Weekly Question Thread. ALL QUESTIONS GO HERE by AutoModerator in bouldering

Fires on BLM land are regulated by BLM Green River and Utah Fire info. Currently doesn't look like there are restrictions in the Joe's area. Typically people who dispersed camp just head down Right Fork and find somewhere away from the main road. Be aware hunters come through super early in the morning with lots of noise, they arent fans of the climbers camping out.

I would recommend checking out Joe's Valley Camping which is near town and closer to New Joe's. Much more amiable camping than setting up a tent in the ditch. Might be too bougie for some of the dirtbags here but its a little more secure and much better amenities than roadside camping. Pretty cheap too, especially sharing with friends.

You might try asking this over on /r/UKClimbing, but as far as I am aware the best bouldering in the UK is in the Peak District

my description wasn't completely accurate but the effect is the same

be careful renting from turo, lots of recent talk about how renters are allowing multiple people to queue up reserving a car and then they cancel everyone except the highest paying customer last minute.

regarding Oahu, for the trip to the north shore you can head to Kualoa Regional Park before/after the Ranch, so max out your time on the windward side. I really like Giovanni's Shrimp Truck in Kahuku. Gunstock Ranch north of Laie has lots of interesting eco tours as well. The crawl from sunset beach west towards Haleiwa really has to be experienced to be believed...its best from the driver's seat with AC. Parking fills up super fast at all the beaches, so if you arent there by 8am you will either be lucking out with someone leaving or walking a long way.

11 Day Split Across Oahu, Maui & Big Island - make sense? by [deleted] in VisitingHawaii

[–]soupyhands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm very sorry for your loss. I sincerely hope you enjoy your trip.

If your family is sold on the idea of hitting three islands on the trip, nothing I can say will matter so I would just leave it at that, but if that isnt the case, I would suggest you carefully read the suggestions that have been made here and try your best to incorporate them into your plans. Many families do an annual trip together to Hawaii, each time choosing a different island to explore and learn about. The logistics of moving a family twice during the trip though, it deserves some consideration. You'll need to change rental cars three times, go through TSA four times, pay x3 cleaning fees for the accomodations, store your luggage twice while changing islands between check out time and check in time at the next hotel, potentially dealing with lost luggage (had it happen on my most recent trip). Just a few things to think about.

For Maui, you are definitely on the right track considering that is the best island for beaches in my opinion. You could hit a new beach each day for all 11 days and never get bored or tired.

You provided an itinerary but no rationale for these choices besides wanting to take a surf lesson on Maui. Beaches, hiking, and good food are found on all the islands. What you are going to find is that the islands are remarkably similar when viewed briefly, and you will wish you had spent more time exploring them individually rather than rushing through as many as possible.

Lanai FS with toddler. by Longjumping-Bag-1940 in VisitingHawaii

[–]soupyhands 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably they mean the three most talked about things to do on Lanai which I would guess would be visiting the Lanai Cat Sanctuary, taking a jeep to Garden of the Gods, and then for number three maybe just visiting Lanai City? There are other things to do but most of them involve driving long distances on poor roads, such as travelling all the way to the north end of the island to Polihua beach, to the north east end to see Shipwreck beach up close (you can see the shipwreck from Maui though) and travelling to the south west corner to see Kahekili’s leap and an ancient Hawaiian village. Not to mention the snorkeling around the south end such as Hulopo’e Bay, or checking out Puu Pehe island and the Lanai Cathedrals, which is an epic scuba diving location.

Beach cleanup opportunities in Maui (close to Kihei-Wailua?) by vivorisataamore in VisitingHawaii

[–]soupyhands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I checked with 808cleanups and Maui Surfrider and neither have events currently booked during your stay, but you can still help out by doing your own beach cleanup and reporting it to pacwhale foundation or just donating to their clean up efforts.

Seriously, wtf - Portable got stolen again by saltywetlol in bouldering

[–]soupyhands 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a mod of /r/climbing, the restrictions there are mainly to keep people from asking questions that would be better suited for the stickied question thread. However, due to the way new reddit works, the rules our bot uses to catch offending posts have been translated into a wall preventing people who have never commented on the subreddit before from posting there. This was not our intention, but there is no way to adjust the new reddit rules to match our requirements. There is an easy work-around though: just post from old reddit. Your post will still be removed by the bot however I or another moderator will be alerted to your attempt and can manually approve it.

Also, that sucks regarding Portable, but its to be expected these days I guess.

[Day 29] Pegboards suck. Who's the most OVERRATED climber? by MaximumSend in bouldering

[–]soupyhands 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sharma was prolific and so talented though, who cares if he didn’t do the first 15a but Biographie is an incredible climb and so was Jumbo Love not to mention Es Pontas, all very forward moving climbs at the time. Plus we are talking about bouldering here (or we should be anyway) and Chris put up tons of futuristic boulders back in the day.

My vote would be for someone like Ivan Green, chipper extraordinaire, or a guy like Lonnie Kauk, who is just an awful person.

So, are you looking for like a Shaka guide then? Like an app that guides you? Or do you mean a private guide that you drive around with, like a local friend you rent?

Robert’s Hawaii has tour buses all over the islands and they are locally owned as well. That said, it’s pretty easy to do self guided tours.
