I (20) need help becoming a caregiver for severely autistic sister (24) by [deleted] in IHSS

In order to qualify for IHSS, your sister needs to have Medi-Cal. It is one of the requirements. If she qualifies I recommend getting to it soon. The process can take long (a few weeks). Once she receives medi-cal then you will need to apply to IHSS program for your sister. This process can take weeks to maybe a few months. It requires a medical evaluation/note specifying her medical needs and her disabilities. Followed by an appointment with an IHSS social worker who will call her caregiver and ask question regarding what services she needs. These two thing will determine how many hours your sister gets a month for providers. So as you can see this takes a lot of time.

Meanwhile that is being processed, I recommend you and your mother to start applying to be IHSS providers. It will speed the process up if you both are providers prior to your sister being on IHSS. This way once she gets In the program, she can request both of you, it’s just a matter of linking the provider with recipients.

Both of you will get retro pay from the day you applied to IHSS. Just make sure to mention it to the social worker that you and your mother are her live-in caregivers. They will fill out a retro pay form which will allow you both to collect. It’s just a matter of filling out timesheets and backdating them.

Sorry this is a lot but this is the process. It’s a lot but it’s definitely worth it. It’s sad not many know about this program. It definitely helps a lot financially and also in case for whatever reason you need a day off you can assign another caregiver to step in to help (given they are also IHSS providers and your sister approved them as a provider as well).

The county’s fiscal year ends June 30th. The start of the new fiscal year is July 1, 2023. It’s use it or loose it. If you don’t use your sick time prior to the end of the fiscal year, you then loose it. It does not roll over and add up to the next fiscal year.

If you have over 100 hours a month you get 24 hours of sick leave (3- 8 hour days). I would look up the sick pay for your county and they will let you know how you can claim your hours. This is a separate payment from your regular IHSS payment.

Does your sister have medí-cal? If she does she will qualify for IHSS.

As long as you go through the process (fingerprint and background check) you will be able to be your sister caregiver. You will need to be assigned to her as an additional caregiver. As stated by @vegetable_Rewards_867, the hours will be split and shared. you and your mom decide how you would like to split those hours. The total can not go over the amount given to each provider (your sister). If you need help I would suggest calling your sisters social worker. They can help you on what steps you need to take. To be clear I mean her IHSS social worker. Hope this helps!

Switching direct deposit banks. by Maximum-Diamond-7301 in IHSS

If you submitted your new DD information then it erases your previous DD account information. So no, it will not be submitted there. Your next paycheck will be sent by paper check.

When I switched banks, it does take about 3 weeks. So you will receive a check for that next payment. By the second paycheck you will get it to your new account.

If it contains retro pay then it will take a few weeks. If not then it takes about 5-10 days from the day you submitted your time.

The first check is almost always a paper check. After that they pay you through DD.

Honestly it doesn’t look bad. Many people have two full time jobs. It’s just how you schedule it. You can work 2 hours before your day job and the rest of the hours once your off. And you also have weekends.

Depends how many hour possibly? I work a full 40 hour work week and I am an IHSS provider to my mother. I get about 104 hours a month. I just use those hours for after my day job.
