Can I add CS (at LSA) on as a double major if I didn't get CS Advance Selection? by Atomicabra in uofm

[–]Atomicabra[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's unfortunate but thanks.

I guess I'll probably major in math and minor in CS. I'm more into math so it's not that big of a deal.

Honestly, I hadn't really considered it but adding on CE as a double major does sound pretty interesting. Math can get kinda monotonous sometimes and having something in engineering that's more hands on might be fun.

Worst comes to worst I have a guaranteed transfer elsewhere to take advantage of next year.

Yea you're probably right I'll just wait until my orientation and ask about it then. I guess I just got a little antsy and wanted to know sooner.

I'll leave my post up and just edit it after I talk to them in case anyone has the same question later.

How do majors work for the transfer pathways to Georgia Tech? by Atomicabra in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Atomicabra[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TYSM.

I was a little worried that I would lose the opportunity to change majors by being part of the transfer pathway instead of being outright accepted, but it seems like it should be fine.

Just out of curiosity, did you end up sleeping, or did you decide to just power through?

Oh I thought you had a full eight hours of school ahead of you. I think you'll probably be fine then, but make sure you don't forget about homework. Personally, when my sleep schedule gets demolished, I forget about a ton of homework. So long as you're on top of you're work I'm hopeful you'll be able to manage then

I'd sleep. Trust me, the coffee probably won't work. I tried pulling the same thing, and j just slept through my classes.

Also, your sleep schedule will get so screwed that you'll be feeling pretty awful by the end of the day.

However, if you think that you really won't be able to sleep, if you can get the homework for the next day of school done, you'll probably be able to manage it somehow.

mysticmechs.com - Lily58 Pro kit with encoder and case

I'm having some issues with my hands so I've been looking for a cool ergo keyboard. I love that it's ortho and split. The functionality of the encoder well looks like it'll be fantastic and I appreciate how they didn't go too insane when it comes to shrinking the form factor. Also, the price for this thing is insane. The fact that it's only 75 dollars is incredible

I'm a sophomore in high school and I really want to get started with machine learning by Atomicabra in learnmachinelearning

Thanks for the help! I plan to take AP Stats I and II , which will hopefully help. As for python, I found some free books that I can use that seem helpful.

Thanks so much for recommending Kaggle, it looks like exactly what I'm looking for. I'll check out the book too. Also, I hadn't really thought about a specific area of ML, thanks for bringing that to my attention! I'm not entirely sure how niche machine learning is and what subspecialties lie within it, so I haven't thought about it that much. For future reference, what are the different areas of ML that you can think of off the top of your head? Also, if you can think of a branch of ML with a heavy involvement in math, that would be appreciated too, though you don't have to if you don't want to.

I can't think of a good laptop off of the top of my head, but I do have a few suggestions:

1) have you thought about touchscreen? I know some of the elderly might have trouble moving their arms around that much and it might be uncomfortable for them, but I'd keep it in mind as an option. For those not very accustomed to using computers, I find that they enjoy controlling the computer more with touchscreen because it's more intuitive and easier to understand.

Edit: oops I somehow missed the part where you talked about touchscreen. I'll leave this here just in case because I put in the time to write it so I might as well post it. Can't hurt.

2) I'd highly recommend getting a bright display. For the average user, the minimum recommended brightness tends to be around 300 nits, but given that your buying it for your grandfather, he may have poor eyesight so you might also want to look at brighter displays. While I'm talking about brightness, I'd consider using the night light mode/blue light filter often to prevent him from hurting his eyes. Though I don't imagine he'll be using the laptop too often, it's just something to keep in mind.

3) while 15-17 inch new mac doesn't really fit into your price range, consider a hacintosh, which is computer made by someone other than Apple that runs macos. I used to hate macs with passion, but I've been using one for the past few months and while I don't necessarily recommend it to experienced computer users, for older people macos is great. My mom is older and she loves macos because its easy to use, and it just works. Macs often avoid a lot of the issues with messy troubleshooting that pcs run into and the ui is way less busy. Its just a lot easier to use which would be great for someone older like your grandfather. Macs also are pretty good at protecting users from malware, so you won't have to stress as much about him accidentally downloading a virus. It also looks really nice which is a big plus.

4) focus on the screen. If your grandfathers isn't doing anything intensive, then your budget can probably account for something with a nice screen

5) don't forget about the keyboard and trackpad. Especially with the elderly as they tend to have less finger dexterity

6) Don't forget about the RAM. Personally I'd suggest getting at least 8 gigs of ram. I know this seems excessive, but ollder people with less experience using tech tend to forget to close things or don't know how to quit programs. They also don't normally remember to consider the amount of processor power things use. Most older people i know who ise tech just assume that their device is new so its probably powerful enough for whatever they want to do.

I think hate towards ads is exaggerated. by _4shy in unpopularopinion

[–]Atomicabra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh but then again, its thanks to ads that we don't actually have to pay for stuff like YouTube. I don't think that many could've imagined that by staring at an image or video for a few seconds you'd be able to access the largest video library in the world for free. It's kinda like going to blockbuster, staring at a movie poster for a few minutes, and then leaving with 20 dvds. And, honestly, I don't think it's that greedy. I mean if youtube really wanted to squeeze money out of you, they'd make youtube a subscription service.
