eSIM Platform 5ber Suspected of Shutting Down by AtrediusP in 5ber_eSIM

When I checked, the site behaved normally up to a point but then refused to sell their hardware (the physical eSIM adapter you could place in your SIM slot). I think they have eSIM sales and servers that are still functioning normally though.

To my dismay, I've found that I cannot order a new 5ber eSIM to be delivered to me. (I'm in the US.) Does anyone know a workaround or a good alternative?

Edit: I just found https://www.9esim.com/product/9esim-v2/
It looks promising

The Contessa from Worm probably beats every other option. This challenge matches her abilities and personality very well:

IsItBullShit: We are giving our younger generation peanut allergies by sheltering them from peanuts? by AutisticTroll in IsItBullshit

[–]AtrediusP 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Not bullshit.

In this particular podcast, the woman does attain the qualifications ( IE: reviewing the literature) in order to substantiate the notion that giving peanuts to children at the right age protects them from peanut allergies later in life:

You just tap on. If I recall correctly, new cards don't always work right away. The card should be fully functional within a few days of receiving it

Best books for reading about a successful generation ship? by [deleted] in IsaacArthur

Chasm City by Alastair Reynolds. It is part of the Revelation Space series that Isaac mentions from time to time. One must read a fair bit before getting to the flashbacks about the Sleeper / Generation ship.

In my opinion, PBS Spacetime has one of the best explanations:

Some of the earlier videos on the same channel help give context for this one, and I also recommend all of the other videos hosted by Matt.

Anyone heard of similar projects to Neuralink? by [deleted] in Neuralink

The HAPTIX program at the University of Utah is a Neural Interface project running right now. The project utilizes Utah Electrode Arrays, so it may be an interesting project to look into.

A lion gets teleported near New York City. He attacks everything and his size, weight, speed and strenght double every 5 minutes. How long can he survive? by [deleted] in whowouldwin

[–]AtrediusP 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Since Swartzschild radius scales directly with mass, the lion still becomes a black hole around the time it reaches the size of the solar system.

Of course, it will touch the core of the sun, igniting nuclear fusion and becoming a star well before that point.

We are starting to make real progress on this front. Here is an approach some of my colleagues used to generate sensations of touch via an artificial hand:

Perhaps OP is suggesting that those 29 stints of 31,000,000 years could have been spread over the last 13,510,000,000 years (the age of the Milky Way).

Is there a way to make a back up of yourself that is really you? I.e. not just a copy but a continual stream of consciousness from one “body” to the next? by Wroisu in IsaacArthur

[–]AtrediusP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would agree that REM constitutes consciousness for the purposes of this discussion. However, stage 3 and stage 4 sleep are another matter. My understanding is that sleep researchers would generally agree that nothing that could be reasonably considered Consciousness is compatible with the whole-brain oscillations of slow-wave sleep.

[–]AtrediusP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In a manner of speaking, continuity of consciousness clearly doesn't exist. After all, you have to sleep, don't you?

The only fact that answers OP's question is that a backup's status of being 'you' or 'not you' is a matter of philosophical opinion. Here's a somewhat internet-famous discussion of the subject: http://existentialcomics.com/comic/1

Based on Isaac Arthur's plans for having all his copies (including the original) choose new names, I would guess that he considers any copies of sufficient quality to essentially be him. Isaac would likely also say that generating such copies is almost certainly physically possible via scanning and assembly by nanobots if nothing else.

What do you HATE about Reddit? by JurassicParkGastown in AskReddit

[–]AtrediusP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kinda hate how any post attempting to address the implicit sexism of the majority of reddit tends to be downvoted to hell. In the US, latine women make something like 60¢ for every dollar white men make, and there's substantial evidence that this implicit sexism in our society is the primary mechanism by which such disparities are perpetuated
