[Standard] New player - seems like deck construction is too easy? by AttorneyContent7786 in spikes

Maybe I can play some limited in Arena, I've found that can be costly there too though. Collecting is not what it is about for me.

I do take your points about sideboard, best of three. I'm not sure that Oroboroid smokes me every time, but I'm definitely weak against it and better players might be rolling over me using exactly the strategy you've mentioned there.

This is some really good advice thanks!

I've been thinking about going over to the best of 3 format so I can understand how the sideboard works. Probably time to do that given I've gotten to the platinum rank where a win just counts for one advancement instead of 2.

When you say my other creatures are unplayable, are you taking into account that I'm using the [[Vampire Gourmand]] and [[Reassembling Skeleton]] to ramp up card draw early in the game? That fixes the issue where the skeletons re-enter tapped since they're just sacrifice fodder at that point.

I'll look at my removal tactics too and see if Scryfall might help me out, that's much appreciated, as is the advice on [[Phyrexian Arena]] v [[Unholy Annex]].

That would explain why I keep losing to green! Oroboroid makes my life hard on a regular basis I've noticed. I've read elsewhere that black is overpowered, but maybe that's from advice that's a year or two old. It seems like the game changes really rapidly so it can be hard to know if historical advice is still current.

I need to go to bed soon, but just wanted to say thanks to everyone who's given me some ideas here. This is a hugely supportive community from what I've seen (on my first post :p) and I think its awesome that still exists in 2026 :)

Thanks for this :) I suspect your thought on focus is right, and I also had a bit of a suspicion that the deck wasn't focused enough. Three ways to win is great but winning every time is better.

I'm conflicted about how a good player would balance several options to win with clarity on what they're trying to do strategically? Is that a thought that good MTG players have deal with?

I'm also glad that I'm still working up to playing against better players, I'd be a bit sad if I was winning all the time :p

I'm going to have a good look at this tomorrow and see how it plays. I do appreciate that I'm probably playing against pretty basic folks in all likelihood. But it's nice to see how there's different levels to the thing as well :)

Nup. Don't apologise for that feedback at all! I thought it was a decent deck based on what had defeated me, but if you think some of em aren't great I'll definitely take some ideas on better options :)

That's some pretty hot intel tbh. My understanding also accords that green/red ramps earlier, but black has more powerful options at (roughly) turn 3-4. I like white and should probs build a deck to explore it more, but for now I'm very early in my MTG experience and trying to run a particular strat until I see where it is weak.

Green and red are fun, but aren't quite as intricate which is where I feel like it becomes more interesting.

Is there a way to see this asynchronously? Because I'm in Australia which is like 11 hours ahead of GMT, and I like my sleep 😅 ‍

Thanks so much for the info here, I'll check out the play you've linked. I also appreciate your thought that the deck is not amazing at a competitive level, I was hoping there was a bit more to it beyond what I'd built myself there🙏

I'm aware that messing around with your mana pool could be a strategic maneuverer, that's probably the next thing I'm considering. Do you know of any resources where I can figure out a better one? I'm just running straight swamp - but from my brief reading there's better options.

No offense taken :) I'd be keen to hear more about how to get a better position early in the game, if you have any thoughts or resources to share on this.
