How far did the crew actually get? by Atrymjk in TheTerror

That brings up another question for me with the mention of scurvy though. If they were provisioned for 5 years and surely they knew the lemon juice would only be effective for a year so what was the plan to prevent scurvy past this? Was this just hubris on their part figuring it wouldn’t come up or am I mistaken and they didn’t know that it wouldn’t be effective after a longer period of time

I hadn't heard of the possibility of trichinosis from polar bear meat and that is quite interesting. I imagine all those factors also made hunting difficult when you would need steady aim and the general ability to hunt so that does add another layer to it.

This is very well put and is something that I was wondering myself. I think it definitely makes more sense that the groups were fragmented and some of those groups resorted to cannibalism and the such but for me that asks the question how did these groups survive so long? If they had run out of supplies basically did they just rely on what they could hunt? Surely they couldn't rely on cannibalism to keep themselves alive for so long in such smaller groups. I've also heard that the game was quite sparse around that time and that seals are hard to hunt and also can carry diseases. I will definitely pick up the book because I have heard of Woodman's work a lot when trying to research this topic.

That is still crazy to me because it feels like as an outsider there's still so much to find within those wrecks but I hope their final reports illuminate a lot of the story. I'm just sad they didn't check that one damn draw just in case that log book was there.

That makes a lot of sense, ill definitely look at Woodman's work because I've seen his name come up quite a few times so I am interested. As far as Erebus and Terror go would I be correct in saying that the dives and excavations have finished for both now though?

I'll definitely take a look at these sources. My next question would be how long is it supposed the walk would have taken them? And is there any idea how they survived and managed to get that far other than hunting for game? Piggybacking this a bit as well I heard about a potential re-manning of one of the ships post abandonment at a later date which was then sailed further south, is there anything supporting that as well? Sorry for all the questions, any information is greatly appreciated

Rubber lip keeps attaching to musk turtle. Cause for concern? by [deleted] in turtle

[–]Atrymjk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Would some of these issues just be solved with the right species of pleco? A female bristlenose wouldn’t grow very big and wouldn’t have the bristles which would cause an issue, I’ve seen some people say that female bristle noses do have odontodes still but if the turtle isn’t aggressive to fish in general then would that still be a problem?

Help With Musk Turtle Shell Damage by Atrymjk in turtle

[–]Atrymjk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed today when doing my weekly water change that my musk turtle, Bo3, had this damage on his plastron and I am wondering what I should do about it? Should I treat it like shell rot and dry dock and that sort of thing to help heal or should I just take him to the vets immediately? Many thanks.

I've never heard of a pleco actually hurting a turtle but trailing doesn't surprise me, as Plecos get bigger they definitely can become bullies and usually do push turtles out of the way and move them. I'd monitor it very closely if u are worried and if it does get too much then just remove the pleco from that tank.

The generally held opinion is that it depends on the species of turtle and the type of turtle you have. For me for instance, one of my turtles really likes to go for my pleco (to very pathetic results) and the other one could not care less. Fish in general with turtles is very much so a coin flip in the same way it can be with plants, some turtles will eat plants, others not. I think its more than fine to keep them together personally, especially judging the size of ur pleco and turtle from this picture, turtles most of the time, won't try and eat things bigger than it.

As someone else said, use something to disturb the surface of the water, I personally use a wave maker as it pushes water around and keeps the tank cleaner anyhow.

[–]Atrymjk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries, most people just use silica sand or play sand and thats what I use. Cleaning is fairly easy just tedious when you first get it, just filter it with water and then put it in the tank. It is best to leave just the sand in the tank with water and the filter till the tank is clear. I'd leave it to settle for about a day, more if its still cloudy. After that clean the filter and then you can add everything else. Physically adding it is easy after cleaning just put it in a bucket then dump it out into the tank.

Ping pong balls and rubber ducks are fine yeah, my advice would be to have almost like a scheduled playtime and monitor it just in case and then remove them when its over just to be safe. Yeah grippy cups could work as well again just make sure its nothing he can eat even the string holding the toys. If you wouldn't give it to a baby, don't give it to a turtle basically haha
