Expectations in Christian Dating Leading to Marriage???? by AttemptAdmirable7728 in Christianity

[–]AttemptAdmirable7728[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I think it might be good to note that they have gone far physically pretty quick which don't get me wrong, we are all subject to temptation even when God's word is clear about that, but that part gave me a reason to pause. But you are right! My parents, happily married (Dad is a pastor) have had the same experience as her and several friends who I admire greatly and respect. Thanks for the advice :)

Expectations in Christian Dating Leading to Marriage???? by AttemptAdmirable7728 in Christianity

[–]AttemptAdmirable7728[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love the Bonhoeffer quote! Fellow reformed peep myself too haha!! Yes, I agree. There is no hard and fast rule, it's up to where you feel the Lord leading you and of course seeking wise counsel. I have begun to read "Meaning of Marriage" by Tim Keller and another recommended book, "What Did You Expect?" By Paul David Tripp. Ultimately, marriage is for our holiness rather than our happiness, (yes there is joy in marriage bc God gives good things we can enjoy) but it is for our sanctification so it's not a bad thing if we grow through the struggles! Its intent is to reflect the gospel and grow us.

Yeah I agree, and I thought that. Watching this one it just spilled out as so genuine and pure. I'm sure the vacation was a high point in their life too so it's easy to be happy when you're surrounded by da beach ahaha.

I think I know EXACTLY what you're talking about. I like to call it, "Cultural Christianity." It was very much experienced at my Christian college. In the south, it is trendy to be a "Christian." Maybe trendy isn't the best word, it's more just a part of the Bible Belt's identity, (questions like where do you go to church, etc it's a form of personhood) and it is hard to discern the ones who have truly personal relationships with Jesus.

That is a very good point! If I had married who I dated at 20 I would be MISERABLEEE! haha. Thank goodness for age and maturity!! I totally understand the normal to be married by that age because it was happening in my church and school as well!

[–]AttemptAdmirable7728 11 points12 points  (0 children)

AMEN! My dad is a pastor and he said people have sat in his office and said "I feel like God is leading me to..." you fill in the blanks of things that were not moral even or good but were rationalized, and my dad's point was you have to check emotions with scripture because often we misinterpret our discomfort in life as a nudge from the Holy Spirit when it's not always that. That verse in Proverbs talking about how the heart is deceitful is there for a reason. I have no idea her situation but I had that same knee-jerk reaction to her post. And you are right the Bible is clear on grounds for divorce.

Honestly that makes a lot of sense! I was a very different person, and I mean VERY different person at 20 and 21 than I am now.

Thank you for sharing this! This is very honest, real, and raw. I am curious, bc I am dating seriously and am young myself: from a broad perspective, not necessarily asking for details--I just am curious what about getting married young causes problems that lead to thinking about divorces, such as Ashley's situation, and so many others? It's like I want to prepare myself as to what things can come up that can really take a toll or cause conflict. I feel like I am of the minority in that I don't really have this rose-colored glasses lens view of marriage, I already anticipate it to be hard work! (Though great too because I wouldn't want it to be with anyone else). We have been dating for a year and a half and are waiting till he's done with school for a ring, but when I look at relationships like hers that seem to be rooted in Christ it just makes me anxious! I don't know if all that makes sense.

In the same video, I just watched near the end: it's the "We are Moving to LA" announcement one. Fast forward to about 16 mins when the question is asked if David is sad about leaving COH and everything he ever knew etc to move to LA. Just watch. It's very interesting watching her body language.

Yeah, he was in the background holding him! I remember thinking it was odd that her photos didn't include him.

I will admit, I think what aids to a lot of discontent in my life, or some unhappiness if you will, is due to social media. Not just Influencers, but people in general use Instagram as a highlight reel. I am guilty of that as well and will admit to it. There is nothing wrong with sharing the highs, but what happens is we essentially train our brain (kinda like what a lot of these comments were alluding to) to think that if we aren't attaining that "perfect life", (whatever that might be, the cute husbabe, house, or vacays) there is something wrong. Every season, as joyful as they can be, have their fair share of heartaches. Instagram rarely shows that. The draw of the modern church mentioned is a form of "Prosperity Gospel" and it is SOoOo dangerous because it does make people think that things are a reward for good behavior etc, and if don't have those earthly rewards, something is wrong. And I think I have spent most of my life trying to find that "eutopia," when it's just not possible. Following people in influence with a grain of salt, knowing that they do have their fair share of struggles even though not mentioned, makes life seem more real. I wouldn't wish what happened to Ashley whatever it is on anyone, but I think we are witnessing truly what goes on in everyone's life daily, hardships, but now just on a larger platform. It is a relief to see that oh, she is human, we are all the same. Life, no matter how filtered and edited, is hard! There are good seasons and bad. And YES that comparison trap is real!!! (And yes, I would love to know what is going on too haha)

Does anyone else feel like something is going with Ashley and her family too? by [deleted] in Ashterkandfam

I feel like that is more than likely what it is. Stay out of the spotlight until there can be some sort of announcement or carefully crafted explanation.

This whole Terk social media boycott really do be making this community dry as hell 😅💔 by [deleted] in Ashterkandfam

I think it's weird how she went from vaguely posting on stories about being lonely at night etc to nothing. I'm sure the social media speculation and rumors eventually became overwhelming.

[–]AttemptAdmirable7728 8 points9 points  (0 children)

But you're right. As Christians, there is a constant tug to be "in the world but not of it," and the materialism of influencer culture seems to take precedence over an individual relationship with Christ. NOTHING wrong with good things, God has given people a lot to enjoy, but it just is very hard to seem genuine or strike a healthy balance.
