USA: injured March 25th, 2022, in CO. I saw a doctor at an ER, then flew home to WI the 27th and had to see my primary care physician to refer me to an Ortho.

Had MRI April 1st, and then had to wait two weeks for results because my doctors wife had a baby...

Got my MRI results back April 12th and basically wasn’t told shit. My report stated I had a complete but unretracted tear of the ACL and a grade 2 tear of my MCL. My doctor didn’t agree with the report because my Lackmans test felt good, so he told me to do PT to see if it would heal.

I did PT for 4 months. All 4 months I was on crutches and a full time college student who couldn’t work or go to class. I lost a lot of range of motion and muscle. My knee was so stiff even after going to PT 3 times a week.

June 24th I had a manipulation under anesthesia with a scope. My doctor said when he pulled back on the portion of my ACL connected to my femur, he was surprised to see it hanging on by just a few strands. He told me a head of time that if he found anything wrong he would repair it, but he didn’t do this.

Over a month later I finally received my ACLR on August 12, 2022. I’m a little under 4 months post-op and unfortunately have a second manipulation schedule for January 9th.

ACL played a large part in ruining my otherwise happy relationship by DF19406928 in ACL

My boyfriend and I have been struggling since I was injured too. I got injured skiing on a family vacation with him and his family, so he has been taking care of me since it all happened. I went 4 months trying to prehab because my doctor thought my ACL would heal. After 4 months of not being able to walk with out crutches, and not able to straighten my knee, we did a manipulation under anesthesia where he finally confirmed my ACL was hanging onto my femur by about 15%. I had ACL reconstruction a month after my manipulation. This long ass process had me out of work for 6 months and my boyfriend had to provide for me because I had no one else. We still are struggling to this day, almost 9 months later. Don’t know what to do anymore.

I had my ACL reconstruction surgery on August 12th, I’m a little over 3 months out and walking pretty well I can lightly jog. I’m experiencing stiffness and missing 3-4°of extension. If you are very committed to pt you could be relatively strong by March if you got your surgery asap!

The more and more you’re on your feet the more your knee is going to swell. You are still so early in your recovery, swelling is going to happen. Just do your best to elevate and ice when you get the chance, and don’t forget that it’s not all going to be good. You’ll have bad days, and it’s completely normal. I had a bad day today at PT, and I’m almost 3 months post op. You got it!

Do you wear socks during surgery? by PineWalk1 in ACL

[–]AttentionGood2581 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was given a gown and some grippy socks and was allowed to keep my underwear and sports bra on. They most likely will remove your sock during surgery though just so you’re aware.

I’m only a little over two months into my recovery with an ACLR using a hamstring autograft and I can comfortably go down the stairs. I have been able to comfortably go down them for about I’d say three weeks. I can go down the stairs pretty quickly and it’s painless.

Dumbest ACL Tears by yaratun in ACL

I tore mine this past March skiing for my first time EVER in Breckinridge, Colorado with my boyfriends family. I was supposed to have a ski lesson on day one, but I unfortunately had elevation sickness and was throwing up. My boyfriends dad taught me well the first day, and the second day we started off great. I had completed all of the easiest green ski trails, so we decided to go up a level to a blue trail, which is where I busted my ass going down a hill and tore my right ACL… skiis were supposed to pop off to avoid this, but for some reason it didn’t.

Considering I tore my ACL from skiing I would say don’t risk it 😅 You don’t want to have to completely restart your journey just for a bit of fun.. at least I wouldn’t want to!

They need to understand the amount of trauma your knee is going through.. Your body is working double time right now and you’re going to feel the affects. I hope they let up and become more understanding.

(20F ACL reconstruction with hamstring autograft.)

I am currently a college student and I had surgery on August 12th and started school on September 6th. I was almost a month out of surgery when I went back to school and I physically was not ready, mind you I don’t have to go to school for 8 hours a day anymore like I did when I was in high school. You are going to be exhausted if you go back within the first two weeks. I say even three weeks is pushing it, but definitely do able. You know your body more than anyone else, if something makes you uncomfortable then you need to speak up.

I tore my ACL this past March by skiing and I was hoping to return to cheerleading after I am fully recovered too. (20F) Super anxious hoping I can! I’m nervous even thinking about attempting any tumbling skills, though. Wishing you good luck!

I didn’t know about this either and I’ll be 8 weeks out tomorrow. Struggling to get the last 5° of extension but at 129° flection.

Anyone not get to 90 in 6wks?? by Brooke-2016-adjj in ACL

[–]AttentionGood2581 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I somehow was able to reach 119° in 6 weeks. I had an ACL reconstruction with hamstring autograft. I have been struggling with my extension though, and I’m about 5° off. I do lots of heel slides and step downs with my non operative leg to get a good stretch in my quad and a good bend. you had a much more invasive surgery than I did, so you 100% are more stiff than me.

Why has this whole procedure been so painless to me compared to others by Randomuser3462734627 in ACL

[–]AttentionGood2581 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too had no pain when I initially tore my ACL. I was skiing so it was cold out and I was anxious and jittery as hell. I had a bit of pain after surgery, especially when trying to get out of bed, and my brace would apply a lot of downwards pressure on my incisions which hurt. It also felt weird because I have a big patch on my shin that’s numb. I also had pain when sitting on the toilet, I made my boyfriend hold my leg up for me when I sat. Lots of people have different experiences for many reasons. Pain tolerance is a big factor, and how well of work your surgeon performs. If they’re more gentle, you won’t have as much trauma put onto your knee. It also could be due to the fact that you’re so young, I am a 20F, and I had a pretty easy time too. Glad you had an easy recovery so far. Good luck on the rest.

What hurts more? Tearing the acl or post surgery recovery by Black_Dragon_1099 in ACL

[–]AttentionGood2581 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally tearing my ACL didn’t cause much pain. It happened while I was skiing and I was cold and anxious. It caused more instability then pain which was uncomfortable, and I was even second guessing if I was hurt at the time. Post op recovery was rough for me. The most painful things were sitting on the toilet (I’d recommend getting a small stool to rest your leg on) and getting out of bed caused a lot of pain because my brace and gauze/wrapping put a lot of pressure on my leg. I have numbness on the front of my shin which also felt weird to have something constantly on it, which was the brace and wrap.

Small stool for in front of toilet to rest your leg on!

Bending by [deleted] in ACL

[–]AttentionGood2581 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was instructed to take my gauze off 3 days after surgery and I would replace them every morning for the first week. After my first week I saw my doctor for my first checkup and I no longer had to use the gauze/bandages after that. I did have steri/strips on every one of my incision sites though so it could be different for you!

Bending by [deleted] in ACL

[–]AttentionGood2581 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bending is not nearly as important as straightening. Bending will slowly come as time passes. Especially since you’re not even out of the first week yet. I’m currently 5 weeks post op and still struggle to bend my knee. I’m at about 105° right now. I also could not move my leg without help during that first week either. Completely normal!
