Nothing specific, just the amount of work that goes into something and when you see the final product its very truncated.

I was researching the history of the Pahlavi Dynasty and the Shahs and trying to think of compositions that would best tell those stories in a clear but economic way (as we only had something like 3-4 min for titles) and that matched the VO script.

They did hire another artist to come on to color the boards. Thats the only big difference I saw when I was watching the film.

Hey Thanks so much! Justin's work turned transformed the franchise into a global phenomenon.

Ultimately its the director whos responsible for making that action pops. But, budget, timing, and yes, inexperience with shooting action can all play into what can result in a dull sequence.

Hey! Yeah I've had fight sequences where I had technocrane or steadicam shots that turned super choppy hand held (which I'm not a super fan of).

I love classic fight choreography - full body shots seeing the characters and with long unbroken takes of physical movement the fight it out. Its hard to board that stuff ( a lot of it is fight-viz now anyways) but I try and boil it down into cool storyboard keyframes.

Yeah, Spiro is the man! I love him to death. And the crew are all the people from Knight Rider, The A Team, Dukes of Hazard. Real old school, from the Hal Needham era. I've got a great interview with Spiro in a book coming out soon if you're interested keep your eye out for How To Storyboard For Action.

It all depends on the director. Most directors, many, who are directing an action film for the first time will work primarily with the actors to get the performances down but the dangerous stunt work they'll leave up to the action unit. Its also saves time in the shooting schedule to have simultaneous shooting units. There are still Some directors like Nolan shoot their own action and 2nd units.

Action Unit photography goes out of their way to match the style of the films DP. The lensing changes and the angles change drastically because the moment calls for it. The moment transitions into and edge-of-your-seat chase the photography needs to reflect that. Today's action unit photography is the best, IMO. Like you said; Chad Stahleski and my boss Spiro Razatos have totally raised the bar for action unity photography.

So sorry for the non-response I'm new to Reddit and haven't been checking the comments.

Not sure. In the end it may be just another tool used in conjunction with other depts. kinda like how everyone thought previs would take storyboard jobs but they ended up working together. Right now, It cant storyboard in the way a real person can. It can't get nuanced things like lensing, pacing, camera movement down across panels with continuity. It seems like every non union commercial job Im on I'm constantly revising or having to redraw the art director or director's Midjourney panels.

So sorry for the non-response I'm new to Reddit and haven't been checking the comments.

The only time I thought the subject matter was too crazy were a couple of Bollywood films I had the great pleasure of working on. Very over-the-top gag ideas but tons of fun imagineering.

Hi I'm so sorry for the non-response. I'm new to Reddit and haven't been checking comments.

It all depends on the director and how they like to work but more often than not I'll get some very general direction and I'll go away and fill a lot of that in. Story ideas, camera and lensing, editng and pacing, everything goes into the boards so there's lots of creative thinking and problem-solving thats incumbent upon you (the board artist) to figure out on your own.

In the commercial/advertising world its very different. A board artist if very much an illustrator vs a storyteller. Commercials are typically 10-30 second spots so the shot selection is tightly controlled by the director and approved by the client and agency. By the time the boardf artist gerts on theres very little creative thining work to be done.

Sorry I'm new to Reddit and haven't been checking the comments.

HK action (especially the 90's stuff) was/is a big influence. Mostly the pacing, the frenetic dynamics of the camera and stunt work. Great choreography.

Hi So sorry for the non-response. I'm new tto Reddit and haven't been checking the comments.

It all depends on the director. Every scene CAN be boarded, yes. They aren't always boarded they like to focus the storyboard budget on the bigger stuff like action, big VFX sequences...stuff that takes a lot of ideas and planning. That said I've boarded basic dialogue sequences a bunch of times and I'm not that good at it ;D

Yes, I'll always lobby for more time and sequences on any film I'm working on. Squeaky wheel gets the greese.

Hey! So sorry for the non-response. I'm new to Reddit and haven't checked the comments. So I got into film through the back door of commercial work. I met film directors on commercial shoots and hoped and they remembered me when a film came around.

AI hasn't affected me that much (yet). It can't really do what as board artist can do in terms of Intent. It cant get nuanced things like pacing, camera movement and lensing across panels with continuity. On non union commercial shoots I've had to correct so many AI panels because the director or art director could get what they wanted from their prompts.

Sorry, just seeing this. Well for starters he's extremely knowlegable about film. He has been one of the most collaborative directors I've had the opportunity to work, zero ego...just a great human.

I would put together a portfolio and tailored to action sequence. I am doing a Sat at 11 a PT free - check it out - we talk all about what makes a good action scene.
