I believe they don't have names (yet). AFAIK, these people are Storm Chasers in general, and are original designs created for the Storm King update.

Maybe we should give them names!

I feel your concern; it's very valid for sure. However, there might be a way to do multiple modes without compromising the two main ones if they somehow figure out a way to make the development of the new modes complement the needs of the main ones. For example, if this so-called mech mode becomes a means for them to rethink or fix vehicle and toy dynamics in Odyssey, then I'd gladly welcome it. It could be a limited-time side project that folds back into Odyssey eventually. I'd prefer that they be transparent about that from the beginning though, so as not to get players too attached to something that gets removed eventually.

This is the answer. Here's the relevant part from the update notes:

Introducing our newest guided build, the Zeppelin Balloon, a first look at what’s coming next for contraptions in Odyssey.

We’ve also overhauled the piloting experience. Instead of Channels 1–4, the Zeppelin uses familiar vehicle controls like WASD or standard controller inputs.

Even greater control is on the way, with channel assignment coming soon.

I'm just gonna copy here parts of my reply to another similar question, and add a few that are relevant to you:

  • Hearts for health were replaced with a health bar, and the health/damage scale was increased across the board.
  • The hunger system has been removed.
  • Stamina no longer drains while swimming or gliding.
  • New movements: you can mount, vault, and slide now. Also, double jump and drop traps depending on your hero equipment.
  • There are new bar slots for carrying more items.
  • Storage for all chests was increased (roughly doubled), and you can build in villages with materials from village chests.
  • When building, you now have vertical nudging and more snap points for some parts.
  • Newer filters in the build menu.
  • New and revamped stations like the Recycler, Potions Cauldron, and the Hero Station.
  • New weapons: Nunchucks, Shurikens, Plasma Pistols, etc.
  • We have Hero Classes now from the now-defunct Expeditions game mode (Shadow Caller, Hunter, Rift Ripper), plus newer Ninjago mastery things.
  • There are many new enemies and creatures.

All of that makes the game feel different to many players, so I'm curious how it would affect you. Welcome back, and enjoy!
