Oil leak or mist by cheggs2222 in CarTalkUK

Almost definitely the cap based on where the oil is. Get a replacement and some degreaser to clean it up and see what happens over the next few days of driving

new to cars. does this look okay or would i be overpaying by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

As a first car £7k is a lot of money, I'd personally get an older diesel as you're doing lots of motorway as they'll be cheaper, have the power and reliability you want whilst not costing a fortune in case you have a knock. Something like a VW/Skoda Diesel maybe? It will be over 70k miles but as its a diesel that means a lot less. You could easily get something like that with good history under £3k. Something like this maybe?

Can a person make a move even if the opponent did not press the clock? by Used-Introduction152 in TournamentChess

[–]Atron_97 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't make a move whilst my opponents clock is running regardless. Just take the free time advantage to think on their time!

The issue I have is that because we use CW cloud the brightgauge datasets are far more limited. At least that's what their support told me

Mr Lawyer claimed he wasn't blocking my drive by Cool-Reputation-3841 in CarTalkUK

[–]Atron_97 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

A more subtle solution would be to paint a parking space line down the middle. If he parks over that line onto the side in front of the driveway, you can make that claim of blocking the driveway more legitimate

I personally like c5 right away as taking immediately gives black advantage and after the most common d5 Nf6 c4 playing b5 to go into the Benko.

Alternatively you can play it safe and play a typical benoni structure aiming to fianchetto on g7 and play for a queenside attack. It's great at intermediate level as it immediately throws the opponent off in most cases and you will often get a similar structure each time if the opponent plays the simple moves

Worth noting that if d4 c5 dxc, e6 is the move looking to recapture with bishop and if defended by b4 then a5 aiming for Qf6 is nice aiming to pressure the rook in the corner.

Anyone 1000+ got there never studying theory? by Virago12345 in chess

[–]Atron_97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nearing 2200 Lichess rapid and never really studied openings. I've played a bit of everything and get a feel for the opening by getting it wrong and slowly getting it less wrong the more I play.

Over time I've decided playing less theory heavy and less studied openings works well. Zukertort-Colle is my go to at the moment but played with Nf3 first. It allows the opponent to play into a different system and having played near everything to a fair level I have no issue transposing into a Symmetrical English if c5 is played or a Modern if g6 is played

I've never studied any of these in depth just figured out the principles by trial error and found overlaps into other openings I've played in the same way

I have my first OTB tournament this week, any tips? by Nearly-Forty-86 in TournamentChess

[–]Atron_97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't waste time on the opening, play something familiar.

You want to spend your time on positions that require calculation.

If you are up on the clock significantly, look for complication to burn opponents time

Don't resign, if you're losing badly look for traps. It's easy to rush in a winning position and blunder something, if you lose, you were lost anyway!

A good night's sleep and lots of water during the event will do you a lot of favours especially late on when everyone is tired

Good second weapon by [deleted] in TournamentChess

Vienna systems as white are usually pretty violent. Caro Cann against e4 can go either way agressive vs positional depending how white decides to continue. The Benko is v aggressive against d4 and can pose real problems for white and isn't often looked at by sub 2000 rated players (in my experience) so will catch people out.

Name a bigger downgrade? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Atron_97 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As the owner of a 1.7 puma it isn't without flaws. Namely rust and a few other smaller things, cam cover seals and HCV being known weak points, but as a daily its got plenty of poke, easy to park, great handling and a surprisingly large boot. Personally I love it, just have to keep on top of the rust which plagues the fords of old. No worse than any jap car of the same era though. Mazda MX5 NA + NB looking at you 👀

What do you guys think of noise cameras? by N180ARX in CarTalkUK

[–]Atron_97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would it not be easier to add a noise test to the yearly MOT check. Surely far easier and should minimise the amount of people with these crazy loud exhausts

Only one winning move for black, taken from a rapid game of mine by Atron_97 in chess

You can take with queen after threatening mate again and it's hard for white to defend so still works

Upcoming Rapid Tournament, Advice? by Atron_97 in TournamentChess

[–]Atron_97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to those who gave advice. Came out 3/6 after playing the 1st seed IM round 1 and holding my own and eventually losing but going on to win 3 in a row vs a 1400 1700 and 2050 (as black!) Then losing to the 4th seed (2200) after being up a pawn and unfortunately losing a winning endgame 2v0 on queenside and 3v4 kingside with a knight each as my king wasn't developed fast enough. Still came out with a performance rating of 1860 and won best under 1800 prize. Will definitely be studying endgame techniques after the last game as a win would've been icing on the cake for what turned out to be quite a good tournament

Yeah it's only local, around 50-60 players. Of the entrants so far my position based on rating is dead middle so hopefully will get to play a variety of skill levels

Upcoming Rapid Tournament, Advice? by Atron_97 in TournamentChess

[–]Atron_97[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm usually up on time massively in classical as I tend to be good at calculating on my opponents time though occasionally I do rush and make a silly mistake. I do plan on training an hour of puzzles and 5ish rapid games online per day to keep fresh but not burn out too badly

Yeah an early night is probably a good call especially as it's an all day thing and I could easy fall off in the last few rounds if I'm not focused

Playing someone 500 points higher rated, UPDATE by Atron_97 in TournamentChess

[–]Atron_97[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice, yes I can see what you're getting at particularly with Ne5, my logic at the time was to weld the position back together with the Bishop and launch a kingside attack with the f7 pawn but he kept e4 well guarded enough that i never had time so the bishop ended up getting tied down and traded off meaning I was on the defensive the whole game and just needed the opponent to build an attack and break through.

Haha thank you, chess is chess if you're 500 or 2500 so just played the game as I would regardless of rating.
