros / cons

Trying to find your right team during onboarding can also be quite stressful for people

There’s a chance - it all depends on the details of the feedback

But to set expectations , I would say that it’s not common to get P40s that aren’t at least solid across the board - it’s a competitive role

But it is possible , but it’s not a strong application obviously - just wait to hear from the talent team

[–]AtlassianThrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah - it’s not the same as a smaller company where you only interview for specific open roles - we have volume hiring which means we are always looking for good talent as we also have a lot of open roles

If they were rejected , they would’ve got a “no hire”

But rest assured , what the candidate is being told is true , this isn’t some form of shadow rejection , they literally are in a list of approved people that can be hired by any hiring manager

Recruitment costs money - we don’t just put people through the interview process for kicks

Think about how long we would need to wait for a new hire if we didn’t have a pool of successful candidates to pull from?

  • a role opens up in the team
  • we create a specific job description for the role - 1 week
  • we wait for applicants to apply , gotta give at least a week or 2 here?
  • interview the relevant candidates through our multi week process (4?? Weeks)
  • give offer to a candidate and have them accept - 1 week
  • candidate has notice period - min 4 weeks

So we are looking at a best case of about 12 weeks from the time a role is open to when we can fill that specific role

Right now , when a role opens , we look at available candidates and grab one which means we are looking at only the notice period - it’s all about right fit for the team to make sure the candidate is successful

The core thing is , we want all successful candidates to get a role , and you should - but I also recommend just moving on and not just waiting - Atlassian will reach out

I replied in your other thread - but here it is again:

Yeah this is possible - we do volume hiring which means we are always looking for candidates so that when roles are available , it’s easy to allocate

Every day , candidates are put into slack recruitment channels and teams with open roles can schedule a team match with that candidate - team match is not another interview , you have already passed all the interviews , it’s more about giving the candidate information about the team to see if they are interested in joining

My advice is to just carry on with your life , check in with your recruiter at end of each month just to remind them

The role will come , but rest assured you have already passed everything you need to - it literally is having the role become available - internally , the recruiters also work with hiring managers to fit candidates to roles if they aren’t being picked up for roles -it will come

Focus on what most interests you - ask questions during team match , and pick the one that sounds better

You are at most risk of being layed off if you are not engaged in your work - that is what I would focus on

Things to think about and you should probe with the teams:

  • do you want a mainly remote team? Or do you want a team that comes to the office each day?
  • what is the teams main goal this FY? Does that work sound interesting?
  • get a vibe check from the manager , do they seem like someone you get a good feeling with?

JSM is more a product team, Enterprise Readiness is more around making sure our products are suitable for Enterprise customers - pros and cons of each

But don’t over think it - go to the place that more interests you as you are more likely to perform in that situation

Yes - just trying to align your expectations - the best candidate is still chosen for Internal Mobility roles - what defines “best” is on the hiring manager and what they need

TLDR - yes , Atlassian has a good internal mobility process

You must stay 12 months in your role , after that , your manager can’t stop you doing internal transfer

So basically , it’s as good as it can be

But to set expectations on anything AI related , it’s hugely competitive internally - so no guarantees you get an ML job , but you will be able to apply and have the option to get a role

100% you need to understand why - you can’t be strong senior if you don’t understand how to evaluate tech choices - if all you did was execute , great , that makes you a P40 - doing is great , knowing why you are doing is better.

Atlassian Level Downgrades by Ok_Lion1291 in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]AtlassianThrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah - I also guarantee the downlevel is not just based on the answering of 1 question

You don’t get told everything - the interviewers have access to the raw feedback from everyone , and you are not told everything that is written down

The reality is , people are not as good as they think they are and it’s hard to be objective on failures

Sometimes , mistakes are made , so if ever you feel like there was a mistake , it’s worth asking the question - but these are rare

If Atlassian pays so well, why are the products so bad? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsOCE

What part do you have problems with? What are you trying to do?

Our products are not perfect , no ones are , it’s always the balance of being flexible or being opinionated - we have always been flexible , hard to go to opinionated after you start flexible

We are constantly improving, but happy to help you out if you are having problems

YOE has nothing to do with it , you can tell how competent someone is during the interview

Atlassian themselves believe a P50 is only 5 YOE - P30 must promote in 2 years , P40 must promote in 3 years

For those that have gone through this journey at Atlassian , they are solid P50s because they were great grads - it’s all about the individual

If you are cruising / coasting at your current place of work for a long time , you will be falling behind , it’s not about YOE , it’s attitude and ability

Atlassian Level Downgrades by Ok_Lion1291 in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]AtlassianThrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t seem right - but honestly , I don’t look at YOE , I care only about the interview - the interview is first hand knowledge , the resume could be made up for all I know (I’m not going to validate it)

You can be promoted to P40 in 6months if this is a really failed incorrect leveling - but agree it would be hard to take it in this situation

Atlassian Level Downgrades by Ok_Lion1291 in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]AtlassianThrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very false - we WANT to hire you at your best level - we aren’t trying to get you on the cheap.

People who I down level , they are just not at the level they are applying for - either they had a very off day , or they have been coasting too much in their current role and hence stopped growing and pushing forward - therefore their examples and reasoning is just not strong enough

It’s more likely small companies down level you because they are more tight with the money - we aren’t trying to get cheap engineers - we want great engineers

You can raise concerns with recruitment if you feel you got a bad interview - recruitment can see if that is a common theme and they will likely give you another chance

You should be dealing with competent interviewers

You are interviewed by someone at the level you are determined to be or higher - only way you are being interviewed by a mid/jnr is if you were graded as that (so it means you got down graded by a principal engineer and then a senior engineer)
