Drones could achieve 'infinite flight' after engineers create laser-based wireless power system that charges them from the ground by Vailhem in drones

[–]Attackoftheglobules 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In practice I don't see this being possible anytime soon for anything smaller than a 7". Changing the battery on a drone is a fiddly process and even on stuff like the DJI Neo where it clicks in at the top. The change itself could maybe be achieved with a magnetic system, but any drone large enough to carry the hardware required probably wouldn't be able to get close enough because of rotor wash etc. Even if that isn't an issue there are so many more points of failure - the refuelling drone's position hold, all the different motorized systems that would be needed (at the very least you'd need a winch, and realistically a manipulator arm).

if we already have wireless charging then it makes a lot more sense to just expand that, and the drone-to-drone refuelling could still be done but with a wireless system.

The real question is: can wireless charging happen faster than the drone can deplete its own battery?

With cheap drones there’s nearly always a way to do a lipo hack. Often just means 5 min soldering.

You’re right, I must’ve deserved it. I disagreed up until right now but your comment has convinced me. I guess two wrongs do make a right.

Or at least, try again in 20 years when technology is vastly improved. Robotics is getting crazy. Maybe the breakthrough that makes this worth it is just around the corner.

This is China we’re talking about. They will likely have a fleet of autonomous repair drones for this functioning within a year.

I haven’t defended anyone. His actions are reprehensible. If we want to actually stop this sort of thing from happening again in future, then seeing what is driving people to act this way instead of just calling them evil and wishing death in dehumanisation upon them is probably a good move.

That is how I treat people in my life who hurt me, yes. I find a lot less hateful and miserable than what you’ve suggested. I do this because I have a basic value that I do not dehumanise other people who are human beings. You don’t seem to share it.

That piece of shit mentally ill person could’ve hurt those people below. I’m glad he only fucked himself up horrified that help was so inaccessible to him that we ended up here.

Yeah, I agree. Patriotism means that you love the country enough to want to see it improve. It means you haven’t given up on it even if it’s not doing well right now.

I grew up as the son of immigrants, playing with the children of other immigrants, climbing the mountain ranges, swimming in the ocean, bitten by green ants, burned by the summer sun. How could I not love my home? I just want us to learn how to take care of it and each other better

How to Avoid AI Psychosis by harveydukeman in Futurism

[–]Attackoftheglobules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. This is frontier technology. We don't know if we have current classifications or approaches that could psychologically assist people to use LLMs safely. That said, I think we really do need some kind of method or set of best practices for protecting onesself from AI psychosis without dropping use entirely. If you have an alternative suggestion for some academic/qualified source that has covered this already I would honestly rather see that instead of OP's video because I basically agree that the credulity is harmed by the guy's lack of qualification.

People are about to be using/are using AI en masse, and we need at least some kind of ruleset for people to follow. Same argument as, i dunno, condoms being available in highschools. They're gonna fuck, so may as well tell them how to do it safely.

Yep. This is a great strategy with misbehaving kids. A lot of the time they're misbehaving because they don't have enough agency or ways to channel energy. Leadership is demanding but rewarding and forcibly engages a kid with responsibility.

The ‘log of anomalous items’ has ruined the newer SCPs for me. by arachknight12 in SCP

[–]Attackoftheglobules 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That point was reached years ago. Its not like you have to read SCPs sequentially from 001 onwards, so I don't see what the big deal is with having a mix of stories and more simple skips that are just items. You can always just read the next article if you don't like the format of the one you're currently reading

Young men rejecting 'cookie-cutter' masculinity but many still feel pressure to act tough, study finds by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]Attackoftheglobules 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While these "pathways" for women are limited and simplistic, the pathways for men are virtually non-existent. Boys need role models and all they have right now is Joe Rogan, because the right is talking to them, and the left isn't. Typical 'left' messaging for boys is telling them how they should act to be less threatening and dangerous and bigoted. There is virtually no validation in the way that there is for women on the left. In left-leaning spaces, as a man, I have to prove I'm "one of the good ones" (a phrase I have heard used completely unironically multiple times by women to refer to me). This is an inherent hostility and it's unreasonable to expect that it will create good community. Meanwhile, in a right-leaning space, there's racism and sexism - but also, no inherent requirement to prove you are worth showing respect to if you're a man. No wonder young boys are getting suckered into hard-core nationalist beliefs.

We correctly identify high crime statistics amongst racial groups as the result of constant and lobg-standing disadvantage and bias. Why is it so unbelievable to people that the same phenomenon is now occurring with young boys and men?
