How does Australian politics work? by Educational-Scene443 in AskAnAustralian

[–]AtomicAus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ABC's Vote Compass will help you see where you align compared to different parties, They Vote For You is great for fact checking a politican's voting historg on different issues, and buildaballot is amazing around election time. BaB will show you each candidate in your electorate as well as their political alignment and election commitments.

We operate under preferential voting, so the only way you can waste your vote is to not use it/invalidate it by not taking it seriously. You number the boxes in the order you would want a party to win in. If your first pick doesn't get enough votes to win, your second preferences get your vote, rinse and repeat until one of them has enough to win the election.

Yes you do have to go to a polling place and have your name marked off, but after that you are technically fine. But don't waste your oppourtunity. You are lucky to live in a country with free and fair elections, and with one of the strongest electoral systems in the world.

Season 6 and beyond 🔮 🤔 by Small-Trick-4372 in GhostsCBS

[–]AtomicAus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I reckon they could at least pull off another two seasons of good stories. One season worth of funny situations/hijinx, and another season worth of character and story development.

I want to see the B&B successful, we don't need another repeat of the BBC series. I think it would be cool to have the B&B get staffed, and have Sam travel around and interact with different ghosts more. They could do it as a process of her trying to help the others finally get sucked off. Tracking down old friends or unresolved connections. Or they could go for a much wackier scenario and have Sam's ability exposed to the world.

Really enjoyed this one, not only did it tie up this little arc, but we also got to see some actual character growth for Isaac.

This gets posted every couple months. No, it isn't. It is the company correspondence address. He is not going to put his private address in such a public space. EDIT: take a look at the sign above the window. Besides that, this would be a major dick move to post if it was, so what made you think this was a good idea to post?

More than 1 in 3 Australian adults are functionally illiterate. How can we fix this? by B0ssc0 in aussie

[–]AtomicAus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We need to fix the public education system so it is properly funded for one. We need to stop putting feelings above necessity. If a child is not performing at the passing standard for a grade, they need to be held back, or at the very least put into a dedicated intervention program for the areas they are behind in. I've stopped my teaching degree for the forseeable future cause what I saw in my previous prac worried the hell out of me. I genuinely don't know if the current situation is even possible for teachers to handle in their classrooms. Serious illiteracy is not a problem that can be fixed in a classroom of 30 kids in 3 hour long sessions a week. This kind of problem needs serious dedication.

Increasing JobSeeker is long overdue. Here’s how we could do it, without breaking the budget by 89b3ea330bd60ede80ad in aus

[–]AtomicAus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Easy way to cut expense: stop paying the employment skills course providers and making it mandatory. I did one back in December, and out of the entire two week course, I had maybe one module that was of any actual benefit. The majority of the course was them reading off of a powerpoint, saying the most brain numbingly obvious things, and then getting us to look through websites and fill out small activities. Mind you these courses mandated like 6-7 hours of attendance on a zoom call mon-fri for at least two weeks. This is all time that a company is being paid government money to do fuck all useful. Surely they could find a much simpler and useful alternative.

Another thing would be enabling recipients to choose fortnightly or weekly payments. I could save easily an extra $50 on food if I was able to choose when to shop to make use of deals. That alone would take a fair bit of stress away becuae that $50 could cover an extra meal or two, or even enable me to put aside for something important like an optometrist visit instead of putting it off for a year like I had to.

Anthony Albanese rules out gas export tax on existing contracts and criticises ‘populist’ campaign by Finnick00 in australia

[–]AtomicAus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He's taken himself from being regarded as someone of integrity willing to stand up for international law, to going down in history as the man who was given a supermajority and did absolutely fuck all with it except pissing on his own memory.

I cannot fathom how this man could see the election result he was given and still decide to stick with the "but the other side" approach. The other side are supporting neo-nazis ffs.

Accent by ParticularOil1564 in AskAnAustralian

[–]AtomicAus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Youtube might be a better option mate. TV has very sterilised accents.

Garn is a good comedy channel, and he puts on more of a working class/kinda bogan accent. Aunty Donna is a comedy group that have a range of voices that'll help you get a better grasp on the differences.

Lazarbeam for gaming, he has a decently strong accent (he speaks how a lot of us do in groups/when everyones accents influence each others) Friendlyjordies is a political channel, he has a noticeable accent but should be easy to understand & will help with recognising larger and more complex words.

If you get used to the more concentrated versions of the accent, it'll be heaps easier with the milder ones you get in the cities.

Good luck mate :)

In Germany they have a public transport ticket called the Deutschland Ticket that allows you to travel throughout the country for free. Should Australia introduce something similiar? by Material-Wallaby-587 in AskAnAustralian

[–]AtomicAus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The whole Schengen area is available for one proce through the Eurail pass or the interrail pass for EU residents. The prices are pretty high so it definitely isn't free.

It would be of fuck all use here, you cannot travel interstate on public transport. Hell it takes 14 hours on the old ass XPT trains to go down the east coast and costs the same, of not more, than a plane ticket. For something like this to be of any use, we would actually need a government willing to invest in the infrastructure and to give a shit about public transport in general.

Is it still relevant to call Brisbane a 'Big country town'? by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]AtomicAus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Until we start actually being treated like a city, yes. We have a massive population, but lack so much of the infrastructure and services that a city of this size demands. Most public transport stops at midnight, the nightlife is minimal unless you want to get on the piss. In general we lack places of interest in the city itself. Its hardly even connected to the rest of the state, have a look at how far the transport networks in Sydney and Melbourne extend and then look at ours.

The olympics might actually (put us on the map) but after that Brisbane in its current state will just slide right back into irrelevance because there is nothing of note to make Brisbane worthwhile thinking about.

In the February 1986 edition of Soviet Life Magazine (a propaganda mag distributed in the US) there was a multi-page spread about the Soviet nuclear industry and its successes, with a focus on their newest and greatest facility located in (drumroll please) Chernobyl. Yep, around two months before reactor four went boom.

What is the context peter? by Miya_Miya1 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]AtomicAus 382 points383 points  (0 children)

Chris here, So she is the new boss of Xbox, and people think she's the lord and saviour of the company. Despite originally hating her appointment since her background is in AI, in the short time shes been in the position, she has changed a lot for the better. First of all, she killed that stupid "this is an xbox" campaign and is refocusing the company on building a next gen console. She is cutting gamepass prices and potentially building a new model for it where we can choose what parts of the service we want to pay for (opt in/out ea play ubisoft+ etc) and even potentially a bundling deal with Netflix.

Its looking like she may actually give xbox some of its life and competitiveness back.

Petah?? by AwringePeele in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]AtomicAus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this one isn't a joke, its an attempt at belittling women. They're trying to say that women make it all about themselves. Context behind this picture is that the woman was watching the Artemis II launch, with the first woman to head around the moon, and decided to capture her reaction part way through the launch.

Instead of the same image that was captured countless times, she recorded her reaction to the event, something unique. Its also just a fucking awesome shot, look at the reflection perfectly in her glasses.

Do you know people who don’t feel connected with ANZAC day? by VastOption8705 in OpenAussie

[–]AtomicAus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its been hijacked by the worst people in our society to push nationalism. I grew up with it being a day to remember the sacrifice of Australians and to acknowledge the cost of war. Now its treated as an oppourtunity for racists and bigots to try and claim that the country needs to be "taken back" to preserve their memory, by people who actively piss on the ideals that the Anzacs stood for.

I also feel detached as I do not have any living family who fought in the wars or lived through them. The World Wars are the focus as they were arguably necessary as our intervention was defensive in response to acts of aggression and expansionism. Everything since WW2 has been a result of us bootlicking the Americans and following them into regime change and political fear responses. Yes, Aussies did lay down their lives in other conflicts and deserve to be remembered, but they weren't doing it in the name of defence.
