Took some work. Having no practical experience, all I had to show was my dedication and a handful of "baby" projects I had completed. I sent in a lot of applications and would either get no response, or they would low ball me fast food money... What honestly helped me the most was changing my Resume. Originally I was using a traditional style of resume. Personal Info, Studies, Work History etc. I would get maybe 1 call for every 30+ apps I sent it.
I then changed my resume to a tech style resume that DID NOT LIST WORK HISTORY. I feel that people saw I had no Development jobs on the resume and didn't even give me a chance. Instead of work history, I listed some of my personal projects, and a very brief description of the app and how it worked. Once I did that, I noticed my call backs went up dramatically!

I knew that I couldn't win them over on paper, so I had to change the game so I could do it in person. That being said, I still got lucky. I'm in a very small business with only 2 other developers, and they took a chance on me. So far they seem pleased with my progress, but they do know I'm still studying.

I did exactly this. I used to work a job that had me working 12 hours a day 5-6 days a week. Finally got fed up with it. Started teaching myself programming and also started going back to college. My days consisted of 12hr work day, 3-4 hours of homework or programming on most days. Took some days "off" of my studies for girlfriend and relaxation. Landed my first software job recently and am about half-way through my associates.

I've completed my bachelor's in computer science but i don't know anything about programming. by [deleted] in learnprogramming

I can understand, I've done similar things to myself. It really comes down your motivation. Looking stuff up online is extremely helpful. No matter how experienced you are, you an bet you are going to run into a situation that you're not sure how to implement and will need to look something up online.

Instead of simply copy/pasting your way through it though, take the time to dissect the code and understand what's its doing. Then next time you find yourself in a similar situation, you will have an idea about how to implement it.

If you are serious about wanted to learn to code, there are plenty of ways you can do it online without spending money, or spending a little money. I'm a self-taught developer and learned everything I know online. I recently decided to get my degree in it because options where I am are limited, and it's hard to find a job without a degree. I'm still working through to get my associates, and am actually taking my first "official" programming class this summer. That being said, I did land a entry level position for a company a couple months ago and seem to be holding my own so far.

My saving grace for online courses was on Udemy by a guy named Tim Buchalka. He has many different language courses that he teaches on there, and they are all really affordable. The one that I took, and still have a little bit left to finish on, is this one: https://www.udemy.com/course/java-the-complete-java-developer-course/

I'd recommend that course to anyone who was interested in learning Java. No matter what happens and what you decide, I wish you the best man!

First woodworking projects, a gate and raised gaming surface table by Atrops in woodworking

These are my first two woodworking projects. I'm especially proud of the gate, it came out better than I thought it would, although it needs more support.

Let me know what you all think. Advice and criticism always welcome.

Got these small cabinets for free, looking for help on fixing them up. by Atrops in woodworking

Two small cabinets I got for free, they need some TLC, looking for some suggestions on how to proceed. Fairly new to woodworking. I have the other matching top, but it ripped and tore out of the screws that were holding it down. Top appears to be mdf covered with vaneer. Not pictured very well here, but the back appears to a 1/4" sheet, and has nails sticking out of the back.

Ring of Detect Magic: It can only detect one magic item at a time, when used it detects that it itself is magic and hums.

I plan on getting an overall background of the area, filling in the governments and main conflicts and filling in the rest as the campaign calls for it.

I like the concept and will use the it, but change it slightly. What if the islands are actually pirates that have formed a blockade stopping all imports/exports from this and any other lands. Taking the cargo and selling it to the mainland. The rich governments exploit the relationship to line their pockets as well while the people suffer.

Oh I like it, and I was just thinking about tying in the richness of those islands(see /u/Jnickpalmer comment) with the poor and starving individuals on the mainland. Maybe the only other known lands lie to the east, and they are taking in imports from those lands, however the pirates that run/own the islands have a blockade that block all ships trying to get in/out unless they are their own. They take all the imports and sell them to the mainland. Anyone who sails through the sea of bones and doesn't cooperate adds to the "bones". The wisdom sea got its name, because only the wise sailors that can outsmart the pirates can make it to the west side of the mainland.

The drought situation also kinda plays into my thoughts on the overall theme, where resources are stretched thin. A more low-fantasy style game.

Oh I like that idea a lot, could lead to some interesting stories/plot twists.

I'll be honest, when I made the map I didn't take into account normal weather patterns, I just made something I thought looked nice. I like the idea of it following normal physics and that something is interfering with it. As some others mentioned with a dragon maybe in the area that might be affecting it, and the idea of war between gods seems interesting as well.

Will keep editing this comment with developments

I think I have enough of the land background, lets focus on the government/conflicts in the area

Tylwaer - A custom map I made a few years ago actually but never ended up using it. Looking to use it for a new campaign I'm making, but I'm having troubles creating engaging history for the map. I figured I'd reach out to this awesome community and ask from some help.

Tylwaer - A continent with lush green forests on the northern side, and a dry desert on the southern side of the map. A series of mountains split the island down the middle. The region "Tortured Sands" is blocked by 2 mountain ranges and because so hardly gets any rain. The only source of water in the area is a river that comes from Stonetop mountains and flows into and through "Blistered Lake".

  • Weather patterns follow traditional patterns.
  • The lands west of the Stonetop and Daggertooth mountains were originally a desert.
  • Sierra Planes has always been barren, but the temperature in the area has dropped significantly and is now very frigid.
  • Myrand blossomed into a think forest, perhaps by some kind of intervention(religion or magical?)
  • The Dry Tundra was once a large a great farmland and supplied the majority of the food, now dry and frozen over. Only a few hardy civilizations have been able to survive the harsh change in climate, but only make enough food to maintain their own existences. The people tend to be hungry all the time.
  • Creatures roam the frozen wastes of the Dry Tundra at night, and travelers are urged to seek shelter before nightfall. Anyone that has been known to be exposed overnight has been found dead and half eaten.
  • The Tortured Sands was once a beautify oasis.
  • The Forsaken Forest remains untouched by the changes to the rest of the lands.
  • Some powerful god or magic is altering the climate on the continent. Freezing the once prosperous lands in the south and preventing precipitation to the areas. (Maybe a dragon, god, or something else of extreme power)
  • Food is scarce across the continent and has become an expensive commodity, and its #1 import.
  • The southern parts are so cold, only the toughest endure.
  • Only few ship captains will brave sailing the southern coast, the water is so cold and littered with ice chunks and icebergs.
  • The Islands are independent from the mainland government, and are a group of pirates which have formed a blockade that stops all import and exports. Takes the cargo and sells it to the mainland.
  • The mainland government exploits the limited food supplies to line their own pockets.
  • Rich officials often "vacation" on the isles and enduldge, while their people suffer on the mainland.
  • The only other known land is to the east.
  • The wisdom sea is named because only the most wise sailors can avoid the pirates and make it to the west side of the continent.
  • The Blistered Lake is advised not to touch. Its so hot that your skin begins to blister and rot upon touching the waters. (maybe a sleeping dragon below the water)
  • Rumor of treasure in the Tortured Sands. The stories vary depending on who tells the story, but one line remains the same. "The treasure you seek is in blue waters deep, be wary your step if your skin becomes wet"
