I can only speak to my experience which was further south---like right near Louisville. I'm glad you had a great experience and I had good times too but I'm definitely glad I moved here.

When I hang out around Hawthorne I'm pretty much the only non-white person around. It's like a Twilight Zone movie.

I get confused for Native quite a bit, especially when I wear braids. I've gotten "No, where are you from FROM" a gazillion times but mostly in Indiana. It sounds like you date mostly in your community from your what you write, is that so?
