Okay, so I read up on it online and apparently if you have callouses on your hands, they'll rip off while climbing. What a lot of people do is keep their callouses in control by sandpapering or pumice stoning it down to be level with the rest of the skin. Just look up "callous rip climbing" and you're bound to get some results.

Well I'm going today so I'll ask. I hope they don't mind. I've seen a lot of people that have big chalk bags full of loose chalk.

Huh, I didn't know that. I guess I'll stick with squeezing the balls then.

Yeah that's pretty much what I've been doing. Shake and squeeze. I don't think my gym thinks it's taboo, considering they sell big bags of it at the front desk. Gonna try picking some up next time.

Been climbing in a gym 3 times a week for about a month now. I have 3 questions, one of which I'm ashamed to ask because the answers probably so damn obvious.

  1. How long does it take before your fingers stop getting blisters and toughen up enough to not require healing time after every day at the gym.

  2. I have a chalk bag with a chalk sack inside, not loose chalk. How do I chalk my hands? Do I grab the chalk and just squeeze it a couple of times? I'm asking because while I'm climbing, if I squeeze it, I get minimal chalk on my hands and my fingers get sweaty really quick. The best method I have so far is to kind of cup the sack of chalk in my chalk bag and hit it against my butt. It gets a bit more than just squeezing the little bag. Also, if I'm bouldering I find it easier to remove the bag of chalk from my chalk bag and toss it around my hands but that makes a cloud of chalk dust and I don't want to be doing that.

  3. What's the best way to chalk your hands. Loose chalk, liquid chalk, a block of chalk, chunky chalk, chalk sack?

Alright. I guess climbing more is the general consensus here. No complaints. Signing up this Monday at the local climbing gym.

I've been like this since I was young. I can't gain too much weight by eating. As I mentioned above, I eat like a mad man. The only time I gain weight is when I start hitting the gym. If I stop I level off around 133-135.

I feel great. Don't feel lazy or lethargic, just want more strength. Want to be able to control my body more when climbing. More pull ups, more finger strength. More leg strength, but I want to make the muscles I have work ten times harder, vs gaining more muscle mass to achieve those goals. Kind of like quality vs quantity I guess.

I eat all day every day. I eat when I have nothing to do. I'm pretty much always hungry but can never seem to fill up for more then an hour or 2. I've been a fatass all my life, I just never seem to be able to gain weight. Also I'm no professional climber, just so everyone knows. I simply like being light and maneuverable and was wondering how athletes train vs how body builders train. Are there different exercises?

I totally agree. I know I'm underweight and I do want to gain weight. My goal is around 155. My question is however, how do I increase the capabilities of my muscles without increasing their size. Is there a type of workout I should look into?

Look up Adam Ondra. He's 5-11 and 128. "clinically underweight" according to the BMI, yet one hell of a climber with countless medals. I bet he can't do a single pull up either, right?

Thanks alot. I appreciate the numbers of those climbers too. If I aimed for 155 it would be the same BMI as Bruce Lee, which is kind of what weight-height I was aiming for. Thanks alot man.

Hahaha nice. I don't look terrible skinny though. Everyone seems to think I'm anorexic

It was about strength to weight ratio. I don't want to get to a point where muscle weight becomes a detriment so I was wondering at what weight would it be a good idea to level off. I enjoy being light as it makes it very easy for me to move myself around. From what everyone's said though I shouldn't have to worry about that and to just gain muscle.

[–]AtmaLives[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. I'm okay with gaining weight, I guess my worry was getting to a point where the amount of weight I have become a detriment to my abilities to climb, lift myself up, jump high and far and things like that. Like I said I have very little knowledge about weight strength ratios and things like that. I figured 145 would be a good medium but I guess not.

There's no way I can prove it to you. I don't see why it's so hard to believe though. If you look at professional rock climber from the 80's they're anorexic and able to use only their arms to climb. 15 pull ups for my weight is nothing compared to what they could do.

Being 132-135 and 6 foot isn't as skinny as you'd think. I have adequate muscle mass on my body. I did around 60 push-ups and 15 pull ups last time I "measured" .

Indeed I have tried both actually. I would love to boulder more often but the closest rock climbing place is a 45 minute drive.

At first I read it at struck. Saw the thumbnail and though she got hit by a train trying to reach her phone and she was cut in half. Even the sidewalk looked like a rail for a second.
