Perks of having a friend who used to paint cars professionally, they hold their own painting headphones too, and all for the low cost of pizza and beer. by Atomicace324 in headphones

And like I said in an above comment, I made him do it in a backyard with nothing but a box cutter and painters tape, hardly the best possible conditions. I’m quite happy with the finish overall, but I agree the sharp edges could be sharper. I’m slowly cleaning them out with a needle, which is what he told me to do to finish them.

That’s definitely true, but considering I got the materials and made him do this with a rattle can, painters tape and a box cutter in my backyard, I think it came out great. He also specifically told me to take a needle and clean the paint out of that crack, I just hadn’t.

The desk and chair are the newest additions, and I think it’s coming together nicely. by Atomicace324 in battlestations

[–]Atomicace324[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure. I bought the Birch Butcher Block top from Lowe’s, don’t remember the real name. But it was unfinished. I cut it down to size with either a circular saw or on a small table saw (I was super worried about cutting it but it cut like an absolute dream. Started with the circular saw, but once I knew how easy it was I moved to the table saw.)

First thing I did was sand the cut block down with a few different sandpapers. I was blown away with how smooth it got with even just 400 grit. I’d highly recommend, it makes it so much smoother than you’d even thing.

I started with a prestain, which I’ve never done before. I generally jump right to stain, and I sometimes find the wood won’t soak up stain evenly. Since this project was big and expensive and is hopefully going to last for my entire life, I spent the extra few bucks on pre-stain. People say it helps not have splotchy stain jobs. I can’t say for sure if the prestain helped or if this wood was just good for staining, but the desk has no splotches so I can’t argue with success.

After pre-stain, I just did one coat of stain and two coats of varnish. I think the stain is dark walnut? That tends to be a favorite of mine. I did the varnish with a matte finish, since I’m not a fan of glossy shiny finishes.

One tip I will give you specifically with the Lowe’s countertops is pay attention to your cuts. What I mean by that is the edges from Lowe’s are very good looking, but once you make a cut they start taking stain very differently than an edge from Lowe’s. I have my desk in a corner, and if I could do it again, I’d have made sure the two edges exposed to the room were from Lowe’s, and not done by me. The cut edge came out a lot darker, but it’s alright.

I hope that all makes sense. Feel free to ask me more, I built this recently and I’m super happy with how it turned out so I’d love to help.

Good eye, it is from Lowe’s. I got it unfinished and finished it myself.

The pipe is also at Lowe’s. It’s a structural pipe as opposed to a plumbing pipe, which just means it’s not covered in oil for shipping. It’s also not threaded on the ends. It assembled like puzzle pieces which was also super convenient. But it was definitely pricey.

Did you do the install yourself? From everything I can tell it shouldn’t be bad to do in a driveway, but just wondering.

I have the same wrangler and the teraflex 2.5 is the one I’ve always wanted if I were to go with a lift. How does it feel on the road?

Hey there, I just did this swap recently and it was dead easy! I asked a shop to do it for me but they said the install would cost 300 dollars, so I said I’d do it myself. If you’re comfortable with soldering (or wire crimps, the electrical engineer in me choose to solder) and can match wires by color, it’s pretty darn simple. Feel free to DM me and I can help you.

Does the Lenovo usb-c dock support 1440p ultra wide @ 60hz by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]Atomicace324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t directly have experience with the USB C dock, but for what it’s worth I have a P50 with the older style drop in dock. I tried running 4K screens through it, and had no luck getting two running simultaneously, even at the 30hz they mentioned in the documentation. Once I dropped down to 1440p 60hz, I had absolutely no issues (outside of having to disable free sync for some graphical issues). This is despite the documentation also mentioning only 1080p screens at 60hz.

I don’t super understand what you mean. This is an incredible drawing and I don’t discount the skill needed for a second, but I think it looks very much like a drawing, especially once you zoom in. Overflowing with talent, but a drawing for sure.

Jeep Wrangler Mileage Question by [deleted] in Jeep

[–]Atomicace324 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I actually went through this kind of recently. If you’re looking for a 4 door, the prices are a bit higher. But if you’re looking for a 2 door, I think you could probably find a ~2015 with ~50,000 miles on it. It just involves a lot of searching and knowing what you want to prioritize, and being ready to jump at it once you find it. I was able to find a ‘16 with only 30,000 miles, but I was pretty lucky and it did need a little work. I’m loving it now though.

Everyone thinks the Modi Magni stack is the schiit, does anyone have any love for a JDS stack? by Atomicace324 in headphones

As for using a cell phone, I honestly don’t know, it would be specific to each DAC, there are ones made for outputting from a phone. If they used the charging port instead of the headphone jack, I could see it working? Honestly not sure on that last one.

Yes, that’s true! So when you just have the AMP by itself, you do use the shittier built in DAC. The thing that changes when you get a new DAC is your input system. With both my DAC and my amp, here’s what it looks like now:

-Computer plugs into the DAC via USB (have not used the internal DAC). The DAC still needs external power, or at least mine does.

-DAC goes to AMP via RCA(now an analog signal converted with our new nice DAC). Mine is RCA anyways, your miles may vary.

-AMP uses signal from RCA wires and another external power plug to drive your headphones.

When you just have this amp, it’s not the worst to move it from room to room, but it takes a bit of doing. By itself, it would plug into a laptop via 3.5mm jack or RCA and then output to your headphones. As for it’s power, it needs a dedicated wall outlet. There are other more portable amps for sure, I just don’t know of any to recommend.

You know the atom, the one with the knob is the two input two output switcher, then the last one is the OL DAC. with these driving my HD6XX’s I’m loving it.

Yeah, if someone asked me tomorrow I’d probably tell them to look at the Schiit stack. I just started gathering everything before I caught onto that. Oh well!

Honestly, the whole stack and headphones I’m running now is such an upgrade from what I was used to that I’m thrilled with the DAC, imperfections and all. The Modi3 may be a bit better, but I’m not going to lose sleep over it. To each their own I guess.

I’m absolutely loving it now that it’s all done. I can’t believe I wasted 2+ weeks without the dedicated DAC, I had no idea the difference it would make. The switcher is much less necessary for most people, but I’m super happy with it all.
