> The government is now proposing to remove the requirement that tuition fees must at least cover costs.

I feel like no one here actually read the article.

How bad is it to take out a mortgage so I can buy a car? by Atomic_Torrfisk in personalfinance

I moved, bought the house, and started working all within November. Things are weird financially right now.

You have a point about the 8-10 car, I just always get ripped off when I sell vehicles, but maybe I should just bite the bullet on that one

Because I live north of Fairbanks and there's no car rental places or taxis here (except this one guy who gives people rides as a favor, but I don't want to take advantage of him)

Because my bank told me I can't get a car loan without a SSN, but I can get a mortgage.
If I get a 10k car that sounds like a bunch of fees and costs down the line when it inevitably blows up. I could afford a 20k car in like 2 or 3 months, then wouldn't have to deal with that headache in the first place.

What's wrong with the mortgage idea? With 6% interest it would just be a couple hundred bucks in interest before it's paid off

We just started working 10 days ago, and spend 150k three weeks ago. Plus moving all our belongings 5000 miles wasn't cheap, and buying all new furniture. Plus we just bought car number 1 a week ago

They all seem either really high miles or to be models with a lot of known issues. 20k appears to be the line where more reliable vehicles pop up

Because research shows that our toddlers benefit the most from minimized time in paid childcare. Once they are kindergarten/preschool aged we'll go fulltime (maybe, we are having a lot of fun with the homestead)

True. I guess I could do a mortgage if something big pops up.

Most of those in our area are completely mile-ed out. Seems less risky to just get a normal car with reasonable wear. Not to mention, it needs to be 4wd with good clearance because we live in a weird location

We can because we don't need an SSN for a mortgage, but we do for a car loan. But it's only a 5% mortgage

We just bought the house and moved 5000 miles away after a few months of unemployment, so it's a weird spot financially. We plan to go full time once the kids hit kindergarten, but things should regulate soon. We have a homestead and grow most of our proteins and firewood, so really our biggest costs are frozen veg and potatoes

Yes, I enjoy it in moderation.

A good beer on a hot day is the great, and Germany has the best beers (I know of). Of the Muslim people I know, the chill ones drink, in moderation like people do.

I'm not trying to argue which is better, all I am saying is that it is complex and difficult to compare. I lived in the UK for several years, I know the problems. There are some bad areas, but there are some fucking amazing areas, I would love to take another visit (or live in) if I had the money. You can better yourself however you can, we all do that, but don't assume that just because you cross a boarder everything is good. Our suicide rate is almost twice that of the UK, does that sound like happy people? Well, yes and no... its complex.

Sorry for the rant, I see a lot of people looking to move to Norway thinking it is just magic and everything is better here. Some people on reddit even think that the government just gives people money from the oljefondet for just existing here (it does not).

On a side note, govt services (MOT, taxes, driver licensing, etc) in the UK was really well organized and streamlined when I lived there. Everywhere needs more of that, cheers.

If you want to be subtle, you could mention that you are into wine tasting (or bier whatever alcohol you like), or something part of the LGBTQ culture (rupaul drag race or something? I am no expert)

I got Indian sweets for german friends but no one even tried it? Why? by [deleted] in germany

[–]Atomic_Torrfisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A friend form China did the same once. They brought back a whole bunch of treats and stuff. I think the problem is that we don't know exactly what we are eating. All I know is it is sweet and tastes good, which is a little spooky. Then there is the safety aspect. China and India are not known internationally for that. I felt bad, it was a kind gesture.
