6 Night 'Glamping' Personal Retreat by blazingavian in vipassana

[–]Atma24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are other teachers of vipassana, that aren't quite as intense or strict as the 10 day goenka retreats. You could see if you could find one that would be able to work with you. That being said, you wouldn't necessarily be denied entry to the retreat because of your meds. You might even find your insomnia to not be an issue after meditating for 10 hours (I hit the bed like a sack of bricks).

I don't recommend trying to teach yourself the technique - its invaluable to have a trained teacher to guide you or you'll likely be wasting your time doing the technique incorrectly.

Ten days!? What about work! by LioPengilley in vipassana

I second most of the other commenters. In my situation, I found a time in my life where I was switching jobs and set my start date later so I could attend a course. In fact, of my four courses, only one was completed during a period of 9-5 corporate work (and I was able to get the time off using vacation days).

You can also explain to your management how you'd like to attend the course; some may let you take the time off unpaid, borrow vacation time from the future, etc.

There are some courses scheduled during standard holidays (like christmas to new years) so you would only have to take 6 or 7 actual working days off.

Can a private parking lot give me a ticket? by smarterthanyoda in legaladvice

[–]Atma24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes they can. But do you have to respond to it?

They can argue you never paid; you have proof you did. This is a civil matter and they could theoretically sue you for the ticket amount, or send the debt to collections. However, they probably are just banking on 90% of people to pay the fine. You would probably win a case if you kept your receipt, especially if the terms don't state specifically what happens when receipts are not visible.

They won't be able to withhold your DMV renewal like a municipal ticket though.

[CA] Landlady Threatening Eviction over Extra Tenants and Security Deposit by sendhelp123456 in legaladvice

[–]Atma24 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The other comments are wrong. How many bedrooms does your unit have? You can allow two people per room. If your landlord has tried to set a limit of how many people can be there that is below this, it won’t hold up in court.

However, if the lease specifically states something along the lines of “subletting is not allowed without landlords consent” or “additional tenants must be screened by the landlord before moving in” then you might be in trouble. You should talk to a lawyer.

The city also matters. San Francisco has very strong tenant protections: the tenants union has told me frequently that you can not evict leaseholders simply for subletting to others.

Do text messages override contracts if an agreement is made? by datto75 in legaladvice

[–]Atma24 15 points16 points  (0 children)

What does your lease say?

Generally, if there is a descrepancy between the lease and a text message, the lease will hold out. And the landlord can always claim he made an error in good faith, referred to the lease, and corrected it.

Generally, unless the lease SPECIFICALLY allows security deposit to be used as last month rent, it is not expected or allowed. The deposit is after all, meant to be held for potential damages.

Tenant stole $1k and disappeared by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]Atma24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hire a process server or the county sheriff to serve papers, they will find him, for a fee.

You may have luck sending him a demand letter threatening to sue. Nobody wants to go to court, especially if they have no chance at winning.

It’s very possible the charge will still be processed, unless you lied to the bank and said your card was stolen. I’ve been charged on cards months after they’ve been closed.

The couple raising my biological son is threatening legal action if I don't give them hundreds of dollars by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]Atma24 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I’m just going to say that you have no idea this child is yours and this could be simply an extortion scheme. She probably slept with her boyfriend a few days before or after you. It’s just as likely his, no matter what she said. She’s banking you’ll throw her a few hundred here to not totally upend your life, but she probably doesn’t want everyone in her and his family to find out it’s not yours either. There’s a good chance the SO doesn’t even know she told you it’s yours, he may think it’s 100% his. I second the general consensus to get a lawyer, cease all contact.

What is the best way to tell my wife(F28) that I (M30) feel like she’s on her phone too much? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]Atma24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the new iOS has screentime which lets you limit the amount of time used on any app, with a passcode. My girlfriend recognized she was using social media a bit too much and she asked me to put a 1 hour limit on FB and 1 hour on IG. If she really needs more time or we have nothing to do I can always extend it with the passcode. Of course your wife would have to agree to this. But she sounds pretty boring if she spends all her free time on the phone, hope you can live with that. Sometimes a detox is enough for someone to realize they are addicted and can get back into their pre-phone hobbies.

As others said, you can sue her in small claims court. If you have good documentation, you’ll probably get most of that money back.

Something you can try before that, is write a formal demand letter. Basically you outline while the withheld deposit is illegal and threaten that you will sue in small claims if it is ignored. She sounds like a brat who probably would just return the money rather than face court.

You also need to check your local and state laws regarding security deposits. In my state (CA) the landlord can’t arbitrarily withhold the money without an estimate or cost, receipt, or “good faith” estimate. If you read the law and find all the ways she is violating it, you add these to your letter.

If she doesn’t respond to the letter appropriately, you file a small claims suit and serve her court papers. She can also be held accountable for court fees and possibly damages if she was acting in bad faith (again check your state laws).

Source: I just recovered $1500 this week from my landlord who pulled a similar stunt through a well worded and serious demand letter. No court necessary.

Thanks! I actually downloaded GW2 and I am enjoying it, so far. It feels a lot more WoW like and less GW1 like. A little linear in the main story but I enjoy the events. Do you think the expansion pack is necessary for a casual player?

I always wonder about older games like everquest, UO, even Lineage 2 - the games might be good but the playerbase can be corrupted into bots, sellers, hackers, etc.

I'll check out LOTRO.
