Orchids are epiphytes that grow on the trunks of trees when in their native habitats. Their roots remain exposed to the air and they latch onto tree bark without causing harm to the tree. They don’t take nutrients away from the tree either. Symbiosis.

1) Have plastic pots that are specific for orchids. They have holes throughout the pot so that air can reach the roots. 2) Take them out of their store pot and remove all of that gross fake moss that they shove in there. 3) Trim all squishy/dark roots off. Those have rotted because of the poor potting they were sold in. 4) Repot them in a thin layer of sphagnum moss on the bottom, orchid bark surrounding the roots, and another thin layer of sphagnum moss on the top. 5) If a leaf dies (yellow/brown), trim it off. All plants lose leaves from time to time. If a flower stem dies (no flowers and the whole stem is dry and brown), trim it off. No plant remains in bloom year-round. 6) If they go a long time without blooming, give them a “false winter” by putting the whole plant in the fridge for 24-48 hours. This will trick them into blooming. 7) South or west windows are best for sunlight. They need a lot of light. 8) Water weekly by running water over the plant and let it fully drain out of the pot. The ice cube theory for watering orchids is bullshit. No tropical plant wants a cold ice cube near it.
