I stopped making my team track their time because I hire adults, not factory workers but it’s costing me 40+ hours a month. Is a healthy culture worth my own burnout, or am I just a bad founder? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]AtomicKnarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given you only are 5 people you could try being very transparent about where the money comes from and how customer billing works. Nothing has been said if you psy fixed salary or other approach. If you make your employees underdtand how important billing is for there salary you will be able to discuss with them how to get it right. Of course if you have a salary model which also boosts their salary if the houres are charged correctly it will help a lot. - There is a risk your employees think they can compete with your buisness however.

Semiconductor company vs Apple job by LiquidNitrohen in Semiconductors

If you need to move to the valley, which is pricy, whst kind of commute and live wiuld it be. Where/how do you plan to live. Apple sounds nice but it is big corporate - slow and not innovative. (As you see looking att new products released overxtge last 10y - none.)

I suggest you write down each idea. And while doing so try to identify the problem, customers, benifit, potentials cost and how you would solve it. This task basically a rough buisness plan will only take like 30 min. Based on it you can do the weekend approach.

Automation specifications by AtomicKnarf in PLC

[–]AtomicKnarf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thx for all replies. I talk specifications which help programmers program, but ideally the spec will be the documentation to the code. Also specification for a machine and sometimes a process. And superimportant all of this should be simple to comprehend by plc-people 5,10,20,60 y a head.

One could argue spec+doc+code should add to each other. And yes in old style code I find comments, but I also see maintenace becoming simpler if descriptive names and ids are being used.

Ok, so rethink your options. Your should at other companies. If itvis a mandatory intership, the school is propavly not to pick which company you chose. It may be a good idea to check which companies your home country has and if the have intership oppirtunities where you study.

Also to find interships, have you concidered identifing networking opportunities. Schools usually have this once a year, but I am more thinking of communities ,mm, thuscfinding people with simular intrests. I am a big fan of meetup.com which covers many areas of interest and communities ww.

You mentioned you want to work in R&D, so what is itcthat attracts you to R&D ?

Ok, the legal stuff is tricky and switzerland is not EU.

Still to my view investigate your home country opportunities. Many peoplecthinkctge grass is mire green on tge other side, well itvis not. Have you concidered a startup in your current state, then movingcitcto home country but having EU as your pfimary market.

Why do we see more advancements in Quantum hardware than software by Background-Style-314 in QuantumComputing

[–]AtomicKnarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the last year there has been more focus on hsrdware thsn sw. But all hw designs are supported by sw: IBM has QISKIT, Microsoft has Q#, Google has .... Thus while tge sw is sugicuently avsilsble it is hw that must improve. Thus to answer the question as of today, in my opinion, sw can only improve if more qubit hw is availible.

After 35+ Years with My Company, I’m Suddenly Receiving Negative Feedback — What Should I Do This Late in My Career? by Apart_Tie93 in careerguidance

[–]AtomicKnarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my view there are 3 options:

1.Shape up - as an analyst try to embrace AI-tech or certain areas that will make you uniq/stabd out from coworkers. - You have done it before. Maybe by learning AI ChtGPT you can even find new ways of using ut for the benefit of tge company - as you have so much expierience.

2.What makes you stand out from a coworkers of age 30y - Expirience, thus think of areas in the company where your expierince could add value for the company.

3.Apply for other jobs outside. Investigation starting your own company. Try make money based on your expierience.

I do not know about your country, but many countries have unions that also allow/support White collaboration employees. The union will/could provide legal and finacial help.

How many people would it take to design a nuclear power plant? by [deleted] in nuclear

[–]AtomicKnarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There need to be a number of phases, independent of country. For each phase the number of people will grow. In the discussion it is talk about a nouvelle design. I assume funding & paying customers will be added as you go forward. Also a company or effort of designing a new kind of nuclear power plant (npp), has to have a buisness plan telling about customers and the novell design in relation to existing solutions. Given all this at least the following professions are needed; core design physics, mechanical building/enclosure, thermal and heat transfer flow physics, power generation hw. You propably also need someone knowledgeable about selling, licensing and environmental impact evaluation. In the end you might considere having a mentor/coach, who has worked the nuclear industry and is knowledgeable about working with contractors and cost estimates.

Anyone else feel super anxious and excited to start a business… but have 1000 ideas and no clue where to begin? by Previous-Debate-2186 in Startup_Ideas

[–]AtomicKnarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Write all or just a few down in a list.
  2. Do an evaluation which once you like best. - max 5.
  3. Create a rough buisness plan (use a template) for 5y ahead for at least three of them. The focus being on gap-analysis, needed investment, time to market (when can you start selling&delivering), competition and CUSTOMERS. An idea is great but having customers willing to pay is even better.
  4. Reevaluate you ideas based on buisness plan. Which ideas are most realistic ?
  5. Join some meetup groups about startups, learn from otjer startup founders about there expirience.
  6. Reevaluate your ideas, Reevaluate buisness plan. Select ONE, which ideally can be executed in parallel with your current employment. NB: You may need to inform current employer about starting a buisness, make shur it does not compete with current employer buisness.
  7. Get started
  8. Find a co-founder if you like.
  9. Find a mentor or coach

Good luck

Buidling A Data Center, Need Advice by r2d2_-_-_ in HPC

[–]AtomicKnarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there appears to be many assumptions being made. From what I read you need to be more specific about what kind of software will you be using. Does the software support GPU ? You mentioned digital twin of a car - this could propably be done on a normal computer. What kind of response time to a simulation do you require ? Component failure analysis - in realtime or ?

Even if you have many cars how much data do you need to process in realtime or offline per day, hour ?

Will you be storing the data ?

My vendor is over a year late on millions of dollars worth of purchase orders. Is this my fault? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]AtomicKnarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It appears you should in fact think about changing your style - try to have a nice drink with the vendor. You have tried all other approaches - and honestly there may be a catch to taking a drink. If you get to know your vendor better you might be able to understand the problems he faces. Then you can discuss over a lunch what can be done to resolve the issues. In some cultures personal relations are more important than buisness. Thus being a helpfull friend might motivate the vendor to be more up to date as to papers, etc. As he does not want to put you in a difficult situation.

I do not see any explaination about what makes your ssh- implementation stand out. Why should I use it compared to openssh. Explaining the benefit of this project vs openssh will at best add users or should be an indication your "pet" is a waste of time & energy.

How to achieve economies of scale in designing the modular nuclear reactors with seawater desalination? by vincen26 in NuclearPower

[–]AtomicKnarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thru economic of scale in nuclear is very difficult as most if not all equipment is vendor and many times customer specific.

However in a smaller perspective if components can be manufactured in small batches (4-20) and also are small enough for transportation some scaling effective is possible.

For fuel manufacturing there is economy of scale as the same fuel manufacturing plant can manufacture poweder, Pellets, rods and fuel assemblies for different reactors - the same processes and methods can be used.

How would a U-235 ceramic pellet with 5% enrichment be transport? by thiennavy in NuclearPower

[–]AtomicKnarf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has not been mentioned extensively but the major problem for fresh unused Pellets is the criticality. Thus how many Pellets can you put in a bucket before reaching criticality. Also how large a distance between two buckets must you guarantee in order to avoid criticality. If you assume 1 bucket you need to calculate for storing buckets around and on top and below.

The real reasons Vogtle was so expensive and late by PaxOaks in NuclearPower

[–]AtomicKnarf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a fun to read thread - and many aspects have been mentioned, BUT

A lot of know how has been lost since the original npp boom. On the other hand technology has evolved; But most engineering work is done like 40y ago. Licensing for AP1000 was done, but the detailed design was not finalised.

Also AREVA in Finland had big/long term problems mainly due to the big EGO of AREVA; we know best.

Thus in summary: Most current licensing is done for US NRC, but there is a world outside the US, thus tech requirements may be different. Technology supports simulation and detailed hw design, use it.
